So Out They're In: Clip-On Earrings

If you're like my mom and have a million clip-on earrings stored in jewelry box that I made at camp 20 years ago, then I must ask you two things: where did you get one of my handmade treasures, and two, how thrilled are you that clip-on earrings are back in style?!

The Spring shows did their best to move fashion away from the cute, vintage button earrings and reinstate the mode drama of huge, chandelier earrings and oversized clip-ons. Just as your lobes have begun to heal from your venture 7 years ago with ginormous earrings, they're back. And bigger than ever. So dig through the back of your drawer, pay a visit to Grandma, or check out the collection from Proenza Schouler -- these places will certainly uncover next season's boldest accessory.

Following my own advice, I checked out all three. Thankfully (and not for reasons solely related to fashion, although my jewelry collection and cheap tops from Mango might suggest otherwise) I spent a few months on and off in Rio de Janeiro over 2000-2001. So when I thrust my hand in the back of my sock drawer, I was able to pull out a velvet sack full of gigantic earrings which were as ubiquitous at the time in Rio as leggings are now. Glad I saved them! The tangled mess of silver, gold and earth stones (and ok, some feathers, but we'll leave those out of this) unraveled to become some very big, but very wearable earrings for spring. Obrigada, Brasil!

Next I headed to Mom's collection since she doesn't have her ears pierced. There I found the most amazing assortment of clip-ons this side of 1984. Bold geometric shapes, bulbous rocks, and primary and neon colors caught my eye, and my ears. It's hard to believe that my mom's clip-ons are so out they're in.

And as far as looking to the runways to uncover the trend, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Proenza Schouler borrows from my mom; Marni's flower power:

British designer Giles; Vivienne Westwood's door knockers:

And Rachel Comey's: When Clip-Ons Attack, Vol I:

But the runway hasn't been the only place we've seen the clip-on revival. Michelle Obama wore some vintage inspired ones on date night:

And yours truly can be seen around town in these Alexis Bittar clip-ons, enlarged here for your viewing pleasure:

So take your small, barely noticable earrings, put them in a velvet pouch, pull the strings of the pouch to close it, open your top drawer, push your leggings to the side a bit, put the pouch in and stuff it all the way to the back. You'll need those button earrings in about 5-10 years.

I find that a french clip earring works very well. It has a "clip" with a "screw-type-thingy" that can be adjusted for comfort. I can wear them all day with no problem. I saw way too many friends with newly pierced ears in pain and infections that I swore I'd never do it. The long dangle earrings look like they'd be a nuisance.

Way too much pain.

They are impossible to wear...totally impossible. After one to two minutes, I'm ripping them off.

been there, done that... just an FYI; earlobes stretch out with those babies.. ... that is why the teeny ones are popular.. hanging lobes are not pretty, trust me.. plastic surgeons have been making $$$$ fixing the damage...

I have worn large/long pierced earrings for over 2 decades (even when they weren't in vogue, I hate small earrings), some from parts of the world where belly dancing and very large earrings go hand-in-hand. However, I could never wear clip-ons for some reason, they hurt my ears far worse than the 4-5 inch long pierced earrings. I guess some people can wear them, some cannot.

Who are these people that CAN wear clip-ons?

Maybe they have damaged their lobes so much that they are totally numb.

Pierced earrings? I wear them occasionally, but find them uncomfortable as well. They aren't as bad. Of course, I have nickel allergy and find myself getting red, itchy and rashy with 90% of earrings out there.

I like rings and necklaces...oh, and my navel ring.

I make earrings. I make clips, posts, french hooks. Each is a one of a kind piece. I do this because the fashion world wants everybody to be stuffed into the "look" of the moment so they can manufacture mass sales that make the previous seasons "look" obsolete and force those without a true sense of themselves to go out and buy new acceptable fashion statements. It is all about industry. I feel that one has the option to create earrings for each individual woman's desires and not necessarily try to shove the "fashion of the moment" down the throat of the masses out there. Also some women even with holes love my clip earrings. They might be more comfortable for certain ears; offer an option to be larger and heavier, or a different statement. And they aren't cheap knockoffs. Depending on the materials they can run in cost into the thousands. Fashion has always been a personal experience and if someone falls out of the "flavor of the moment" that the fashion magazine might be calling for in a particular season, so be it. Who is to say who is right. www.martinbernstein.com

This is great, I like ear rings, but have a phobia about piercing my ears..

so do I . that's why I designed magnetic earrings. They hold better than a clip-ons and do not need holes that will grow larger and longer with age. Look it up on my web w.w.w.studiopetraazar.com, under "United Heart of OBAMA"
Soo pretty , soo cool and some people claim magnets in the earlobes can controle appetite.

Quite off thread: Clip on sun glasses deserve a vogue too.
Back to thread: There was a time when only certain ethnic groups had pierced ears. My mother & her girl friends went through the years of the 1930-1960 without piercing their ears. Ankle bracelets were out too. My mother never did adjust to the fact that my girl friends had pierced ears & wore ankle bracelets. She would have turned purple if she saw the piercings & tattoos(sp) of today, including the ones her grand children have.
