Five Great Cocktails For A Day At The Beach

Posted: 07/05/2012 5:02 pm

Beach season is upon us, and whether you're near Venice, Daytona, Cape Cod or Easthampton, we think it's a perfect opportunity to pack a little creativity in your cooler.

Sure, nobody's going to balk at a beery afternoon in the sun, but we like to take a little more of a spirited approach to life, and so we've compiled this list of five great sip-by-the-surf cocktails.

Our only request? Leave the red Solo cup to Toby Keith and go stainless. Disposable is so 20th century.

Nobody does the beach like cariocas, so we think that Rio de Janeiro's signature contribution to the cocktail world, the Caipirinha, deserves our top spot. That said, we like this version, which softens the original's citrus sharpness with a splash of coconut water.

Best summer/beach/backyard drink: sapphire/tonic with plenty of limes. If a summer drink has to be measured and has more than two ingredients then it should be served to me... on vacation, by a shirtless man.

Unbelievably stupid. When one goes to the beach, one ought to enjoy the natural setting. Maybe even the water. I was on a snorkeling boat in the Caribbean recently with free liquor and half the folks never even made it into the water they were so sloshed. They missed out on life, the snorkeling was amazing. Of course, if you have a couple of these drinks, you might get a DUI while driving home, or kill someone else and their whole family. Promoting drinking during the day is just plain stupid.

Try a shot of Chambord raspberry liquor with club soda and a slice of lime. Very refreshing!

I'd still recommend a nice warm pint of Guinness even if you have to drink it directly from the can.
Mind though, the heat can cause spillages on opening.
