Liquor.com's All-Time Favorite Bourbon Cocktails

Posted: 09/16/11 02:11 PM ET

For once, our government did something right: In 2007, the Senate passed a resolution declaring September to be National Bourbon Heritage Month.

It's only appropriate that we celebrate this all-American liquor, which dates back to before the founding of the country and by law can only be made within its borders.

So we strongly encourage you to mix up one of our favorite bourbon cocktails and raise a glass to the United States' native spirit.

Manhattan

Purists will tell you that a true Manhattan must contain rye, but we say let your creativity flow. Variations on the classic whiskey-vermouth-and-bitters formula abound, including the Perfect Pearl Manhattan that has a bit of smoky Scotch in the mix, the Dubonnet-containing Dubious Manhattan and even the rum-based Zacapa Perfect Manhattan.

There's an eastern European market that I frequent...lot's of great foodstuffs from unusual peppers, cheeses, condiments, olives, etc. They also tend to have a variety of very interesting bottled fruit syrups that are great for cocktails.

My current favorite is a drizzle of black current syrup into bourbon, on the rocks, with a splash of either ginger ale. A squeeze of lemon or an orange peel doesn't hurt either...

Sugar in an Old Fashioned? Can that be right? Sounds like putting sugar in a Martini to me.

How do you make an old fashioned?

Guiness used to be given to workers as part of their payment because Guiness, in particular, has lots of vitamins and minerals.

Right now, I am enjoying a Maker's Mark with water... The other cocktails are tasty, but simple is best to me.

Wow! That does look fantastic. How can you go wrong with pumpkin, bourbon, and pecans. I wonder if there is a way of turning that into a martini?

These are all really great classics, but I wish they had thrown in a new twist or two. Like, the new Bacon Infused Bourbon fad this is getting so big in mixology.

Or, if you are going to go the route of the classics, at least give the tried and true recipe for the best Manhattan ever made.

I love that it is "National Bourbon Month," but that is the only thing new I learned from this post. And when it comes to Bourbon, there is so much more to talk about.
