You may think of the famed French brandy as a sipping spirit, but cognac has a long mixological history. In fact, it was an extremely popular ingredient in the early 1800s, when the cocktail was born. Since its flavor combines deliciously with fruits and juices, cognac is the backbone of a wide range of both classic and modern drinks. Here are some of our favorites.

There are many theories about who created this elegant classic. What we do know for sure is that the mixture of cognac, Cointreau and fresh lemon juice is incredibly tasty.

Great! Cognac cocktails can be INCREDIBLY rewarding and perfect when the weather is cool!

Why would you ruin perfectly good cognac like that?!

Mixing the noble spirit with some plebeian substances --Sacrebleu !!

This is from the same culinary crowd who put ketchup on Kobe steak, soy sauce on prime sushi and mayo on pastrami.

I drank the "Godfather" (scotch and Amaretto) for quite a while before a friend introduced me to the smoother version made with cognac. It's not a drink for those "wake up in Jersey" benders, but goes well with a fine cigar and good conversation. If you think more than 3 or 4 are in your immediate future then just start off with bar whiskey and coke. You'll be money and a less severe hangover ahead.

On April 20 1976 I drank some "Louis the XlV Cognac" . mmmmm I still remember drinking it. My patron had one bottle and he served it to about ten friends. The bottle itself was a work of art.

Cognac, decent cognac costs about twice as much now as "back in the day"...drink Boubon it is domestic, cheaper and equally delicious from the best purveyors,

It's a different animal, though. Even if I agreed with you that drinkable bourbon is that much cheaper than drinkable cognac (I don't - but then I"m not a huge bourbon fan), it's like swapping hard cider for beer or tequila for scotch. Just not the same.

I don't drink Cognac but I won an unopened bottle of Martell's Supremo XO 2007 during a golf competition. I'd swap it out in a minute for an itunes card or credit to verizon to apply to the new iphone.

Any takers...let me know! ; )

I haven't had a Sidecar in years but will change that in the next 24 hours; however, I do agree with you about the kick and I think that may just be why I stopped drinking Sidecars all those years ago!

Having gone to school at Tulane, most of these are very familiar. The only thing I quibble with is the champagne flute pictured. That looks like a 99 cent glass from Walmart. The flute should always be leaded crystal; Waterford makes some nice ones.
