It wouldn't be Mardi Gras without a cocktail. And the drinks will certainly be flowing until 12 o'clock Tuesday night when the party officially ends.

Fortunately, even if you can't get to the Big Easy this weekend, you can celebrate like a local. We consulted Ti Adelaide Martin and Lally Brennan, authors of In the Land of Cocktails and owners of the legendary Commander's Palace and Café Adelaide, as well as their talented bar chef Lu Brow, about what festive recipes you should mix up.

As they say in the French Quarter, laissez les bon temps rouler!

Brandy Milk Punch
1 of 8
This creamy beverage is pure old-school NOLA and is served all over town. (It also works well with bourbon instead of the brandy.) Our recipe comes from acclaimed local chef John Besh.

Sure, ALL alcoholic beverages can be said to be New Orleanian - and I should know, as a local.

HOWEVER, only ONE of these drinks is truly New Orleanian - the first one. My father used rum instead of brandy and the suggestion to use bourbon seems offensive to my pallate.

Anyway, the rest of these drinks are common enough everywhere with the possible exception of the "singer" - never heard the name but crème de menthe and cognac, yeah, I've had that...

The real drinks of Mardi Gras are beer (the streets) and champagne (the balls). But I am always up for a good cocktail..

No, the beer is for tourists who mostly can't handle their alcohol. And New Orleanians know nothing about champagne - nor do they much care, most of us anyway.

But, who cares _what_ they drink? The point is; have a good time!

I AM a native New Orleanian. I have been presented in Mardi Gras balls. I guess we go to different types of Mardi Gras. I like the St. Charles variety. Too bad about the rain today.

I'm nowhere near New Orleans but I think my weekend will include a French 75 and a Sazerac. Cheers.

I don't know what #5 is, but it sure does not look like a stinger.

FYI..No one in the French Quarter says laissez les bon temps rouler. I've been a local Louisianian for 37 years, and no one in the city or outside it say that. Do all Italians in Little Italy say Fougitabout, and grab their crotch. If I ever heard someone say that who was a local. I would pun@h them right in the crotch for being a stereo type.

What about all those t-shirts for sale on Bourbon Street?
06:34 PM on 03/04/2011
That's odd. I've lived here almost 60 years and I've heard it all my life during Mardi Gras. There are signs with the slogan all over the Quarter. Punch somebody in the crotch for being a stereotype? Chill dawlin'. It's Carnival. Great article.

What kind of NOLA cocktail list is this without a Hurricane?
05:21 PM on 03/04/2011
No Sazerac? C'mon.

We love a Sazerac, but it just didn't make Ti and Lally's list of Mardi Gras faves. Here's a recipe: http://liquor.com/cocktails/sazerac/

The authors choices are uninspired......

Nothing with Bourbon - like Bourbon Street. Or, how about the Sazarac.

Yeah, it's pretty much a shame they managed to get a Margarita on here and not a Sazarac...

Do not and cannot understand the omission of the Sazerac.
12:17 PM on 03/05/2011
The Sazerac, definitely and how about a simple Bourbon Iced Tea sweetened with a little grenadine?
03:41 PM on 03/04/2011
Fail, fail! The Sazerac is THE Mardi Gras cocktail for grownups, and the Hurricane is for insane 20-somethings.
