Exes On Book Tour For "Heads You Lose" (PHOTOS)

Posted: 05/09/11 09:45 AM ET

Any author whose publisher sends him or her on a book tour these days is lucky, seriously lucky. And you pay for that luck with sleep deprivation, airport security lines, and often a reading with only one person in attendance who is usually homeless or mentally ill. I've done four tours for The Spellman Files series, and it's only the sleep deprivation that really gets to me. That said, I thought I knew what to expect with the rigors of the road.

But throw in a coauthor/ex-boyfriend who's new to the world of publishing, and a book tour becomes a different monster. I'll admit up front that I lived in fear for weeks before my intensive 15-city tour with David Hayward for Heads You Lose (G.P. Putnam's Sons), our collaborative comedic mystery. We've already covered what not to do when writing a book with an ex. Unfortunately, going on book tour together was unavoidable. Here's how it's gone so far. In keeping with the format of our novel, Dave and I will alternate days.

Lisa: I'm pretty sure I have something called executive function disorder (EFD), which means I have difficulty planning, organizing, scheduling, and completing tasks on deadline--or at all. My primary manifestation of this disorder is a fear of packing for trips and a chaotic result once completed. Book tours take you to a wide variety of climate zones and usually require you to be presentable at least once a day. For someone who wears pajamas 75 percent of the time, this pre-tour task has often caused extreme emotional distress. However, I'm happy to report that no tears were shed this time around. Since I'm traveling with a tour newbie, I feel like I must present myself as a professional. More importantly, I've discovered that it's best not to show any weakness in front of Dave.

I think it all depends on the exes. I'm very good friends with a couple of ex girl friends. But there are a couple others that I can't imagine being comfortably in the same room with let alone doing something like a book tour with them.
