Every Valentine's Day, Americans flock to florist shops and fight to reserve the last of the long-stemmed roses in rich hues of pink and red -- with rich price tags to match. Depending on where you live, when you place your order and which variety you select, Valentine's roses can cost anywhere from $75 to $150. They're usually dead in a week, and forgotten before the month is through.

Even more dis-heart-ening: 23 percent of women who buy flowers on V-Day are buying for themselves! But college students know better than anyone how to stretch a dollar. For no cost at all, you and yours could spend a day together volunteering at any number of local organizations. And if you really want to impress your co-ed cupid, skip the stems and put your cash towards one of these similarly priced, charitable gifts.
