Sarah Palin Wears Fake Glasses?

What's Your Reaction:

2008-09-08-sarahpalinatball.jpg

The London Telegraph's Celia Walden had herself done up like Sarah Palin. She writes:

As a former beauty queen, Sarah Palin has a point to make: she's a female Clark Kent wishing to distance herself from the spandex and big hair of her cover-girl days; she's a hockey mom encumbered by her looks - or is she?

That luxuriant hair, tied up so impatiently, is as carefully thought out as the spectacles; (I'm 90% sure they're clear glass).

Now, wait a minute here. Clear glass? Whoa. Call Palin ruthless, stupid, corrupt, inexperienced, eager-to-kill-animals-and-deplete-the-world's-cuteness .... but she wears fake glasses?

I take this accusation quite seriously. As a woman who wears real glasses, I can tell you it takes energy and determination to live life with glass/plastic essentially glued to one's face almost 18 hours a day. Faking it? That happens very rarely. To go to Anthropologie, buy a cute pair to match with your outfit, and wear them for a day? Fun! But to go through life with the same pair, day in and day out, clear glass? No way.

Glasses-wearers get skin breakouts. We get nose indentations that may last forever, Lord knows. We sacrifice the beauty of our eyes to the yoke of good vision, sighing as we read women's mag stories about how to make the eyes "pop." We have to buy expensive sunglasses, and are stuck with the one pair. We can't have fun by just picking up any pair at a drugstore. We can't wear headbands because the behind-the-ear pressure is too much. At formal events, we look dorky and not beautiful because who the hell wears glasses as formalwear?

You simply don't. Not unless you have to. Which is why this photo -- among all the others I've seen -- proves that Sarah Palin doesn't wear fake glasses. No one wears pink taffeta and four-eyes without dying a little inside.

The glasses are probably not fake, but if you look at them, they are not thick or bifocaled, etc.. and probably do not do a great deal of correction. She could likely navigate many circumstances without them and only require them for reading and detailed work, maybe driving (if she does that much now). She could likley afford surgery to correct any problem she has with glass with that mild a prescription.

The thing is - have you noticed how strikingly gorgeous she is? She needs the glasses so that she can be taken seriously. I'm sure she is under strict orders form every political consultant who she has every talked to to NEVER TAKE THE GLASSES OFF. She takes the glasses off and she's too much.

It may be a shame that beautiful women have a hard time being taken seriously, but then it's a shame that some men pick beautiful, younger women over more qualified women (or men), too.

I wear "fake" glasses sometimes. They are fun and are like jewelry to me. Fashion. A different look. She has a tanning bed in her house. She used to enter pageants. Obviously she is into appearances. Is Oprah fake because she straightens her hair? 99% of the film stars people worship have had at least one type of plastic surgery. Usually a nose job and then a boob job is likely. To me surgery is extreme and tanning beds are not even safe for your skin or eyes but glasses are not too big of a deal. I think it is kind of bizarre that she wears candy-apple red high heels to go campaigning because they look too sexy for business wear and are not the healthiest choice but really who cares. She is a pathological liar, knows nothing of foreign policy, fires people she disagrees with and allowed rape victims to be charged for rape kits. She is an extremely ambitious, vindictive liar. That's worth addressing. But eyewear?

Gov Palin may be one of the few users of fake glasses who doesn't do it look like an intellectual. But I guess there isn't a market for red neck frames. All you get is the pseudo-intellectual look. If you want red neck, get contacts.

While watching the Charlie Gibson interview, I noticed that her glasses had no visible prescription. When she turns her head and you see her cheek through the lenses, there is no distortion. If there were a prescription in her lenses, her cheek would look larger or smaller or off axis.

And yes, this is relevant. The woman is a phony, and this is just one more piece of her self-created imagery. Lipstick won't help her.

I say they're fake:

Hey, my glasses don't do that either, and trust me, I need them. (Still, I can't believe I'm defending Sarah Palin.)

Real or not, they don't help her see well.

Or else she wouldn't be a Republican.

Sadly, if this story was true, "fake glasses" would get more traction in the media and with voters than any other thing about her...it's just the kind of "character defining" shorthand that drowns every important issue in this country...like "he's the kinda guy I'd like to have a beer with..."

"No one wears pink taffeta and four-eyes without dying a little inside."

In my case, it would be the pink taffeta that would kill off a little of my soul. But I digress.

Palin has been and will continue to be fodder for misogynists. This fake glasses thing is just one more instance of focusing on her appearance instead of her fitness as a candidate; woman as ornament instead of a person to be taken seriously.

This is funny, when she spoke at their convention, there was a shot from behind. I'm afraid she's got some bad eyes, but I was hoping for that whole fake glasses thing too. It would have been so lame. But seriously, take heart, glasses (at least for girls() are back in style (if they ever were) I know plenty of girls here in NY who have really mild perscriptions but like the look. The one's with real "medicine" in their prescription are so much hotter.

I hear you. I'm a Democrat, and desperately want us to win this election. It's just ... fake glasses?

Everything about this woman is fake, including her record.

Sigh. I know this is supposed to be a humorous piece, but...
