Kim Kardashian: Why I Defend Her

Posted: 08/20/11 06:13 PM ET

Look, I don't think Kim Kardashian needs any help from me: she's far too rich and famous to actually let the haters bring her down. And yet, I feel compelled to come to her aid -- if not out of genuine sympathy, then at least because her role as walking punchline is absurd. There are people out there who spew hate and actively make the world a shittier place. There are people more deserving of our mockery. Which is not to say that Kim should be off limits comedically -- far from it. Make all the jokes you want, but do make sure they're original. Because Kim's mere existence isn't as inherently hilarious as so many seem to think.

In light of her wedding, the jokes have been more and more persistent. And sure, some of them are funny, but the vast majority come down to the following -- Kim Kardashian is a vapid, vacuous whore. Let's break this down.

1. Kim Kardashian is stupid. Is she, though? I'll give you that she doesn't have a whole lot of actual talent and has gotten famous for, well, nothing, but that in and of itself is a skill. It takes some sort of savvy to know how to market yourself and make a career out of fame. So while jokes about Kim's blatant attention-craving behavior make sense, jokes about how she's a total idiot don't, really. Not to mention the fact that, like Paris Hilton, her occasional airhead demeanor is likely a persona created to attract an audience. And it looks like it's working. I'd also argue that there's also a hint of misogyny to this humor (more on that in a bit). Kim Kardashian isn't just dumb -- she's a "dumb bitch."

2. Kim Kardashian is selfish. Spoiled, yes. Selfish is harder to prove. On Twitter, comedians retweet the admittedly shallow things Kim complains about, then counter her with a real world crisis or their personal problems. And yes, Kim's nails pale in comparison to the number of unemployed individuals in this country, or the violent persecution of gay people in Uganda. But just because she's tweeting about frivolous issues (which, I might add, we all do) doesn't mean she has no sense of more pressing problems. How else to explain the clothes she donates to the Dream Foundation, or her trip to Africa in support of Russell Simmons' Diamond Empowerment Fund? You can find a full list of her charitable contributions here.

3. Kim Kardashian is a slut. This one bothers me the most, because it reflects such an obvious gender disparity. We call Kim Kardashian a slut for the same reason we call Paris Hilton a slut: they both reached new levels of fame through widely publicized sex tapes. But while jokes about Kim and Paris being whores never seem to cease, we willfully forget all the men who have also had sex on camera. The list includes Rob Lowe, Colin Farrell, Eric Dane, and Tommy Lee. (Pam Anderson gained notoriety from her honeymoon tape. Tommy Lee earned a reputation for being well-endowed.) So, yeah, Kim Kardashian had a sex tape, and she profited from it. Good for her.

There are plenty of other easy jokes to be made. You could say Kim has a big ass, because making fun of the way someone's body fat is proportioned is always hilarious. You could mock her for being Robert Kardashian's daughter, even though that's not exactly something she could have avoided. (Full disclosure: I made a Robert Kardashian joke on Twitter this morning. I stand by it, and don't believe it targets Kim as an easy punchline.) You could make reference to Kim's apparent penchant for black men, as though that's some sort of character flaw. Relax, it's not racist if everyone else is saying it!

I'm not trying to shame anyone: some of my closest friends, all of whom I consider to be exceptionally funny, make these jokes. And I don't think less of them for it. I just believe that we should all hold ourselves to a higher standard. If you want to mock a celebrity, fine, as long as you're being creative. Bonus points if you have a legitimate reason to tear him or her down -- that is, something not related to gender, race, or sexuality.

You might, for example, ridicule Chris Brown's insistence that he loves women in light of his violent beating of Rihanna. (Old news? Sure, but it's still horrifying.) You could lampoon Katy Perry's role as an ally in the LGBT community when her first major single "I Kissed a Girl" was a queer politics nightmare. Or maybe you just hate their music and think they're annoying. Nothing wrong with that either. We're all entitled to our opinions.

What do I think about Kim Kardashian? I think she's a mostly obnoxious reflection of a celebrity-obsessed culture that values exposure above all else. I don't feel sorry for her. I don't think comedians should stop making jokes about her. But give me something new. I've told you why I defend Kim Kardashian -- now tell me why you hate her.

Yeah, you actually make a sound point. I hate her less because of her and more because of what she represents. We've become so obsessed with others' lives that we allowed yet another star to rise out of no discernible talent.

Why do we watch her? Her show is unoriginal, overdone, obviously scripted and likely rehearsed. There is quite literally not one redeeming quality, but the show draws an audience. WHY? Are our lives THAT unsatisfying that we must escape into this egomaniac's world?

I don't think her show exists if we are satisfied with our own reality.

You lost me at your first sentence, with he word "haters", the most over-used word on blogs, thrown out at anyone who, well, disagrees with you, or has anything -- omg! - critical to say. To criticize is not to hate. To have issues with the mere existence of Kim K is to have sense. C'mon, she is the poster child for shallow, material, degradation.

But you really blew it by ending this self-serving piece:

"she's a mostly obnoxious reflection of a celebrity-obsessed culture that values exposure above all else". What do you call someone gaining exposure through an over-exposed celebutante?

Why exactly is everyone blaming her for being a ā€œbusiness woman?ā€ She DOES NOT buy her own products, people do. If there wasn’t a market for her stuff, then she wouldn’t be collecting any cash.

This is exactly what I see so wrong with our country. I find it incredibly sad how materialism, selfishness, shallowness, and plain airheadedness is rewarded. Yet, we have military serving (including myself), police officers, firefighters, EMTs, etc. serving this country and the people. Who gets paid more? Who gets idolized? Who gets on TV? It's sickening how those who serve train day in and out to be the best they can. Constantly looking for ways to improve their efficiency and better serve this country and its citizens. Yet, you have girls like Kim crying about stupid, pointless, insignificant garbage. And what do these famous "stars" contribute to our country? Oh, that's right, just enough charity to get tax breaks. If she was charitable she would tell her fiance to donate that 2 million to charity instead of buying her that ring. Or how about the 10 million dollar wedding?

X 01 , A.....Let me be your first fan. Kim is emblematic of a country obsessed with wealth, which 95% of us can never attain, and all the trappings that money furnishes. Pehaps tuning in to the televised accounts of the vapid lives of the Kardashian clan serves a purpose, distracting us civilians from our tenuous grasp on what little salaries we still earn, and our service men and women from the constant threat of death and injury, should they be serving in combat theaters...

She is famous because she is ridiculous, literally.

My issue is that she is taken seriously as a role model for women which is sad. I do not think that the women's movement had Kim Kardashian's life in mind when they sought to empower women. And to the point about her charitable donations, why does she spend money to publicize X-rays of her derriere to prove it's real than to promoting the charities where she is funneling her wealth to those more deserving than her? And the fact that she is taken as seriously as others with real accomplishments was never more galling than when she walked the red carpet at the VH1 "Do Something" awards. Does anyone else find that amaziningly ironic?

Kim Kardashian is drop-dead gorgeous with a voluptuousness that evokes Sophia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida and Jayne Mansfield, and that has been a ticket to fame and fortune since time immemorial. Leaving aside women of antiquity and the trouble they stirred up just by being beautiful, wasn't Lana Turner "discovered" sitting at Schwab's soda fountain counter (I know, I know, it's apocryphal)? Weren't the Gabor sisters famous for being pretty? Never have seen the show, but am amazed at the vitriol aimed her way. So she hasn't solved world hunger or written the Great American Novel; at the risk of objectifying her, "a thing of beauty is a joy forever" as the poet says.

See the problem with your comment is, Sophia Loren and Gina Lollbrigida and Jayne Mansfield were good actresses. Plus, each did not have a hugh ego like Kim and that will be her down fall. You can pretty as a picture on the outside, but inside...............................................?

The Kardashians fame is all thanks to mama Kris Jenner. She is their manager, she does the bookings and manages their public life. At the same time she earns 10 % of their earnings. Good for her.
We can debate about the talents of each girl, but the fact is they have certain charm. The show is not full of foul language, nasty people and nasty, back stabbing females. That family is as close knit as I've ever seen any family to be. Good for them. I love them and leave the debates about the world to others to worry about. The world ills has nothing to do with this family.

Somehow the Kardashians are their own sitcom characters - out of it dad, controlling mom, sarcastic sister - and how Kim became the star is beyond me. I don't get the fascination with their entire family... maybe because there are so many of them to endorse anything and go to the opening of an envelope. Either way, I imagine they'll milk as many millions over their extended 15 minutes of fame as they can - and that seems pretty American of them. Sadly when the Kardashian craze is over, there will be another beautiful yet unaccomplished woman who is overly sexualized with her main concerns being fashion and her appearance that US audiences become obsessed with. I bet it'll be the Will Smith kids personally. http://www.thezerosbeforetheone.com/whos-who-or-who-cares

"She made money off a sex tape, good for her"
Dead wrong. That is not good for anyone. In a world where young girls already struggle against so much commercialization of sex, pushes toward anorexia, unequal pay, closed doors to leadership positions and on and on it is NOT good for yet another "role model" to become one due to "accidental" proliferation of a sex tape. This is yet another sad brick in the wall making it harder to encourage girls to strive to achieve and be recognized for themselves and their achievements, not their bodies.
The "hate" for Kim is not only the jealous, uniformed type you correctly decry but also a bemoaning of yet another example of society celebrating all the wrong characteristics in women and making it harder for young girls to learn real values.
PS. Her PR firm thanks you for the link to "her" charity work.

I don't actually hate her (and I think she's got a gorgeous behind, I'm kinda jealous). I have very little interest in her escapades and have never watched her TV show. I don't follow her Twitter feed. I get updates about Kim from TMZ, mostly, and I find her as mildly entertaining as I find just about everyone who's made a career out of being famous for being famous. :)

I don't hate her either. I follow her on Twitter but I don't use Twitter that much. I also watch Keeping Up with the Kardashians. It's hilarious. If you watched the show, you would shake your head at some of the things they overreact about. Last Sunday's episode was about them going to Bora Bora and Kim was complaining about how large the room was and her newly wed hubby Kris didn't understand why she was complaining about it being so big since most people would be happy about having a room they had( It was a nice room). Then she was swimming and Kris picked her up and threw her in the water. She lost her $75K earring and was mad at Kris and started to cry. Those are certain things I shake my head about when I watch that show. You should watch the show sometimes then you would know what I'm talking about.

The Kardashians are absolutely making the most of the fame they all received for doing their reality show....and WHO WOULDN'T??? If you could parlay the success of that show into several million dollar contracts/appearances/fragrances/clothing line/magazines/wedding coverage, etc. etc.; than I say you are a savvy and successful business person who took full advantage of the opportunity you were given. Kudos to Kim, her mom and her sisters for knowing that you have to strike while the iron is hot. The endeavors that are undertaken now will set themselves up for lifetime of wealth and success.

Hate? I've never even met the girl.

But she is the poster girl for shallow materialism, and there isn't much to admire in that.
