New Community Guidelines!

05/27/2011 10:30 am ET | Updated Aug 17, 2011

I'm happy to announce today our new community guidelines. They've been updated to more accurately reflect the main goal for the community, which is to promote a civil, positive and constructive commenting environment.

You may notice that the new guidelines have moved away from outlining a comprehensive list of dos and don'ts and focus on the reiteration of our underlying intent to provide an online space where intelligent and thoughtful discussion prevails.

We've been reading your emails, and we know that it is frustrating to have a comment removed and not know why, but we are happy to explain whenever there is confusion. If you find that one of your comments was removed and are unsure as to why, please review our guidelines. If you still feel that your comment should not have been removed, please help us to keep the lines of communication open by using the contact form.

Please also note that if you post a comment about moderation on an article, it generally is removed and reported in aggregate to our Community Support staff. If you'd like a response, emailing us via the contact form is the only way to guarantee we'll get it and reply.

As members of one of the largest, most engaged communities on the Internet, we appreciate your contributions to the respectful and informed debate that isn't easy to find elsewhere. We also encourage you to help us identify, through flagging, abusive comments that we may have missed, and as always, please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns via the contact form.
