This was Senator Biden's night.
Given the challenges our nation now faces, we need a vice president who can be persuasive with foreign leaders, tough with congress, and relentless in his drive to serve the American people. Tonight, Joe Biden showed why he is the right person for that job.
On question after question, he demonstrated knowledge, careful thought, and a willingness to make hard decisions. And with every answer, he vindicated Senator Obama's judgment and showed why he is considered one of our nation's wisest and most experienced leaders.
He was equally at home with global and local issues, demonstrated an amazing grasp of facts, and gave proof that he is prepared to be a partner who will contribute much as vice-president to solving our nation's problems.
Americans could not help but conclude that any president would be stronger and more confident with Joe Biden by his side.

When is Colin Powell going to come out and endorse Obama. For the sake of our country, he needs to speak up soon!
Yes it is me. Why should I log out? The truth hurts doesn't it. Evidently true soccermom must be worried after Sarah's performance tonight. Obama needs more than Powell's support to put him over the top.
I don't know what debate you were watching, Ms. Albright, but I don't think it was the same o ne I watched. As usual, Biden still thinks he's running against the Bush Administration. MCcain and Palen agree that mistakes were made in the Bush administration. So what? Is Bush or Chaney or anyone from the Bush administration running in this election? No, there isn't. Honestly, Ms. Albright, I wouldn't expect anything less from you than full support for Obama and Biden ... no matter what they say.
'radical conservative'...hummm....your reply is OBVIOUS and no shocker...
go figure
Yo Rad,
How is it possible to spell your own candidates name wrong, and yet perfectly get Obama/Biden correct? Maybe your subconscious is telling you who to vote for? Maybe your inner self is prompting you to evolve as a being? Don't you want to grow? Please?
You Decide
Who would you rather have as PRESIDENT?
Palin?
or
McCain?
That's what I thought too!
I'd rather have McCain.
Biden showed how much BETTER he'd be as President than McCain! And Obama the best.
Palin is the epitomy of TS Eliot's "The Hollowmen" Head piece filled with straw.
To all the Huffington post readers and writers:
First I'll say that I;m not an American, but I care!
All users in this site are already OBAMA voters. It is fun to read and share feelings with people like ourselves, who know that Obama is the right choice by far. But there is not much time left. Please make sure you spend it on "convincing" and "campaigning" for Obama.
There is no time to laugh with one each other around here. The situation is far from funny.
Leading by a few percent is nothing. We all know the amount of people who "think" they are not racist at all. When they will get to vote something might stop them from voting for a black man.
Stop wasting time on Palin. Otherwise we will have to see Tina Fey immitating here now for four years.
Go out there and make sure all those all those people who "feel" Obama is the right one for them is not just a feeling. Go out there, and spend your time on really convincing people, not in a cynical way, since all of us will not laugh at all when the third Bush administration will take place.
Please think what you are doing tomorrow morning to add another Obama supporter, even if you live in a Democrat state. Laughing at Palin here over and over is distracting us from the real job.
The polls are too close!!!! There is merely a month!!!!!!
You are ABSOLUTELY right. Thank you.
Thanks for the reminder! I agree!
Obama/Biden '08
Keep HOPE alive
Thank you, Madame Secretary, you are absolutely right. Senator Biden showed the depth and breadth of knowledge we need in our country's leaders. He showed that he is ready and able to deal effectively with the challenges we face. We don't always get to choose our challenges. We don't always get to change the subject.
Sen. Biden was brilliant! I hope this country is in a mood to vote in the smart guys this time instead of the smart mouths.
The two problems with Joe, which have always been the case on the national scene, i.e. Democratic Primary Debates and high profile Senate Debates and Hearings, is that he cannot resist giving that condescending smile when his opponents speaks and he lectures the audience by "repeating" the same statement one or two times to make a point. "We hear you Joe . . .!" Surprised his handlers could not convince him to go a different direction.
I didn't see that AT ALL!! I thought he was incredibly gracious in the face of a woman who refused to answer a single question directly and said things that were borderline insane.
No substance in your comments. I know you are disappointed she did not collapse in front of Joe, but she is tremendously resilient. While he has 30 plus years in the political establishment, the combo of Barrack Hussein Obama and Joe Biden is a huge contraindication. Remember what Biden said about Obamas preparation in the primary debates?
What about the smile Palin was giving to him? Although I would swap out "condescending" with "uneducated and worthless".
Wow, "uneducated and worthless" Sounds like you are content with having people serve in congress their whole lives. For me, I think it is VERY healthy that we still allow leaders that have cut their teeth in the private sector to give a stab at making Washington a more functional and efficient place. Are you defining such persons as uneducated because they have not spent their entire adult career in elected office? I believe Joe has pretty much been employed by the Government his whole adult life. I welcome participation from citizens to get involved. By the way, the smile and lecture style has ALWAYS been his Achilles heel. That is a political fact and one main reason his has very limited appeal. His handlers have tried to coach him but the habits are embedded apparently.
Brilliant--Joe was totally presidential--credible in every way. Palin spoke like a small town sportscaster reading a 6th grader's school election speech. She was contrived and manipulative --phoney winks and hammy catch phrases show her for what she is....a second place beauty queen-- turned second place newscaster --turned second place vice presidential candidate.
I couldn't agree more!
I'm so blessed that she didn't break out her flute and tap dancing shoes...........
Joe handled it perfectly. He could have slammed her plenty of times but he just gave us the facts. She was well scripted and didn't really talk about the issues and what John Mccain believes other than what you can get from Fox Noise. Saying maverick and Reformers 20 times is not what I want to hear from a candidate. I was glad Biden bought that up towards the end and he finished strong.
I felt sorry for Senator Biden, he did not deserve to be bullied by that woman, God!
I agree. What I saw tonight was Joe's beautiful heart and his passion for those of us on Main Street. This was Joe's finest hour.
I TOTALLY agree. I love Joe!
Home run...
There were plenty of people with plenty of reasons to want Joe to fail -- some think he talks too much, others that he is too full of himself. Yet, question after question, over and over, Joe Biden was gracious, knowledgeable, poised and yes - presedential.
On the other side, it is painfully clear that this nomination is perhaps the biggest fruad ever perpetrated on the American people. Answers to questions that weren't asked, or no answers at all. A VISIBLE AND APPARENT LACK OF ANY COHERENT OR WORKING KNOWLEDGE ON MOST EVERY ISSUE -- so painfully reinforced by constant and relentless referrals to her pre-scripted notecards. Notecards obviously NOT written by Mrs. Palin given her overwhelming need to refer to them.
America loves attitude and spunk. In another year, this might be playing better. But even the least political among us knows how dangerous it has been to hand over the reigns of the country to the unqualified, and unprepared. In that regard, George W. Bush may just have passed on a meaningful and positive legacy - the absolutely vital importance of credentials and capability in assuming the Presidency (and Vice Presidency).
In this regard, Mrs. Palin will by necessity fade quickly into a bad afterthought in the history of American politics.
great post!
What struck me was passion. Palin has no passion. She's chipper and charming and folksy, she can feign enthusiasm (she reminds me of a mother attempting to whip up enthusiasm in her kids to spend the day with grandma) but she HAS NO PASSION. Biden has passion up the wazoo.
That's it! I had tagged that grating sensation as Palin's brand of condescending populism. But I think "a mother attempting to whip up enthusiasm in her kids to spend the day with grandma" sums it up even better.
Unfortunately, I don't have much faith in the American people to critically assess her performance. What struck me about the initial post-debate analysis is how positive it was in favor of Biden, even though I thought the candidates were better matched in terms of performance than the presidential candidates were last week. And, even though it seemed to me that Obama schooled McCain last week, most commentators only grudgingly acknowledge Obama's win.
She just sounded fake and unconvincing. She feigned some knowledge well, but as you said, there was no passion there for what she was saying.
Guess it's hard to be passionate about topics which just got crammed into your head a day or two before and which you really don't much understand yet. By the time she understands the issues enough to be passionate about any of them, it'll be too late.
See R.W. Sanders's Profile
the debate has been over roughly thirty minutes. I have seen MSNBC and CNN. Both have spent far more time talking about how the candidates interacted with each other, than about what they said. Very sad.
And this surprises you because... And that will be the water cooler talk tomorrow...
Joe is so real, so likable; so thoughtful; he did a great job. He was the winner. I love him
Me TOO!
