Pat Robertson announced his support for Rudy Giuliani's presidential candidacy. There's nothing particularly noteworthy about this one endorsement ... other than the fact that Robertson seems to have spent his entire life arguing against Giuliani's position on abortion and gay marriage.
Robertson indicated that these disagreements pale in comparison to other issues, stating "to me the overriding issue before the American people is the defense of our population from the bloodlust of Islamic terrorists."
Giuliani's liberal-leaning positions have presented a widely-publicized conundrum for social conservatives, and its not surprising that some of them will make the pragmatic choice of selecting the most electable candidate. What's interesting to watch is who ends up on which side.
In contrast to Robertson's position is that of another prominent social conservative named Pat, Pat Buchanan. Buchanan recently wrote a piece that appeared on a conservative site in which he characterized the Rudy dilemma in Faustian terms.
After asking the question of what it means to be a conservative, he offers this on the Giuliani choice for Republicans:
"Pro-abortion, anti-gun, again and again he strutted up Fifth Avenue in the June Gay Pride parade and turned the Big Apple into a sanctuary city for illegal aliens. While Ward Connerly goes state to state to end reverse discrimination, Rudy is an affirmative-action man.
Gravitating now to Rudy's camp are those inveterate opportunists, the neocons, who see in Giuliani their last hope of redemption for their cakewalk war and their best hope for a "Long War" against "Islamofascism."
I will, Rudy promises, nominate Scalias. Only one more may be needed to overturn Roe. And I will keep Hillary out of the White House.
A Giuliani presidency would represent the return and final triumph of the Republicanism that conservatives went into politics to purge from power. A Giuliani presidency would represent repudiation by the party of the moral, social and cultural content that, with anti-communism, once separated it from liberal Democrats and defined it as an institution.
Rudy offers the right the ultimate Faustian bargain: retention of power at the price of one's soul."
I'd say, Round One to Pat B.

Rudy Giuliani and every other politician connected to the World Trade Center failed to keep those poor souls safe. They shouldn't be running for office or invoking September 11th, they should be ashamed.
Giuliani-Robertson. Marriage no. 4, made in hell.
Giuliani, McCain and Romney are all ignorant beyond belief and therefore automaticaly qualify as serious contenders for the white house along with money bags Clinton and the opportunists that surround her. The fact that someone as stupid as Pat Robertson could have millions of followers should give us some clue as to the mental health of the United States. So we can choose between the coming theocracy or the old style corruption. No wonder there are so many undecided voters.
