Where I Like To Read

Posted: 11/04/11 06:57 PM ET

Books Editor: This is the first of a new series on HuffPost Books, where we ask authors where they like to read -- and what they most recently read there.

My favorite place to read is airplanes. I find flying incredibly soothing and the fact that my phone doesn't ring (and no-one else's rings either) is a special bonus.

I just came back from a long cross-county flight and read the bulk of the new Steve Jobs biography. Do you know how when you want a movie on the plane all your emotional reactions are heightened--and you cry at the sillest most sentimental things? Well, I find the same thing when i'm reading a book on a plane, and that made the end of the biography--as Jobs is getting sicker and sicker--an incredibly moving experience.

I have been walking around every since with Jobs inside my brain. Usually i read thrillers on planes--which means I have spies on the brain for the next few days. Given the choice, I guess I'd have rather have Jobs.

Malcolm Gladwell: Collected ($80) is published by Little, Brown

Correction: we originally incorrectly stated the price of the compilation. The correct price, $80, is now stated above.

Uh, no actually. Maybe Malcolm needs to breathe more deeply while in flight. Or have his medication adjusted.

I love Malcolm . I could live without the hockey references though. I just cant imagine how people can live without reading these days.

In high school and college I read every book under the sun. In medical school I had to read day and night professional books and professional journals, interesting for sure, but written with abominable grammar. That must have turned me off, because after graduation I did not read at all for a long while, even though we have an extensive library. A few years ago I started reading again, one book a month at the most. Actually I wasn't reading it but rather studying, researching and double checking every detail.
Now I am writing books, articles and blogs. May be you ran across one.

I love to read on planes, too. Malcolm, you're so right - I cry at movies on planes all the time, even dumb romantic comedies, and that same feeling of being more attuned does making reading at altitude more intense. I think I'll have to read a Malcolm Gladwell book on one of my upcoming flights across the Atlantic (I live in Berlin).
