The Not-So Swift Boating of Obama on Israel

Posted: 06/06/11 04:20 PM ET

My own brother fell for it. Over the Memorial Day weekend, he asked me why President Obama threw Israel under the bus. I asked him what he meant. He said he could not understand why Obama insisted that Israel had to accept pre-'67 borders. I told him that the President said nothing different than Prime Minister Netanyahu and showed him the speech. Once he witnessed the truth, he realized he had been hoodwinked by one of the most effective "swift-boating" campaigns ever to hit the Jewish community.

I know we Jews are a justifiably paranoid people, but I am still astounded that we are so willing to adopt rumors/innuendos that certain people don't support Israel without trying to learn the facts. As for President Obama, I am not sure what else he can do to express his support for Israel and convey his real concerns that peace needs to be achieved soon.

I think President Obama (in word, deed and belief) is a great supporter for Israel and the right leader to help facilitate peace. Don't take my words for it, look at his:

Obama recognizes what Israel has faced: "For decades, the conflict between Israelis and Arabs has cast a shadow over the region. For Israelis, it has meant living with the fear that their children could be blown up on a bus or by rockets fired at their homes, as well as the pain of knowing that other children in the region are taught to hate them."

Obama recognizes that the Palestinians have not participated in Peace Talks: "For over two years, my administration has worked with the parties and the international community to end this conflict, building on decades of work by previous administrations. Yet expectations have gone unmet. ... Palestinians have walked away from talks."

Obama warns Palestinians that efforts to delegitimize Israel will not work and will not create an independent state -- they must recognize Israel's right to exist: "For the Palestinians, efforts to delegitimize Israel will end in failure. Symbolic actions to isolate Israel at the United Nations in September won't create an independent state. Palestinian leaders will not achieve peace or prosperity if Hamas insists on a path of terror and rejection. And Palestinians will never realize their independence by denying the right of Israel to exist."

Obama reaffirms commitment to Israel: "As for Israel, our friendship is rooted deeply in a shared history and shared values." "Our commitment to Israel's security is unshakeable. And we will stand against attempts to single it out for criticism in international forums."

Obama recognized that peace cannot be imposed by the United States: "No peace can be imposed upon them -- not by the United States; not by anybody else. ... What America and the international community can do is to state frankly what everyone knows -- a lasting peace will involve two states for two peoples: Israel as a Jewish state and the homeland for the Jewish people, and the state of Palestine as the homeland for the Palestinian people, each state enjoying self-determination, mutual recognition, and peace."

Obama recognizes that Israel must defend itself and that a new Palestinian state must be non-militarized: "As for security, every state has the right to self-defense, and Israel must be able to defend itself -- by itself -- against any threat. Provisions must also be robust enough to prevent a resurgence of terrorism, to stop the infiltration of weapons, and to provide effective border security. The full and phased withdrawal of Israeli military forces should be coordinated with the assumption of Palestinian security responsibility in a sovereign, non-militarized state. And the duration of this transition period must be agreed, and the effectiveness of security arrangements must be demonstrated."

Obama recognizes that Jerusalem and the Palestinian refugee issue must be negotiated: "I'm aware that these steps alone will not resolve the conflict, because two wrenching and emotional issues will remain: the future of Jerusalem, and the fate of Palestinian refugees. But moving forward now on the basis of territory and security provides a foundation to resolve those two issues in a way that is just and fair, and that respects the rights and aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians."

All of these statements are encouraging to the vast majority of American Jews. So, let's take a look at the "controversial" statement about pre-'67 borders. What the President said on May 19 was: "We believe the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps, so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states." (My brother was surprised to learn the President had said "mutually agreed swaps.") This is almost word for word the same position articulated in a Joint Statement from Prime Minister Netanyahu and Secretary Clinton on November 11, 2010: "The Prime Minister and the Secretary agreed on the importance of continuing direct negotiations to achieve our goals. The Secretary reiterated that 'the United States believes that through good faith negotiations, the parties can mutually agree on an outcome which ends the conflict and reconciles the Palestinian goal of an independent and viable state, based on the 1967 lines, with agreed swaps, and the Israeli goal of a Jewish state with secure and recognized borders that reflect subsequent developments and meet Israeli security requirements. Those requirements will be fully taken into account in any future peace agreement.'" Prime Minister Netanyahu repeated this position twice last week -- at AIPAC and in front of the Joint Session of Congress.

The fact is, bad information about the President's stance on Israel has been intentionally pushed by Republicans in a cynical attempt to gain favor with Jewish voters. This is a dangerous game, one that won't result in electoral success for Republicans. Instead, it creates only one loser: Israel. The state of Israel is best served when America speaks with one voice. By creating the illusion that there is a rift between Republicans and Democrats on Israel, Republicans are emboldening Israel's enemies and are sending a scary message to international audiences that support for Israel isn't rock solid. The consequences of those actions could have grave implications for the future of the Jewish state.

"Swift-boating" President Obama by intentionally misrepresenting the truth is unfair to him and harmful to America's foreign interests.

I find it utterly amazing the the Congress of the United States sided with a foreign leader and against their own elected President. Are the Israeli "americans" that powerful? What leverage do they hold that a nation of 7 million can seemingly dictate to a nation of 305 million that also happens to be the world's sole superpower. There will be peace in the region when our 'elected" politicians care more of fairness than campaign contributions from Israel.

Did you ever consider that the US Congress is siding with what they believe is right and what the American people believe is right?
Remember, Israel is a democracy, a friend, stands for human rights and is under constant siege by hostile enemies and neighbors. On the other hand its neighbors and opponents are autocratic, authoritarian, non compassionate to minorities, fail on most measures of human rights and you wouldn’t even be able to post your opinion in their country.

God forbid the Palestinians have the right to self defense. They're the ones who have to worry that their kids will be blown up or arrested. They've got thousands of CHILDREN in their gulags. More people have been killed in a single attack on a single family than all killed by all the rocket attacks since 2000.

They're the ones who encourage their kids to blow up or get arrested.

Thank you for stating the obvious. Sometimes people have the tendency to pick out certain phrases and cling to them as if it were the whole story. That's not only sad, but dangerous

I hope many will read your article:)

Because Obama makes this essentially PALESTINIAN NEGOTIATING POINT AND ISRAELI CONCESSION THE BASIS FOR STARTING TALKS. That is why he has thrown them under the bus. He is not a bad person, he does not hate Jews, he has just entirely undercut any room for negotiation b4 we got to the table. The position is not new, it is just not the only position, and not a place to start. And yet Obama ONLY has the courage to insist on this Israeli concession. What about refugees? It is true that everyone knows that they are not going back to Israel, why does Obama keep his mouth closed on that? What about Hamas? Closed. What about the chaos in the Arab world? NOTHING! It's roses in spring time for Obama because he only knows how to apologize to the Arabs. He thinks this is the way to get them to like him, but he only loses their respect. Suddenly the French have cache, and are leading the peace effort. It is not a surprise.

While some of Obama's recent speeches & comments have troubled me somewhat, I still see him & the Democratic Party as the better choices for Israel's security. The increasing hawkishness of the GOP, as well as an apparent rise in bigotry among their ranks, makes me less than confident that they can safely handle this ongoing dispute & bring it to a peaceful, mutually agreeable conclusion.

>>..a peaceful, mutually agreeable conclusion

...may happen regardless of which party is in power in US but rather as a result of Muslim reassessment of Jews as an enemy.

Your brother is more astute than you.
Obama threw Israel under the bus because:
1. He continues to push Israel to stop building settlements in the absence of a negotiation process. In other words he wants Israel to give up land as a precondition to peace talks. Remember it was the PA who walked out of the most recent peace talks.
2. He fails to recognize that Israel has no viable and credible partner in peace. The Palestinians are now represented in part by Hamas. No fair minding individual, let alone the president would expect Israel to negotiate with a terrorist organization who has already stated that any peace agreement would only be a temporary step toward the full goal of termination of the Jewish state.
3. He fails to recognize that this is the worst time for Israel to make any concession in view of the Arab revolt where yesterdays treaties with Arab leaders are potentially worthless today.
4. He lacks credibility because his speech invites the Arab world to join America in democracy and friendship while at the same time demonstrates how it treats the only democracy and friend in the region%u2026by throwing it under the bus.

11/25/09, State Department Statement: "We believe that through good-faith negotiations the parties can mutually agree on an outcome which ends the conflict and reconciles the Palestinian goal of an independent and viable state based on the 1967 lines, with agreed swaps, and the Israeli goal of a Jewish state with secure and recognized borders that reflect subsequent developments and meet Israeli security requirements."

Obama's recent speech: "The United States believes... the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps, so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states."

In other words, what was formerly the Palestinian position is now the United States position. Parts important to Israel, like being a "Jewish state" were dropped. Sounds pretty anti-Israel to me.

Netanyahu's extreme right-wing speech wasn't about re-starting the peace-process. It was about swaying America's 2012 presidential elections. Think about it. Who invited him? What cause did the speech benefit? It wasn't peace or negotiations.

Right. It was all powerful Jewish lobby with ominous goal to stop world progressives from establishing world peace.

Thank you, sir. Swiftboating; that is precisely what it was. And predictably, it was not only those from the Jewish community who fell for it.

I can appreciate your position as a Chair of the Council, but the fact remains it's unequivocally obvious that starting with '67 borders as the basis for mutually agreed upon land swaps SEVERELY undermines Israel's negotiating position. Why not start with where borders are actually today, where they have been for the past 44 years? You think Abbas/Hamas would ever agree to concede demands to take the eastern portion of Jerusalem for the capital of the Palestinians based on Obama's starting point? Never.

I understand this is one of the world's most dividing issues. My opinion is the land is Israel's. Israel was invaded and captured the territories defending itself to fortify its borders. These are the repercussions when you invade a country and lose. It's that simple. Israel's right to an undivided Jerusalem is even stronger.

I'm a Democrat. Admittedly, I'm a moderate, but I side with the Dems on the vast majority of issues. I voted for Obama, but there's no way I'll vote for him in '12 unless he does a 180 on his betrayal of Israel. I hate to see the issue become partisan in the election, but that's nobody's fault but Obama's. Both sides in Congress continue to stand firmly behind Israel as do a very strong majority of the US population. There's no country in that part of the world that comes close to representing the good things the US stands for than does Israel.

Where did Mitt Romney get the phrase: Obama "threw Israel under a bus"? What idiot adviser passed this to him? Or did he come up with it on his own?

The Palestinians as proved by Wikileaks documents have continuously attempted to negotiate and have offered so many concessions that a Palestinian state is unattainable now. Obama is mouthing the same tired rhetoric of his predecessors, seeing Israelis as extraordinary in their security needs beyond the needs of our own citizens and the Palestinians. Why would our country support segregation and inequality if it weren't for campaign dollars from AIPAC?

It is extraordinary how few people appreciate the wide-ranging dangers inherent in the failed Likud policies of Netanyahu. Israel has contingency plans to wipe out its opponents, probably with biological or chemicals weapons - as nuclear warheads would endanger its own cities with radiation.

It will not hesitate to use these destructive weapons if it consider it is at risk, notwithstanding that the conflict is now almost entirely of its own intransigence. Every month that Netanyahu refuses to negotiate, the nearer is the inevitable war that will reduce the entire region to rubble. Obama is well aware of this and is constructing his strategy accordingly. Last man standing will certainly not be Baby Bibi.
