I was born in New York City, and raised in Chicago, Montana, and Southern California. I received a BA in Economics from UCLA before UCLA required a 4.0 GPA to get in. I currently live in Los Angeles. I am married and have two teenage sons. I have had a few incarnations. My career started in merchandising at a large department store in LA. Then I became a programmer and systems designer for that department store. My husband and I moved to London for two years in the eighties, where I was a systems analyst for a large merchant bank.

I left the “work and get paid world” when my first son was born, never to return. Since then, I have been a full-time “Jackie-of-all-trades”. Besides the usual mom stuff, like driving, cooking, nagging, and finding “lost” things that are hidden in plain view, I took art classes, writing classes, and I even got my black belt in Shotokan Karate, (of course that took almost 7 years). I started blogging because I have a lot to say and nobody at home who wants to listen. I write about strange news stories, people I admire, people I’d rather not share oxygen with, and things that annoy me. I am still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up.

Afflatus is defined by Webster's Dictionary as "a divine imparting of knowledge or power: inspiration." I had never seen this word until I read my son's college essay. I was slightly embarrassed that I needed to look up a word used in a teenager's writing. Of course, I did not...

My first foray into the political arena started after I met Senator Obama at a friend's house in April of 2007. Prior to that, my only political involvement was the occasional discussion about an election or a ballot measure. Until then, I was a life-long Republican. But after meeting Barack...

Many Americans face one particular dilemma every time they go to the grocery store. Should they request paper bags or plastic bags? I'd like to compare this to the dilemma many Americans may have when they go to the polls in November. Let me see if I can help these...

Posted August 18, 2008 | 08:14 PM (EST)

A number of years ago, I was having dinner with some friends at a now defunct steak place in L.A. I remember a conversation we were having that night (over very dry martinis) that has stayed with me ever since. We were discussing the effects of technology on the ability...
