Top 10 Ways to Avoid GMOs

What's Your Reaction:

This month, October, is Non-GMO Month. I find most people are really confused about what a GMO is and where GMOs are found. Some people tend to think that GMO seeds are similar to the type of hybridization that has been going on amongst gardeners for centuries. Not true! The type of genetic modification that happens to create GMO seeds involves the forceful insertion of things like E.coli genes or genes that produce glyphosphate (an herbicide) or cause Roundup resistance (allowing farmers to dump more Roundup onto the plants) into corn and soybeans and cotton.

GMOs exist for one reason only: for the chemical companies who make them to enable themselves to sell more chemicals to farmers. Do not, I repeat, do not fall for any marketing sales efforts that claim GMOs will help feed the world and save farmers from drought. It's a lie!!!!

And remember, as I write in Organic Manifesto, the only safety testing on humans or animals for GMOs is happening right now, on you, on your kids, and on farm animals around the world. Early results are showing everything from digestive failure to kidney and liver failure and accelerated aging. Terrible stuff.

Here are 10 ways to avoid GMOs:

1. Buy USDA-certified organic food. It is currently the only official way you can avoid GMOs, since GMOs are not allowed to be used according to USDA organic regulations. THANK YOU, GOVERNMENT! (For once!)

2. Avoid all nonorganic soy products like the plague. That means things like nonorganic veggie burgers, tofu, tempeh, edamame, and miso products.

3. Don't buy anything that claims to be "non-dairy" that isn't organic. Soy is used to create everything from Cool Whip to Coffee-Mate...in addition to the obvious non-dairy soy treats in your health-food store freezer. Yup, they are filled with GMOs, too.

4. Don't buy or eat anything with corn in it that isn't organic. That means corn chips, cereals with corn (or soy, for that matter), or even corn bread!

5. At all costs, eliminate high-fructose corn syrup (a.k.a. "corn sugar") from your diet. It is just an excuse for chemical companies to convince farmers they can keep growing GMO corn and poisoning you and your family.

6. Avoid biofuels and ethanol; they're a toxic GMO festival. No one seems to care if corn is poisoned if it's just going to drive our cars. Problem is, we are all being poisoned by it.

7. Don't buy any meat, fish, poultry, or eggs unless they're certified organic or from a farmer you completely trust. TIP: Ask farmers what they feed their animals when they aren't eating grass. If a farmer feeds her animals nonorganic food, it is most certainly filled with GMOs. Those GMOs are definitely harming the animals, and they are probably harming you...we won't know for sure until we all find out together, since we are all guinea pigs in this giant experiment.

8. Buy certified-organic cotton clothing, bedding, and towels. Again, it's the only way to be certain that you are not supporting GMOs. Even though you don't eat cotton (although cottonseed oil is a part of many processed foods, so technically, you may be eating it), you are still supporting a toxic, dangerous farming system.

9. Read! This GMO arena is constantly changing as the industry tries to sneak around consumers and farmers. Be vigilant, keep an eye out, and read whatever you can to try to stay informed.

10. TAKE ACTION! Ultimately, the only thing that can stop the GMO invasion is you. All of you. Write letters. Send petitions. Speak up. Demand change and demand organic!!!!

Thanks so much for the article, Maria. GMOs are dangerous, thanks for telling people. But, people should also know that Monsanto is busy buying up legitimate seed companies. GMOs might be the only seeds we have left if they are successful. You know this could mean the loss of everything. Source - documentary - The World According to Monsanto.

you're very right on the mark about that. Here's a link to telling (and rather chilling) expose on the Doomsday Seed Vault. http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=7529

Regarding the terminology GMO vs. GE (genetic engineering), as a newsletter editor, I make it a point to use GE only. This is for two important reasons. First: many foods are genetically modified that are organic. Foods can be genetically modified both in nature and by human manipulation i.e., broccoli, cauliflower, certain stone fruits, apples etc. What we are talking about distinctly is genetically engineered foods, foods that are engineered beyond their own species, rather than modified within the species. I know the EU and England use GMO often (though not exclusively), as well as Jeffery Smith, but that terminology is not correct for the issue at hand.
The second reason I use GE only is that I’ve listened to biotech scientists work a spin on consumers by telling them (us) that we’ve been eating genetically modified food for centuries, without incidence. In one instance, I heard this spin from a biotech scientist from UC Davis, when she spoke of the safety of GMOs, by tying this food (sic) product together with the modified Bartlett pear. The problem is the spin on the wording.
With the average reader trying to understand the basics of GE crops and the dangers associated with them I also think that interchanging the GE and GMO confuses them

I have been shouting from my soap box/blog about the dangerous of genetically modified seeds to anyone that will listen. Thank you so much for this article. I even posted a link to both FB and twitter, you are my hero!

Maria, Thank you so much for writing this article! WholeSoy has put together a guide for ways to participate in Non-GMO Month as well. Here’s the link for reference: http://wholesoyco.com/blog/item/take-action-guide-for-non-gmo-month

Rosy thank you for bringing home the point. You are correct it is very difficult to avoid GMO's and doesn't that make you angry?! A couple of biotech companies now control almost all the food you consume. You soon will no longer will have a choice to eat what you wish (GMO free), these companies have taken care of that for you.
The latest buzz in this GMO arena is genetically modified salmon. The spokesman for this company states that these salmon would never escape, not be possible, uh uh never happen… Currently farm raised salmon run amuck with the wild and we cannot even control the carp in our rivers.
GMO is the greatest threat this world has ever seen to date and these biotech companies casually dismiss the protests (the marketing ploy to undermine those of us who really understand things like epigenetics). Besides the real health concerns with GM food there is the alarming news of cross contamination. It is difficult to grasp that these companies have contaminated the corn in the country revered for it, Mexico, and somehow this is OK.
As Maria states write, petition and write again. If there is ever one letter you need to write this is it. Demand GMO labeling before it is too late.

Great article. Just want to share with everyone our easy method for making tempeh.

Thanks for tips Maria - I just hope that if the FDA approves "FrankenSalmon" - that naturally raised salmon can be mentioned on the label.

why must we put the labeling responsibility on the non-GE fish (or any other non-genetically engineered food, textile or drug)? let's vote for legislation that mandates the labeling of genetically engineered products instead.

With all due respect, quite frankly, following everything on this list 100% of the time would be pretty difficult, if not impossible. I buy organic milk and eggs, but organic meat is next to impossible to come by in my area. We don't eat a ton of meat, but we do eat some, primarily chicken and fish. Isn't ethanol blended into most gasoline? How can we possibly avoid that? Even if you don't drive, you're still breathing in air that contains exhaust from other people's cars, buses, etc.
