Working Hard to Get Back on Track

Posted: 05/11/2012 5:52 pm

Since childhood, 21-year-old Ashante Dickens has had a clear goal: "I want to be an elementary school teacher. That's my passion." She got good grades in school, and did well enough in high school to be allowed to take a few early enrollment classes at a nearby college in early childhood education. She was on the road to realizing her dream when a family problem changed her course. Now Ashante is a parent to one-year-old Tristan and lives in a Detroit homeless shelter where Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Julia Cass met Ashante and Tristan while on assignment for the Children's Defense Fund. Ashante is still desperately hoping to return to college and her teaching dream, but for now, the shelter offers women and children a home for up to two years while they "get situated," as she says.

Ashante calls herself a "back and forth child." Her mother disappeared from her life when she was six. She grew up in Georgia with her father and spent summers in Detroit with her grandmother. Ashante's father was an assistant principal and they lived in Cobb County in suburban Atlanta. "I had a good life in Atlanta," Ashante said. But when she was 16 her father had two strokes that affected him mentally as well as physically.

"He became abusive," Ashante said. "He wasn't really right in the head." By then she had reconnected with her mother and told her "about the situation I was going through where he would hit me." Her mother called the police who removed Ashante from the home. She was 17 then and the authorities allowed her to go live with her grandmother in Detroit.

Tristan Dickens

One-year-old Tristan lives in a Detroit homeless shelter with his mother Ashante Dickens. Programs like Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, food stamps, and transitional housing are lifelines for them and millions of others.

Ashante graduated from high school there and began attending Wayne State University. "I didn't do well," she said. "A lot was going on in my grandma's house... My auntie and my brother stayed there too. It was hard to study and deal with the different personalities." She quit school and started to work at McDonald's thinking that she would save enough to be able to move into her own place and then pick up her education again. She stopped work when she became pregnant with Tristan and left her grandmother's house for a homeless shelter. After Tristan was born, they moved to a transitional living shelter for mothers and children.

Ashante began receiving cash assistance and food stamps. As soon as Tristan was a few months old she went back to work. "I don't think anybody wants to be on assistance. My motivation is to work harder so I don't need it."

For seven months, Ashante took a three-hour bus trip each way to work a $7.85 an hour job at a Target in the suburbs. This was her schedule: Take Tristan to day care by 8 a.m., take the three buses to work; work eight hours; take the three buses back to Detroit, pick Tristan up at 11 p.m. One of the buses ran just hourly and if she missed that bus, she would be an hour late. This happened enough times that her hours were cut back to just 10 a week.

Eventually she left that job and started seeking another. "I've done retail. I've done office work. I've worked in day care so my experience is broad," she said. Her goal is to return to college but she thinks she should work to get a place to live and a car first. In October, she got a job at a McDonald's which is an hour to an hour and a half walk and bus ride each way. The pay was $7.40 an hour. Temporary Assistance to Needy Families gave her a voucher for day care; otherwise she would have ended up making very little.

"If my dad hadn't had a stroke, I would be somewhere totally different right now," she said. "I'd still be in Georgia. I would probably be in my second or third year at Kennesaw State in elementary education. But I'm just going to work to the best of my ability to get back on track. I think I'm young enough to turn it around."

Programs like Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, food stamps, and transitional housing are lifelines that work when people fall on hard times. We need to preserve them for people like Ashante who are already working hard to get back on track but still need extra support to keep turning their difficult circumstances around. But that's not what the Ryan "reconciliation budget" just passed by the House of Representatives would do. Instead it would eviscerate the food stamp program, literally taking food out of the mouths of babies like Tristan, and also make deep cuts in health and social service programs. We all need to raise our voices and vote this year to make sure children like Tristan have the opportunity to survive and thrive and return hope to find America's vanishing dream.

Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, food stamps, and transitional housing are lifelines that work when people fall on hard times. We need to preserve them for people like Ashante .....

------------
Society, since early civilization and even before, has perfected programs for assistance. They are called FAMILY. All of us have:

FIRST DEGREE RELATIVES: parents (two), siblings, grandparents (two sets), spouse, children
SECOND DEGREE RELATIVES: Cousins, aunts and uncles, in-laws.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT SYSTEMS

These are three protective circles for individal assistance. In fact the above three circles exsists even in animal society like lion, elephant, bird colonies, and all homo sapiens / primates. In other words, such a social arrangement is in our genes.

Genetically determined characters and behavior pattern and solutions CANNOT BE repeat CANNOT BE supplanted by govt programs, which are merely band aids and are bound to fail; especially when the band aid is used to supplant the real solution to the problem.

omg: I had tears in my eyes. Mother + child in any blue state in this country qualifies for far more assistance than she could ever make working for min wage. Food stamps + housing + transportation allotment + cell phone allotment + medical + dental + vision + school lunches + head start + day care, + education allotment, and I read bs about some woman that supposedly took three buses to work 10 hours a week. Not happening people. Welfare is a way of life. It is 3rd-4th generational now. A Welfare queen mother lives pretty well. Go to social services: check out the cars and the cloths. Go to ANY inner city community and watch the children push their children down the road in a baby carriage (provided by social services). Get up off your butt and go look. Look up the food stamp allotment for mothers. Check out the health coverage. Find out just what housing you pay for. Don't believe me, look it up for yourself. Stop eating the crap you are being fed.

Best of luck to Ashante. She sounds like a hard-working young woman whose aspirations are still alive. Yes, she obviously had a misstep. Not a surprise that she was emotionally vulnerable from her repeated displacements. Someone obviously took advantage of her.

What exactly does the GOP want? They won't support any significant job creation measures. They are against any minimum wage increase or strengthening of workers' rights, measures which would reduce poverty without increasing social spending. And they are against any measure like universal pre-k or healthcare that would provide equal opportunity.

And so long as the poor suffer and starve quietly, they couldn't care less.

As a Republican I think some welfare is beneficial when circumstances arise unforseen and a safety net for these people is acceptable. BUT, some people live on welfare all their lives and it passes down through the same generations, is that right, to me NO. So what is the answer, are not churches taking care of the poor and needy since they pay no income tax, are all the charities who take in millions of dollars not distributing money to the needy. Maybe and investigation is needed into this because some taxpayers are tired of all this, I am and I am not ashamed to say it.

I doubt seriously that the churches and assorted charities are sustaining peoples needs.Sure, one might find some food or clothing available, and occasionally they might step up to the plate and provide some medical need for a child,or some housing/shelter.
There is one place in particular I see a lot of tax-free church money going: Lobbying.Lobbying and influence peddling.Imagine that, certain churches using their tax-free status to act as political action groups in influencing and bribing our political system to push some specific social issue.,
Now,I'm sure almost all churches push some form of influence or opinion on others, but the Evangelical far right Christian churches have been hell-bent on spending on these culture wars.
Wouldn't all that money and effort be better spent actually helping the needy? Of course it would.
Anyways.I believe all tax-free entities that are actually political lobbying groups should be properly tax and labeled. And I am not ashamed to say that.

Years ago, before we had social programs, churches and communities took care of the needy and poor. I assume that is what drb 107 was referencing. I think that this young woman should be helped. Obviously she is doing whatever she can to make a better life for herself and her son. I think the original concept of welfare was of good intent, however, it has become a system full of issues. I am all for helping someone when they need it and if someone is unable to work due to a mental/physical impairment, then by all means we need to provide for them. The problem is that many people on welfare simply do nothing to better themselves. There is alot of abuse out there and part of the problem is that there does not exist adequate monitoring to ensure that those who are abusing the system are caught. It is after all our tax dollars that are funding this and as a tax payer, I want to ensure that my money is not being wasted on someone who is just to lazy to work.
As for lobbying, I belong to a good size church and we don't spend any of our funds on lobbying efforts. Much of our money goes to assist the needy in our community and orphans. Not all churches and Christians are "hell bent" on spending on what you term as "these culture wars."

As I see the current trend: Divide us regarding who has what, who does what and use half truths and outright distortions of facts to support your arguments. Poor people and jobless did not earn what they get and should get even less if "we" are "forced" to pay for their benefits. It's become some kind of requirement for anyone who wants to be identified as "conservative" or a member of the "right" side of politics to blame the poor for being poor and proclaiming the amazing virtues the rich display with their generous support of our magnificent country. I'm getting ill just writing this so, forgive me if I mail the effects of my illness to the RNC. I seldom donate to anything politically involved but, I fantasize often...when I become ill.
10:02 AM on 05/12/2012
1. Food, housing and mass transit should be viewed as public rights along with health care. It's self-defeating to continue to humbly beg for "programs" to help the "poor." We all are poor -- or almost are, or soon will be -- and it's time to overhaul our society to deal realistically with public needs. Ironically, most working-class people are "conservative" -- i.e., they have been conned into thinking that allowing a small minority to make tons of money, while hoping that some of it trickles down to them, is the American Way. Actually it's just the way to ongoing poverty and endless underemployment.

2. On another subject, why not use food stamps to address the huge problem of obesity in this country? Simply limit food stamp accounts to paying for fresh vegetables, canned vegetables, nuts, raw and canned meat, non-sugary cereals, paper products, toiletries and a few other essentials. Most processed foods (pizzas, etc.), sugary cereals, candy, ice cream, desserts, deli items, etc. would not be allowed. The end result would be much healthier population and a more efficient food stamp program.

Very good post. I have one issue with part 2, however. I completely agree with you that obesity and eating-related health disorders are a huge problem in America. Many of the disorders are preventable if people just made the decision to eat better. However, (you knew this was coming), we have to be able to allow people to make those choices, no matter what. We can't make everyone to the right thing sadly. And, whenever we try, we always end up forcing people who do make good choices to suffer as a result. All the people who do eat well; who know how to combine good healthy foods, while still allowing themselves an enjoyable snack once-in-a-while would be punished along with those who don't care at all. Rather than remove the choices for all people, we need to find a different way to encourage healthy eating, but, in the meantime, we just have to accept that some people are never going to do what's best for them.

Which desk is that? Is it the one just outside his car elevator? I can almost envision it now,Mitt will invite some wealthy friends, and don a shiny badge that says "hallway monitor",or "elevator police".
Imagine the smug grin of confidence on his face as he greets guests and shows them his latest toy.Plus, consider the boost of confidence this will give him with regard to his speaking skills...
"Going down I presume"...that's like, what? Four words? Kind of hard to stammer and stutter your way through that.
Of course,he could even surprise us,by saying.." Going up?..but then,we might accuse him of being a flip-flopper........

What a sob story! "A family problem?" There were some poor decisions involved here. I'm not convinced that paying this woman for her missteps will do anything to alleviate the social problem. Billions have been shoveled out since AFDC and TANF have been enacted but these unfortunate situations continue. If you get pregnant and the father refuses to pay support (by the way, where is
the baby daddy here?) and you have insufficient education, and little in the way of resources, you are in for a bad time. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

Unless you can guarantee birth control and find a way to tie daddy to a chair and drive him to work and home each day and ensure he pays his bills, you can't blame a woman for a man's choices. You can't have it both ways. Either you allow easy access to birth control and support job initiatives, or you must support social programs.

These should be help for people in need, not a lifelong trust fund. I inherited nothing, got nothing for free, and have to pay 30% of my wages out to those who did not have all the advantages. Sounds like they have an advantage now!

You are in your privileged position mainly because of luck. If you had been severely injured or otherwise had some bad luck you might well be on the streets. It's time for Americans to stop fighting each other over the crumbs tossed down to the working class, and start demanding the kind of social equality that prevails in Northern Europe, which has achieved the highest standard of living in the world while paying taxes only marginally higher than Americans do. (total taxes, not just income tax rates)
12:01 PM on 05/12/2012
I personally don't consider attending public school, community college, and then working my whole life to support my family luck at all. It's called real life! Contrary to pop culture opinion, this is a great country with plenty of social safety nets already installed to help the folks in need who can't help themselves. We need to shore up these programs, not by going after the super rich Kennedys, Buffets, Winfreys, Soros', and the Hollywood elites' money to pay for it, but by letting them invest in business that will create jobs and grow the economy. Everyone can't be rich but the possibility of that achievement creates personal drive. I would much rather work each day in hopes of "making it" than have the government take it from the wealthy and toss me scraps and keep me dependent on them.

I pay taxes also. Some of my taxes go to things that I might not necessarily agree with. For example,A defense budget that is twice as large as even during the cold war...a defense budget that is appropriated and decided upon by the very same people who happen to hold shares and stock in.I also pay taxes that wind up in the pockets of the oil industry, which just so happens to be enjoying their highest profit margins in history.I also paid taxes that went into the pockets of the bankers, who, because of their recklessness, greed and ability to bribe our government into deregulating them, nearly collapsed the worlds economy.....
Having a society,a social compact, comes with a price tag.You might have already know this, and just made the conscious decision to make stupid statements....

These U.S. Grants pay the $200,000 a year Salarys, insurance and retirement plans for the executives of the Charities and Non Profits. There are over 290,000 of these in the USA getting Grants.
Get rid of them and there would never be a need to cut the safety nets for the poor.
Or let them place bids for thing like after school programs instead of handing the millions to set and run those programs.
Let them be private enterprize.
All these Non Profits and Charities are doing is increasing the cost of welfare.
