Mariangela Anzalone is currently a candidate for a Masters in Public Policy at Georgetown University. She received her bachelors degree in political science from the University of Chicago in 2005, where she learned a great many things and voted early and often. She has worked with both Chicago and New York City governments and volunteered for the Kerry 2004 and Obama 2008 campaigns, but her best political experience by far was making Barack Obama laugh at a stupid joke she told in March 2002.

Voting Begins in "Communist Country" Virginia

This isn't my first election, but still I woke up this morning with the kind of nerve-wracked excitement you get from a first day of school, a first marathon, a first date. As I will be a poll watcher later today, I had to wake up even earlier than I...

Mike Murphy's Talking Point Trash

Posted August 28, 2008 | 12:59 AM (EST)

There is a lot of history to be talked about during this Democratic Convention. Senator Clinton ran the most successful campaign for president a woman has ever run. Senator Obama became the first African American to be nominated by a major party for the office of president. Tomorrow night,...

McCain Calls Kettle Black, Again

If I had a nickel every time Senator John McCain became even more of a hypocrite, I'd own more than one pair of $520 Ferragamo loafers.

"Congress should come back into session," Senator McCain said yesterday, trying to look tough while chivvying Senator Barack Obama to come...

Isn't It Ironic, Don't You Think?

When I read that the White House is protesting NBC's edits of an interview with President Bush, I unconsciously started to hum Alanis Morisette's iconic hit, "Ironic." There ISN'T anything wrong with that

As a society we put a lot of emphasis on first words. "When, in the course of human events" is an oft-cited line. "One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind," is another. And for you Charles Schulz fans - "It was a dark and stormy night." Parents...

I'm a Bitter Middle Class American And Not Afraid To Say It

Posted April 12, 2008 | 12:28 PM (EST)

The role willful ignorance has played in this campaign just reached critical mass.

It was bad enough when Senator Clinton said that she landed under sniper fire in Bosnia, but "fake it til you make it" is a risky strategy that has paid off in the past. It was worse...

Stop Bucking Around

Posted April 3, 2008 | 01:36 PM (EST)

I'm by no means a presidential historian, but even I know that President Truman is the one who popularized the term, "the buck stops here." It's something I've always respected about Truman, that he understood that as the chief (executive, commander-in) of the United States of America, he was the...
