Finding Your Own Voice: QUOTES from Cameron Diaz, Gloria Steinem and Other Uncommon Women (PHOTOS)

Posted: 11/20/10 12:05 PM ET

Over the course of my career as a freelance journalist, I have had the great pleasure and privilege of talking to many of the world's most interesting and influential women, from actresses to activists, comediennes to poets, recording artists to Nobel Laureates. In my new book, "Daring to Be Ourselves: Influential Women Share Insights on Courage, Happiness and Finding Your Own Voice," I decided to bring together some of the most inspiring and empowering quotes from these interviews, broken into topical spreads and addressing a range of issues like equality, overcoming adversity, aging, beauty, finding balance and being more connected to the earth.

My hope is that the book conveys the important message that when we dare to be ourselves -- when we embrace our power, speak our truth, and believe in our dreams -- we can change the world. The following excerpts are a sampling of some of the amazing women, themes and reflections featured in the book.

If we're by ourselves we come to feel crazy and alone. We need to make alternate families of small groups of women who support each other, talk to each other regularly, can speak their truths and their experiences and find they're not alone in them, that other women have them, too ... It makes such a huge difference.

Daring to be ourselves means daring to be individuals - to be different. And to accept the rights of others to hold their own viewpoints. Daring to believe and act according to our values is the foundation of our voice.

As women, we can do better. We can learn to be more accepting of each other's ideas even when we don't fully agree. Make that, especially when we don't fully agree. You know what it's like to be cut off in mid-sentence. Listening without judgment is a gift to the speaker whereby you willingly concede the air time. And the return favor might be done for you as well. Let each be free in their thoughts, deeds, and voice -- and we'll be slow to judge.

When Gloria Steinam wrote about finding and listening to our inner voice, it was huge for me. It changed my life.

I found GS book, "Ruth's Song: and why she could not sing it" to be renching, real, and lovingly written for her mother who could not mother her. I will look for my book and read again. (not showing-up on Amazon - so not sure of title)

I have travelled all over the world to many cultures and many continents. One of the most fundamental rights is for women to be able to self determine their own lives...This is actually quite rare in the world..So, for those of us who live in cultures with give us the true freedoms and protections from gender roles and gender inequalities we must be role models and inspirations to women worldwide...so that as cultures mature and develop women will be able to realize their wholeness and full potential as human beings.

What I offer here is not a quote but a creed. Something I live by; something that
may be helpful to others.

INTUITION, spiritually and genetically bestowed upon one at birth, is critical to the
human survival mechanism. A behavioural characteristic that allows for the formation
of personal boundaries which enhances personal safety. For those who have been
sexually traumatized, this part of the survival mechanism has been eradicated.
For those who have not, the foundation of intuition lies in fact i.e., an event or
behaviour which is hidden, has not yet materialized, but always come to light.

Intuition informs you how and when you should or should not act before the events
or behaviour you intuited occurs. Failure to follow it in dire circumstances may
cost you your life.

Right now most of the most influential women in America are on the right, starting with Sarah Palin.

So how come all these quotes are from lefties?

Is it only ok to find your own voice if your own voice mirrors my world view?

Just sayin'.

What does Sarah Palin say that empowers women? I only hear her spouting Republican talking points. If I want to hear that, I can turn on Fox.

"Sarah Palin loves Alaska and I hope she stays there." - Barbara Bush

Since you are correct about the content of the quotes, here's one from a rightie.

This is good. We all need to use our voices -- women, men and, yes, children -- respectfully and fairly. Equally important, we need to listen to each other with our hearts. Then we can all know true empowerment, and move our society forward.

Ridiculous, PollyAnna-ish? Of course it may see so, but actually, it does work. Let's try it and see if I'm right.

Yes, absolutely. And though this book/post may feel directed to women and girls, it is definitely a message meant for men and boys too, to help them find and use their authentic voices, since there are just as many gender stereotypes and pressures impacting men as there are towards women in today's society.

Love these quotes. I also like Naomi Wolf's quote, "A mother who radiates self-love and self-acceptance actually vaccinates her daughter against low self-esteem."

Absolutely - I agree with that, especially as the mother of two daughters myself! (and there is a whole spread in my book called "What Message Would You Most Want to Instill in Young Girls?") Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

And what comment is that? That Gloria Steinem had no children or Alice Walker is in conflict with her daughter. In your mind, that disqualifies them from insights on finding one's voice?

My interpretation of how Jane meant "complete" was being unified in body, mind, spirit.

Makes some sense. Not perfect, but able to speak from a center of truth and honesty and confidence in oneself. Maybe?

I love it! I do love this concept of daring to be myself! I was nervous to launch my blog, but I knew I had found my voice and "couldn't keep quiet" as the quote so beautiful stated. http://livewithflair.blogspot.com/

That is what is so great about the Internet, blogging, social networking etc, is that it allows everyone a space to actually use our voices!

Brilliant quotes from FABulous Women.
As my new Kindle is charging 'Daring to be Ourselves' is my first Kindle book purchase. I am most excited to read this book for I have lived most of my adult life 'out of the box'.
My husband (comment was made a year before our marriage at age 42) said, "How perfect something was that I did" I turned politely and said: "I have never been perfect, nor will I ever be! Mostly I have no desire to be, I am me." Enough said for he asked me to marry him a year later.
I have always been independent with a mind of my own not looking for anyone to agree with me. I value a great conversation and admire various views on topics and do not judge or hold in contempt for ones thinking.

In my Thirties(a little late maybe) yet I learned that you need to love and be yourself for yourself first. Only then can you extend to others in various mediums. My Grandmother always told me this as I was growing up but I really never understood it. It always sounded selfish to me and she was the most loving and giving person I know. I am so grateful that I finally learned what she had preached all those years. Women are most powerful and together they form a unique group of wealth in knowledge, compassion, strength to the world. Congrats on your book.
