Over the course of my career as a freelance journalist, I have had the great pleasure and privilege of talking to many of the world's most interesting and influential women, from actresses to activists, comediennes to poets, recording artists to Nobel Laureates. In my new book, "Daring to Be Ourselves: Influential Women Share Insights on Courage, Happiness and Finding Your Own Voice," I decided to bring together some of the most inspiring and empowering quotes from these interviews, broken into topical spreads and addressing a range of issues like equality, overcoming adversity, aging, beauty, finding balance and being more connected to the earth.
My hope is that the book conveys the important message that when we dare to be ourselves -- when we embrace our power, speak our truth, and believe in our dreams -- we can change the world. The following excerpts are a sampling of some of the amazing women, themes and reflections featured in the book.

Muhtar Kent: This Century Goes to the Women
As women, we can do better. We can learn to be more accepting of each other's ideas even when we don't fully agree. Make that, especially when we don't fully agree. You know what it's like to be cut off in mid-sentence. Listening without judgment is a gift to the speaker whereby you willingly concede the air time. And the return favor might be done for you as well. Let each be free in their thoughts, deeds, and voice -- and we'll be slow to judge.

INTUITION, spiritually and genetically bestowed upon one at birth, is critical to the
human survival mechanism. A behavioural characteristic that allows for the formation
of personal boundaries which enhances personal safety. For those who have been
sexually traumatized, this part of the survival mechanism has been eradicated.
For those who have not, the foundation of intuition lies in fact i.e., an event or
behaviour which is hidden, has not yet materialized, but always come to light.
Intuition informs you how and when you should or should not act before the events
or behaviour you intuited occurs. Failure to follow it in dire circumstances may
cost you your life.
So how come all these quotes are from lefties?
Is it only ok to find your own voice if your own voice mirrors my world view?
Just sayin'.
Since you are correct about the content of the quotes, here's one from a rightie.
Ridiculous, PollyAnna-ish? Of course it may see so, but actually, it does work. Let's try it and see if I'm right.
As my new Kindle is charging 'Daring to be Ourselves' is my first Kindle book purchase. I am most excited to read this book for I have lived most of my adult life 'out of the box'.
My husband (comment was made a year before our marriage at age 42) said, "How perfect something was that I did" I turned politely and said: "I have never been perfect, nor will I ever be! Mostly I have no desire to be, I am me." Enough said for he asked me to marry him a year later.
I have always been independent with a mind of my own not looking for anyone to agree with me. I value a great conversation and admire various views on topics and do not judge or hold in contempt for ones thinking.
In my Thirties(a little late maybe) yet I learned that you need to love and be yourself for yourself first. Only then can you extend to others in various mediums. My Grandmother always told me this as I was growing up but I really never understood it. It always sounded selfish to me and she was the most loving and giving person I know. I am so grateful that I finally learned what she had preached all those years. Women are most powerful and together they form a unique group of wealth in knowledge, compassion, strength to the world. Congrats on your book.
