Senior Senate officials confirmed today that Leader Harry Reid continues to passionately look for votes to pass the Dream Act. Reid has promised to bring the bill that will create a new generation of legal American taxpayers out of the shadows by the end of this legislative session. The Act would provide a path to normalization for young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US as children.

Dream activists and Senate staffers are encouraged by signals that GOP Senators Lugar (IN) and Bennett (UT) will vote for the DREAM Act as a standalone bill. However more GOP Senators are necessary to win the day for the young potentially college and service-bound DREAM Act students.

Outgoing GOP Senator LeMieux (FL) is clearly seen as a potential supporter. In fact, Senate staffers involved in the vote count indicated that the Senator who has not announced his decision yet is a top target. The GOP in Florida is anxious to end their anti-immigrant positioning and a LeMieux vote for DREAM can only help. Nevada's Senator Ensign is also in the sights of DREAM supporters. Ensign must run for reelection in a state that just rejected an anti-immigrant Republican Senate candidate in the middle of a political environment that highly favored GOPers. Ensign clearly understands the demographics that rejected failed candidate Sharron Angle and should choose to avoid the anti-immigrant brand that ended her political aspirations.

Farther down the GOP target list is Senator Hutchinson from Latino-rich Texas, who has been under relentless pressure from local DREAM Act students. The Texas GOP will soon have to decide whether they want to remain the driving force in the Lone Star State in the future.

Of course we always hear that Senator McCain seems to be open to allowing a vote on the bill however I was not able to find anyone who wanted to predict where the flip flopping... er... I mean... mavericky Senator would end up when called to vote.

A key victory on the Democratic side of the aisle is the decision by Senator Landrieu (LA) to vote in support of the bill. Senator Landrieu has at times held her position on the bill close to the vest but top Senate sources indicated that she was fully on board.

Still on the target list on the Democratic side is Senator Kay Hagan of North Carolina. Senator Hagan is seen as a potential gain on the roster of yes votes and a top priority.

Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill from Missouri has still not taken a position on the bill and is seen as a critical target. McCaskill is a member of the Armed Services committee and is believed to be open to the argument that the DREAM Act would increase military recruitment.

Other potential Democratic spoilers include Ben Nelson and Montana's Max Baucus. Nelson had signaled earlier that he would not vote for the DREAM Act but activists today seemed to see a softening in his position. Senator Baucus, who gave the Obama Administration headaches during the health care reform debate, is seen as a key turnover who can be only delivered by the President himself. Maybe it's time for another beer summit that includes Obama, Baucus, and an over-21-year-old DREAM student.

The phones are buzzing in DC as Leader Reid is not holding back on using any tools at his disposal. The President has unleashed the DNC organizing tool "OFA," but since the policy of OFA is not to disclose the breadth of their efforts, it is still unclear who they are targeting and how many emails they have unleashed. That being said, the passion in the beltway now almost matches the deep passion brought to the debate by the youthful DREAM Activists themselves. The clock is ticking, the phones are ringing, and history is being made.

Remember, you can be a part of history by calling 202-224-3121 and asking for the offices of any of the targeted Senators on this list. The time to DREAM is now.

UPDATE -ALMOST FORGOTTEN: Sen. Scott Brown finds himself a target as well. Brown is in a state that values effectiveness over partisanship and this is a key test of his independence. Brown would do himself a huge favor by voting for DREAM.

By focusing on the Dream Act instead of the promised comprehensive immigration reform, Obama and the Dems are throwing more than ten million suffering undocumented immigrants under the bus. The Dream Act would only legalize some 825k immigrants and the rest would be left in the shadows for years to come.
The Dream Act must be stopped until it can pass within the framework of comprehensive immigration reform. DON'T LET OBAMA OFF THE HOOK!

E-mails are great but many people just ignore them. We need OFA generating phone calls, organizing supporters and holding events ie: prayer vigils, signature gathering etc. The support OFA is providing is greatly appreciated. Thanks OFA!

In reality the people that this bill will support are technically citizens, they've lived their entire lives here, some of them didn't even knew they were illegal till they applied to college or for a job so it just makes sense to allow them to be be part of this beautiful country because they already are, it's just that they are not on the books. They know the program, they r paying taxes, the work with us so it's not like they are taking up space either...... It's just a matter of understanding the pro's of the bill.

In the bill it affects those who came here up to age 15 and that is NOT spending most of their lives here. It becomes absurd when it also takes in those who are even 35 years old. THAT is rather stretching the kid label don't you think? To say that technically they are citizens shows such ignorance of the English language and law that it astounds me. If they were technically US citizens, they would NOT NEED such a bill! You might use the word practically and improve your English language skills.

I guess that you have not understood the current state of unemployment and tuition raises hitting this country. The illegals ARE taking jobs away from US citizens. They are keeping wages of Americans down. They are draining US resources in all kinds of areas such as education, welfare, food stamps, health care,etc..which are TAKEN from US citizens.

They are only a boon to those who profit from such conditions which are the unscrupulous employers and cheats. It is NO mystery why the Chamber of Commerce and employers love the idea of more cheap labor and an amnesty. The DREAM act is a nightmare for working Americans. Just remember what liberal FDR did during the Depression. He BANNED ALL immigration. We need to do as he did.

You are ignorant. The people who qualify for the DREAM, are the ppl who DESERVE it. Illegal immigrants:
1. Cannot receive food stamps
2. Cannot receive free health care
3. Pay for their education OUT OF POCKET
4. Cannot receive welfare
5. Cannot drive
6. Cannot hold legal jobs (the only jobs they're taking away are the ones that make your cheeseburger at McDonalds cost the dollar that it does)
7. Are STUCK within a monoculturalist and highly ignorant society

Granting these dreamers the opportunity to dream is only scratching the surface. These are the ones who were brought here by NO DECISION OF THEIR OWN. Do you understand that? Please...dont throw insults. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Just keep it educated, please.

Maybe some of us do need to improve our English language skills, but you might have to do some research and learn the facts before you start writting about something that obviously you have no idea about. And if you want to talk about ignorance? You should definetly start with yourself!.."illegals" as you called them CANNOT receive welfare, food stamps, unemployment etc as you mentioned, in order for a person (not an "illegal", because we are all humans) to take advantage of goverment help they must have a green card or be citizens of the U.S. You want to talk about "illegals" taking away jobs from US citizens?? How about if US citizens would actually get up and go look for a job instead of trying to live off of 250$ of unemployment?

They are not "technically citizens" they are ILLEGAL ALIENS!

The hatred is almost palpable.

The DREAM act is what we need. Why punish these kids who want a college education or serve the military? I fully support the DREAM act. These kids have a determination, and they want to be recognized as Americans, and not "illegals" or "foreigners." It's time for America to give them a chance.
09:47 PM on 11/30/2010
Right.
And then after they become citizens they sponsor their parents who are the ones responsible for all this.
Nope.
02:24 PM on 11/30/2010
What would be a DREAM for illegals is a NIGHTMARE for the rest of us. I hope this bill never comes up for a vote. Enforcement over amnesty.

Support the Dream Act. Texas rebel you need to wake up YOU are not the face of America. You are on your own. Immigration Reform is a necessity this country has done a great disservice to countries to the South for many decades. It is time to play fair. So many people would rather stay in their own countries if their governments had not been interfered with and destabilized by foreign forces. Yes we know what we are talking about. Immigrating north has been the only solutions for many families for what has been done to their country. Dream Act is the right choice.

In what way will it be a nightmare? Be specific.
