Underwear As Outerwear: What's Under Your Clothes Matters

Posted: Updated:

You remember when you were younger and your mom told you never to leave the house wearing dirty or unseemly underwear? She was right.

We live in a very interconnected world where everything you do, say or think affects your reality. Each of us possesses an energy, a life force present in the world, and how we think and behave determines not only how others perceive us, but how we perceive ourselves.

So how does this apply to underwear? More than you think actually.

Everything that you do is communicating something, either consciously, subconsciously, or both. At the basic level, what you wear beneath your clothes makes you feel more confident and self-assured, which will extend to every aspect of your life.

How the French Do Lingerie

Do you want to know how France came to be associated with romance? Many people believe it's the wine, the food, or the language. I believe it's something different, I think it has more to do with the lingerie.

You can hardly go five steps on the streets of Paris, or anywhere else in the country for that matter, without running into a lingerie store. Their elegantly designed display windows show a wondrous collection of brassieres, corsets, panties, and just about anything else you could imagine. To many American woman, to be continually confronted with scantily clad mannequins sporting garments they would only dream of wearing, seems somehow excessive.

As a culture, the French adore beautiful unmentionables. So much so that they spend about a fifth of their clothing budget on lingerie. Once again, this may seem excessive to many of you, but consider something.

Think back to the last time you bought something pretty for yourself. Something that someone may or may not have seen, whether it was a lacy bra or shimmery negligé. How did it make you feel when you put it on for the first time? Did you feel beautiful? Did it make you feel more confident? This isn't a coincidence. If a woman is wearing something she feels beautiful in, whether it's out in the open or underneath her clothing, she sends a very powerful message to herself and the world, a message which manifests itself as a combination of confidence and intrigue.

The French know this instinctively, and make it a part of their lives. Because if a woman feels more confident, she'll act more confidently. What you wear beneath your clothes goes a long way towards making that possible.

Wear Lingerie for You

Sure, if you've got a hot date you're going to put more thought into what bra and panties you leave the house in, but you should start to make a habit of doing this anyway. It doesn't matter if you're single, just seeing someone casually, or if you have been in a relationship for a long time, your unmentionables are sending a message. Wearing great lingerie tells your subconscious that you think your worth it, in the same way that wearing distressed undergarments communicates the opposite.

So take a long look at your underwear drawer. It's time to say farewell to some of the unmentionable unmentionables. If it's been there for years, throw it out. It's carrying old energy from an old you. Next, remove anything that's damaged or well-worn. If you'd be ashamed to have anyone see you wearing it, you don't need it. You shouldn't have to see yourself wearing it either.

Then consider what's left. If what remains won't last you more than a week without a wash, it's time for a shopping trip. No, it doesn't have to make up 20% of your annual clothing budget -- maybe closer to 15 percent.

Because, let's be honest, you're worth it.
