Amber Cole is My Daughter

I was too busy raising my two daughters, aged thirteen and eight, to pay much attention to Amber Cole, but the truth is that Amber Cole is my daughter and the daughter of so many of us.

Unlike Jimi Izrael's recent suggestion, I have not seen the so-called Amber Cole video. That so many have -- and in the process downloaded and trafficked in illegal child pornography -- speaks volumes about how we, as a society, think about Black girls. For that reason alone, Amber Cole is my daughter.

I suspect that for far too many, who have voiced displeasure and alarm about Amber Cole, and or the parenting skills of the adults responsible for her, it is less about real concern for Cole and more likely about the collective shame that she evokes. Unfortunately it is such shame, and the politics of respectability that go hand-in-hand with Black collective shame, that often keeps us from having honest discussions about sex and sexuality in our communities -- often to the detriment of our children.

Ironically, this shame is seemingly always directed towards the women and girls in our communities and rarely extended to the men and boys who are complicit in sex acts. It goes without saying, that in the case of Amber Cole, such complicity is indeed criminal; under the law, a 14-year-old cannot consent to sex acts. Too often our conversations with our boys is not to discourage underage sex acts -- indeed such acts viewed as a rite of passage for boys -- but rather, to caution them about impregnating a partner, whether she consents or not. Few have mentioned rape in response to this case, the reality of the act over-shadowed by the resentment and ire that Amber Cole has drawn from many.

As such, there are some who will claim that Amber Cole's behavior is the product of slack parenting, single-parent households and the continued erosion of values within Black families. Still others, part-time psycho-analysts, will suggest that Amber Cole's behavior is a cry out for the kind of attention that only a (presumably missing) father can provide or, as Jimi Izrael argues, the actions of a girl whose mother was too busy being everything but a mother. It all sounds correct in a society that cares little about Black girls and even less about what motivates them to do the things that they do. No one is questioning the parenting skills of the parents of the boys in the video.

Despite our shame and consternation, Amber Cole is not the first -- and will not be the last teenage girl to engage in sex acts -- consensual or not.

If Amber Cole was my own daughter, I would have first asked her if she felt safe and if she was coerced into such acts. If it was her choice, I would ask without judgment, whether it was her desire to give pleasure, derive pleasure, or both, by engaging in such acts. It would be at that point that we would talk about the myriad ways that teenagers, sexually attracted to each other, can engage in pleasurable and age appropriate activities that allow all to safely express their sexual attraction. We would also discuss that it is never appropriate for such acts to be recorded and circulated, unless agreed upon by consenting adults.

In our indignation at Amber Cole, we have forgotten that she is still teenager, not yet a woman, who should not feel ashamed about her healthy sexual desires. Amber Cole needs not our stern lectures or our prayers, but just the opportunity to be simply a 14-year-old girl again.

i completely disagree with this article. i dnt like how it completely victimizes amber bcuz she is not a total victim...she consented. when the video leaked amber was busy trying to get chris brown and justin beiber to follow her on twitter. the girl was trying to become a celebrity through this.so no i dont feel sorry for her.

Also, over the weekend there have been three similar cases involving young WHITE GIRLS, age 13 - 14! I have yet to witness the constant naming and tearing down of these little girls. The white community seems to understand and value their children in a way that I now see BLACK FOLKS NEVER WILL!

p.s. please print the names of the boys involved in this mess of lies and manipulation! We have no idea if this little girl was beaten into submission, we have no idea what the hell happened so we need to get the police, FBI etc on the case. What is taking so long to learn about the MALES INVOLVED? This continues to be just another case of abuse against a young black female child IMO!

Part of the regulations of the menstruation ceremony involves ritual behavior. The young woman carried a scratch stick for she is not allowed to touch or scratch her body or to comb her hair. Throughout the ceremony, she remained in stark silence. No one is allowed to talk to her or her to anyone else. Since her very look is thought to be powerful and dangerous to men, she gazed downward and away. Her feet must not touch the earth at any time during this ritual nor should she touch water or any utensil. Her gaze must not meet the sight of light neither sun nor moon. Once the ceremony neared its end, the young woman emerged from the Eastern side of the hut. Prior, she had descended into the menstrual hut from the Western direction. Sometimes afterward, the hut and everything associated with the sacred rite is burned or buried. Some native women, however maintained a menstrual hut that was used for generations. This hut and the space it occupied came to represent incredible primordial and ancestral energy. No man ventured near it or the space it occupied. All rites of passage for young women is not the same in every community but it is for certain that this is a very important part if every woman’s life, enhancing collective female bonding and maternal traditions. A woman’s relationship to her body is regulated by menstrual law in the seclusion rites. Her relationship to sex, food, behavior, sleeping, clothing and make-up are all determined by the sacred blood right of woman’s menstruation. At the end of seclusion, which ends at the first light, the taboo woman is frequently carried by a group of Mothers to the nearest body of water. There in the river, lake or stream, she is washed and cleansed. Her hair is braided and adorned with beads, cowries, gems, feathers, clay and hennas. Her body is then either painted, dyed, clayed, tattooed, powdered, oiled and smudges with herbs and incense. Once this is done, she is covered with the finest fabrics the clan could produce. Her feet are anointed and decorated with coins, hennas and other pigments, metal jewelry and wrapped in beautiful slippers. Then emerging more dazzling and bright than the brightest star, the woman is welcomed with a week long, sometimes months of feasting, celebrating, singing and dancing. At some time afterward, being communally claimed as a full adult, the woman entered marriage and then came a part of the next blood rite which is motherhood.MA
