The Emmys aren't just about honoring the finest achievements in television. They are also about teaching valuable lessons to us, the home viewers. With that in mind, I would like to share the five lessons I learned by watching last night's Emmy telecast.

I know this isn't about this article, but where's my True Blood fix? I really need it.

I am thrilled that Kyra took it for The Closer. Her Brenda Leigh Johnson is smart, strong, sassy, damaged and quirky; she gives that character real life and deserves to be recognized. I'm also happy that after all the years she made compromises in the work she took so she could raise her children and honour her arrangement that one of them would always be home with the kids, she got her chance and she succeeded. Well done, Kyra. Well done, Kevin. A good marriage in Hollywood; no scandals, no affairs; it is possible after all ! I look forward to more great work from Kyra and Brenda Leigh.

Gotta say I watched just because I'm a Glee fan. Won't say I'm a full blow Gleek but the show clicks with me. I was delighted by the opening sequence and I think Jimmy Fallon did an outstanding job of keeping the show interesting and moving forward. There were a lot of genuine laughs which is not something you can often say about an awards show.

The surreal part was all the celebration of people I'd never heard of (or had passing awareness of). Either I'm getting old the fact that I'm too cheap for anything beyond basic cable is catching up to me. I had to google 80% of the winners.

Ahhh Mark. You know very well I'm down as can be that "True Blood" didn't win, bu tthe nigh twas saved when the tree cast members walked out on stage and especially our tall drink of delicious water Eric. It was sort of mystical though seeing him standing next to and over Ann Margaret; she looked liked Minnie Mouse, hilarious since she once sounded like Minnie Mouse and then opened her mouth last night and out came Darth Vader.

The biggest lesson we ALL learned last night, is that the Emmy's CAN be done in the allotted time, and need not run over. This one clocked in about 3 minutes under the time slot. Well done Jimmy!!!

I don't know why you have issue with the Betty White sex jokes, after all, her most famous and groundbreaking role was as Suann Niven. She has been a sexy woman all her life. I find it wonderful that she isn't thrown out of that gategory simply because she aged. I think it does us a world of good to have older woman finally being able to be sexual and funny. And if Betty White thought she wasn't being used in the right way, she would say something, she has ALWAYS been vocal about her views.

Hi Robert! Thanks for commenting. I really don't have a problem with sex jokes about Betty White (or about seniors in general.) I just have a problem with the endless stream of them. At this point, jokes like that are almost painfully predictable, which makes them less funny (for me, at least.) And while you're right that White played Suann Niven, show also played the flighty Rose Nylun. It would be nice if the current television world would let her stretch just as much. She's a great Sassy Granny, but she'd be great doing other stuff, too.

Golden Girls was a perfect example of og what you mean Mark. The show started off as really funny and remained so for a long tme but after a while all the, geez look, old people talking about sex and sex and sex and sex got tiring. I guess the writers couldn't come up with anything else. Sex is fine but when you have no new ideas, go for the cheap shot, and that's exactly what Betty White has allowd herself to get involved with. If not sex, a senior with a spewing forth dirty words. LOL That's always another last resort.

I think Betty would be excellent in a powerful dramatic role. She already has strong audience emphathy which could really add a punch to the right role. Carol Burnette and other funny ladies have crossed that bridge with excellent results.

The heck with Kyra, she's already won. Connie Britton should have won for the past four years. At least she finally got nominated. Friday Night Lights still gets no respect.

I agree re: Connie Britton.

But Kyra has not won an Emmy for "The Closer." She won a Golden Globe and a People's Choice.

No Emmy.

I also love "The Closer."

So if Connie was "robbed," I'm glad it went to Kyra.

That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.

grins.

The opening was excellent, and Jimmy Fallon was a very good host. An enjoyable evening of Tee Vee all around, and who can be a grinch about that?

1 lesson I learned from last night's Emmy telecast:

I'm glad I got rid of my television over a decade ago.
