Ali's Story: Uninsured in America

Posted: 10/19/09 06:03 PM ET

Ali Vatter works very hard. As part of the catering crew on this summer's blink-182 tour, she was among the first to get up in the morning and the last to go to bed at night. Everyday Ali helped set up a mobile kitchen, prepare and serve four meals a day for hundreds of people, and stock dressing rooms and buses, only to pack it all back up and repeat the process the next day. About two months into the tour, at a show in Florida, she took ill and was rushed to the hospital. There the doctors determined she required emergency surgery to remove her appendix.

Three days later, Ali walked out of the hospital and rejoined the tour. Out on the road, Ali and I discussed her surgery, and she informed me she was uninsured. My initial reaction was disbelief. Why would you not have insurance? Especially while on tour? Turns out I was asking the wrong question. The real question is: Why are you unable to get insurance?

Talking to Ali more, she has been trying to get health insurance for years, but companies keep rejecting her. She has pre-existing conditions that insurance companies either cover while requiring crippling premiums, or flatly refuse any coverage whatsoever. In any case, Ali has for years been trying in vain to get proper health insurance. Her luck ran out in Florida. Then the bills arrived.

Ali's surgery and hospital bills exceed $48,000. There is no way for her to afford that payment. What are her options? Try and secure a loan? Declare bankruptcy? At wit's end, Ali put together a website explaining her situation and asking people to donate any money they could to help her pay off this debt (www.thealivattermatter.blogspot.com). To try and help raise the needed money, I took to my Twitter account to say that I would personally match every dollar donated until her bills were repaid. Time will tell how much money Ali can raise through the kindness of strangers.

Ali's situation is a small portrait of a much larger issue being debated in national headlines and the hallways of Washington DC right now. Health care in America. The question is systemic in nature and problem: How do we as a nation provide quality health care to all of our citizens?

It seems like a simple enough question. But yet, every day too many Americans go about their lives without proper coverage, with the risk of serious injury and financial ruin looming over their head if they fall ill or require surgery. This past month, I have seen the effect of unavailable and inadequate health insurance firsthand. Does anyone believe that the current system still works effectively? How and in what way do we change our current structure?

Every day, while our elected officials and corporations argue over the best way to fix the problem of health care in America, more people like Ali are falling through the cracks, into bankruptcy and inadequate care. Mr. President, members of congress, hospitals, doctors, and insurance companies, there has to be a better way. When a person's best option to pay for healthcare is to take to the internet and ask for small donations from strangers, bold changes need to be made.

I like the point that Mark Hoppus is matching dollar per dollar amout, but heres the problem with government healthcare. First do I want the corupt tax spending government to take care of me. Look how bad the Medicare system and the already pre existing sytems like Tenn care are doing. Here in Tennessee Medicare and Tenn care turn down more people than the regular system, so who are they to blame the other companys. Truth betold our health system is why all the British and most foreign people come to this country to get healthcare. There system sucks and its been proven, and the taxes over there are twice as much as ours. So how do we fix this system. First take a look at the laws that are in the healthcare system. This is how the government has already drove up the costs, and some of these laws are ridiculous and useless. So first lets do away with those, especially the 1's that allow no private health insurance companies to be set up. Then set up smaller, cheaper companies and that in turn will create competition that will drive down the costs just like Walmart keeps businesses like Target's prices down with competition.

I agree with Mark Hoppus. you guys need help care like in Canada. in Canada medical emergencies are covered by the government as well as regular check ups and other things and are all paid by taxes from Canadian citizens. Sweden and some other countries have the same thing. for something to happen like that is ridiculous. how could they expect someone to pay that amount of money? it seems the government only cares about the people who have enough money to pay for all of that but they should care about everyone because everyone deserves to live and for someone that was so hardworking, and it was impossible to live and get surgery. I dunno you're doing all you can Mark I wouldn't expect you to give all your money to her because it's not like she's your best friend or someone you've known for years but you're doing all you can and I respect that but seriously something needs to be done about American health care. I really think you guys should have something like us Canadians have although you guys already have so much taxes now so I dunno. :S good luck Mark and good luck Ali! I love you!

I can't believe the attitude of some people, this man is paying $24000 to a person working in craft services how many of you would pay that to the person working in your kids schools cafeteria, or the person who sold you your coffee this morning to help their medical bills, does he have the money to pay the whole bill ya but he is still paying $24000 that is a lot of money.

The problem isn't hey this rock star isn't paying all of the medical bills to a person he happens to meet during a tour, it's the fact that a person in what is supposed to be the greatest country in the world has to fear the fact that if they get sick they may loose everything they have worked there life for just to get better. I am from Canada and not that our system is perfect but I had to have my appendix taken out and had to be in the hospital for 8 days, not 3, and at the end of the 8 days what happened, I went home, no bills, no setting up a website to raise more money than I make in a year, not having to know rock stars that are willing to give me $24000 to help and tell the world about my problem, no worrying that the health insurance will try to find an excuse not to pay, I went home only having to worry about feeling better.

I can't stand the mentality of some of you people when you mention merchandise sales etc and why isn’t some of this money going to charity. WTF? Do people criticise you because you’re not giving your hard earned cash to charity? No, I don’t think so. Just because someone is doing well for themselves, does not give you the right to snub them for making money. Plain stupid.

More to the point however, you obviously have no idea what these 3 gents do for charity and the world in general, especially over the past 8+ months – using their good name to help publicise charities AND giving their time and money to these. I hold my hands up, they do more for charity than I do.

This article by Mr. Hoppus is clearly to build AWARENESS of how NAFF your healthcare system is in America for the uninsured (who even when they try, cannot get insured). He is quite rightly shouting out that this is complete and utter MADNESS.

What the HELL are some of you people on? Really, some of your high horses are a tad too high.

Don't be jerks! Mark doesn't have to do anything, but he is already going to probably be paying half of her bill! Plus, this way he gets the word out about her and what she has been through! I think he is an amazing guy and I'm very proud to be his fan after this! I will be donating.

Universal Health care the answer? Every other country is doing it. France has the best health care in the world. O.o Watch the movie SICKO! My health class is forever talking about this.

First of all it's unrealistic to attack a celebrity for the money that they make. Understand why the writing of this article is valuable. He clearly has made an effort to help this woman and one shouldn't have an 'all or nothing' perception when it comes to helping others. Awareness is key. So while this article might sound naive to those of us who have been intimately aware of the deficiencies of our healthcare system for sometime, it is an honest effort to get things to change. And I applaud it. I feel for Ali and she is lucky to have your help but there are so many people right now suffering similar horror stories with no assistance. But that's not the point. The point is that they all are being let down by the same healthcare system and it's unacceptable. This piece is another battle cry and we all need to cry as one.
Three years ago my father lost his job and insurance and then got into an accident and badly injured his leg. They now rely on the money I make working abroad in Japan. It seems I'm stuck here when all I want to do is go home. It's like a ripple in a pond, it's effects are felt on and on. When will people realize that having members in our society who don't have access to affordable healthcare affects us all in so many ways.. Health should be a right.

There are only a few comments here, and judging from his Twitter, I know Mr. Hoppus is vain enough to read a couple before they pile-up. Hoppus: This may be cliche, said enough, but man-up and explain how it is out of reason for a multi-millionaire to fix messes just like this. You have the cash to go around. Matching every dollar is simply not enough. Spreading awareness amongst the uniformed is great and dandy, but there are hundreds you can be helping. I'm sick of celebrities flaunting such charitable agendas when they carry more than enough cash to eradicate the disease. Time is not sacrifice. Small percentages of extraordinary earnings are not sacrifices. No preacher should be sitting in such wealth, if he truly believes. Mr. Hoppus, when the government fails, this is where the people come in.

Wow Mark im suprised to see that you are caring of another person outside of your band. Yes there are millions of people who have the same problem as your friend. many from southern california who I am trying to help through various volunteer work i do. Im from ohio, and im helping people in your state... maybe you should jump on board. and tell your friend tom, the one who as i quote "wants to change the world" should jump on board too instead of selling 60 dollar angels and airwaves sweatshirts or 30 dollar blink 182 posters. i bet none of that money is going towards you friend is it? dont worry, next year when im out of the marines, ill set the example with my band and show how its done. welp happy tweeting, hope to hear from you. best of luck ali!

we have two giant issues right now: housing foreclosures and health insurance. one of the main reasons people end up being foreclosed on is because of mile high medical bills due to being uninsured. so even the people that CAN afford their mortgage, still have to dodge the bullet of insurance companies denying coverage and ending up declaring bankruptcy. people try to say its just the poor looking for handouts. to them i say, walk out your front door and look around. you think you live in a nice area? i bet you'd be surprised by how many on your own block are going through the motions in either or both problems. great piece, mark. its great to see people use their celebrity status to promote awareness and change for everybody rather than just relish in the lifestyle.

wow Mark. This is a great story to get out in the public eye. Recently, my father lost his job and we are trying to get insurance. This is a sad situation for our economy to be in.
