WATCH: Homeless Mom Calls for Help

Posted: 07/11/11 12:42 PM ET

What happens when you empower a homeless mom with a video camera? We get to see first-hand homeless service's failed systems. I wrote this partially in response to comments left on the initial post I wrote last week , and partially because Carey is tired of a broken system and sick of people jumping to conclusions about how easy it is to find support needed. I have two cell phones, a laptop and a car, and I work in homeless services, and I cannot find help for people, so how the heck can a homeless mom find help?

In this video taken from her blog Carey calls homeless service providers for help. This is powerful insight into a broken system that we need to fix.

It appears the more the US citizens need the help of the government the more difficult the government makes it for them to get their needs met. If it doesn't benefit corporations the government doesn't want to do anything for the common citizens.

I have a 140 IQ, tons of job skills, social skills and research abilities and could not figure out how to get help from any of the systems or organizations that promise help. The *system* is broken and unable to do much more than get pay checks to the people who work for it and little to nothing for those who need it. The people who get help are those who are mentally ill, addicts or sex workers or women running from an abusive spouse. 20% of those who need homeless services use 80% of the services. Waiting lists are bogus and those who get help are most likely to be abusive, persistent, rude, demanding and chronically homeless. There's a very strong belief that those who aren't totally broken, addicted or screwed up don't NEED services because they can obviously "figure it out" themselves. It took me 18 months to get off of the streets - BY MYSELF. God save those with fewer resources - including this mom. I did the same - worked full-time to save money while I lived in the van and saved up to find an affordable apartment across the country. It's insane.
