Secretary of State Clinton? I Just Don't Get It

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

For the life of me I just don't understand why a) President-elect Obama would want to choose Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State and b) she would accept the post.

Why would Obama want to tarnish his brand new administration with the Clinton soap opera of Monica, Whitewater, Vince Foster, Marc Rich and company when he could start fresh with an entirely new team? And why would he want a mortal enemy like Hillary who is probably at this very moment plotting her comeback strategy for 2012, inside his administration, leaking to the press and undermining him? I thought he put the Clintons away for good. He seems too smart to do something like this.

Then again I don't understand Hillary's reasons either. Why would she want to take the post of Secretary of State, not exactly traditionally a stepping-stone position to the Presidency when she could stay in the Senate, knock off Harry Reid and become Majority Leader and be in good shape either for a rematch against Obama in 2012 or a run at Joe Biden in 2016.

Hey, they can get hitched if they want to, but it just doesn't make any sense to me.

You're absolutely, spot on correct: at least one of them is making a serious error.

Tigers, it is said, do not change their stripes. If so, then it's Mrs. Clinton who will lose. Through sheer arrogance and ambition she's apparently about to take on a job for which she is not remotely prepared or qualified and from which she can be dismissed for good reason, bad reason or no reason at the mere whim of the President. Unless Mrs. Clinton has suddenly transformed into a submissive, soft-spoken diplomat, her chances of succeeding as Secretary of State are akin to Monica's chances of winning Bill back.

As for Barack, although his years in New York converted him to thin-crust pizza, he remains a Chicago-style politician--of the sort who might lure an opponent into a position of vulnerability only to blithely, at the first plausible opportunity, saw off the tree limb on which that opponent sought to nest. Bill Richardson could easily replace Mrs. Clinton as Secretary of State by next December in a classic "cabinet shuffle".

Mark, do you suppose that that will be President Obama's first Christmas gift to his progressive base?

I get some of it but, some is not worth the price to pay later. It is sort of like all the foriegn investors we allowed in our economy and then, horrified when the economy suddenly took a dive? Like how much money has been pumped into our economy by "slick deals in the back rooms"?
The Bushes, the Chaneys, and sadly the Clintons? I know Hillary wants to amend all the things that happened but, she cannot do it by towering over the Elect like this. It is like I didn't win but, I am going to get this or I am taking my marbles home. What? All I can say is watch our Obama! Love ya but, on this one I am a little weary myself.
