This has been one of the worst kept secrets in the world but it's finally out: Bono and U2 are about a million times more devout than they have let on. Every time I'd read a silly Bono interview like this one, where Bono basically has the interviewer convinced that he isn't even a Christian (or 'a member of the band'), I'd think of this not so secret recording and chuckle.

I'm not even sure where I got this pilfered recording, but somebody gave it to me 10 years ago or so. Having written two books that included chapters on U2 and Bono, I struggled with whether to include it in my books, but decided against it. This may not have been a church service exactly, but it's about as close as you can get. As such, I thought Bono and the band deserved privacy. And so did many other artists, authors and critics who never mentioned this recording in public, but quietly passed it among themselves.

It's hard to argue with someone who thinks God told him to do something, but it sure seems tacky to take these private tapes and make a buck off of them.
