Overrated: The 11 Most Overrated Things Of The Decade (PHOTOS)

Posted: 12/ 8/10 09:35 AM ET

"Name the most overrated things of the decade!" was my brief. Fine, but I thought that the decade -- whatever it was called -- finished at the end of 2009 (just like the nineties had finished in 1999, or the eighties in 1989). Many words have already been wasted arguing about whether the decade finishes this year, or finished 12 months ago. It is in danger of becoming one of the year's most overrated debates.

Whenever the decade began, we can now see in hindsight that a few things were highly overrated. Most of us now agree that President Bush's post-9/11 approval rating was a little higher than necessary, and that President Obama, for all his promise, was not the Second Coming (and neither, even more strangely, was Tiger Woods). We now know that Marion Jones, Floyd Paterson and JT LeRoy might have required less adulation. Enthusiasm over the War in Iraq has waned, ethanol in our tanks is no longer expected to save the world, and everyone has stopped watching Heroes.

But a few people and things still need to be cut down to size...

“The New Atheism”
1 of 12
With religion the reason (or the excuse) for everything from 9/11 to the Tea Party, God has seen better decades. So, just as it was cool in the nineties to come out as gay, it was cool in the 2000s (especially for really smart people) to adopt another once-scandalous lifestyle choice: atheism. The non-believers were inspired by such prophets as Christopher Hitchens (who devised the term “the new atheism”) and Richard Dawkins. Hitchens’ book God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything was (as you might guess) an attack on religion, justifying the author’s own passionate atheism. This is like complaining against the management of the Elvis Presley Fan Club, and hence concluding that Elvis didn’t really exist.

Dawkins’ book The God Delusion at least spends some time arguing why God doesn’t exist, based mainly on Charles Darwin’s theories. Darwin would probably be surprised that atheists talk about him so much, because he himself was not an atheist. Sure, there’s good reason to criticize religion and promote science… but exactly how does that prove that God doesn’t exist? The new atheism might be cool, but it makes about as much sense as… as… well, religion.

Disclaimer: Born a Catholic, I still lean towards believing in God (no, I can’t be bothered justifying that), and was not convinced by the arguments in The God Delusion. I’m not gay either, so I haven’t been even remotely “cool” since 1989.

Or maybe not. Sorry, but in Presley’s day, a record would have to sell a heck of a lot more units to make number one.

That's because records were mainly sold as twoSong 45s....not as complete Albums.
After several 45's were released then a compilation album would come out contain all of the 45s' songs plus some new ones.

So Mariah's Achievement is still Remarkable in comparison

Maybe you should "bother" to justify your belief in god. You might find out what the fuss is all about. Perhaps your faith is overrated.

Dear Mark Juddery: I can see why you would want to disparage "really smart people." But I was indeed an atheist long before I ever heard of Hitchens or Dawkins. What you're failing to comprehend, is that "really smart people" can think for themselves. The reason atheists have been more vocal in recent years is that, quite frankly, we've had enough of being pushed around and marginalized by, among others, media hacks desperate for an attention-grabbing headline. Good day.

I'm always perplexed when "the god delusion" is referenced, because almost inevitably, when it is referenced in a negative form, it is extremely apparent the person making the reference either didn't actually read it, or didn't try very hard.

Dawkins does not say evolution proves god is false....that is absurd. What dawkins says is evolution allows atheists to be intellectually satisfied. In other words, instead of saying "I don't know how it happened, but I know the zombie jew hypothesis isn't convincing", there is a sensible answer to how humans got here.

The only reason the god-hypothesis would be effected by the theory of evolution, is because some people (creationists) assert their god requires for evolution to be false. Not all religions are that stupid.

Way to pick on those in the minority. You swipe at both the gays and atheists as merely positions to take in order to be "cool", I'm sure a hypothetical Jesus/God would be proud.

I don't think the rise of atheism is a fad at all. People are starting to realize the insanity and irrationality of religion. As society gets more and more educated, belief in MAGIC goes down accordingly. It's time to put god in a box on the shelf right next to leprechauns and unicorns.

Yea, one day in the 2000s, I thought to myself, "Wow, I'm bored. I need a NEW lifestyle choice. Something exciting. I know! I won't believe in god." /sarcasm

Not believing in a god is as much of a lifestyle choice as collecting stamps.

I've check out many of the major forms of Christianity (of the over 38,000 commercially available for purchase), and I cannot un-see what I've witnessed. I cannot unlearn the facts about these ancient forms of control.

When it comes to not believing in a god, I am convinced that I do not have a choice.

For the 2010s, whenever someone says something silly, I'm going to accuse them of "Juddery."

It's NOT something to do to be cool.

But since you're interested in belittling someone's position, it should be recognized that "Compulsive Christianity" is all the rage. Just go to church on Xmas and Easter, SAY that you believe in the bible (without having ever read it), and POOF! You've got morals, you're a Christian, AND people in the community will accept you.

They don't REALLY buy all this nonsense.

Sounds like a lifestyle choice to me.

Hear! Hear!

I'm going to add "juddery" to my vocab too.
04:47 PM on 12/11/2010
Mr. Juddery, I sincerely wish the "New Atheism" were overrated. Honestly. That would mean that our message had been spread far and wide and been judged as even more profound than it is. Alas, that is certainly not the case. I do dream of a day when irrational and hurtful faith-based actions are so rare as to make vocal atheism unnecessary.

"Darwin would probably be surprised that atheists talk about him so much, because he himself was not an atheist."

What the hell does this mean? Perhaps the rest of the items in the list are good, the the first item is so incoherent that I can't make out what it's trying to say. It order for something to be "overrated", mustn't it be 'rated" first? Who 'rates' religious belief/disbelief? I wasn't aware it was a fashion statement.

Some atheists don't pick up on how they're the opposite side of the coin. Militant atheist or fundamentalist christian, both groups just seem like people with an agenda, an agenda that isn't as concerned about making an honest examination of the evidence as much as convincing the largest number of people possible that they're right. Large portions of Christopher Hitchen's and Richard Dawkin's books are ad hominem abuse, indirectly attacking religious view points by pointing out all the bad things people have done in the name of religion, which is intellectually dishonest for men who claim rational thinking and logical for their side.
04:24 PM on 12/11/2010
Please present proof - ANY proof - that any worshiped deity exists. Only then are your claims even remotely reasonable.
02:25 PM on 12/12/2010
That's the point, there's no way to prove that god does or doesn't exist. Both atheists and religious groups are being intellectually dishonest if they are trying to claim their beliefs are more than just personal convictions which can't be proven. Two sides of the same coin
05:04 PM on 12/11/2010
I love the word "militant" when it's used to describe Atheists. It means "talking and admitting that you don't believe in god."

Is that REALLY militant?
02:44 PM on 12/12/2010
I agree it's probably a poorly defined term. It's a term that religious people seem to use to refer to atheists who they perceive as being too aggressive. I think fundamentalist is kind of a similar term too, it's just the term an atheist would use to refer to a religious zealot. They both seem like two words that either side uses to refer to each other. Whatever the words technically mean, I've never heard them used for people who simply admit that they either do or don't believe in god, it's usually more related to how vocal they are about their views.
10:50 PM on 12/10/2010
Did Mr Juddery actually read Hitchens' book? It's not a justification of atheism, it's a criticism of organized religion, regardless of belief.
As a life-long atheist, I don't think atheism is either "cool" or "overrated".

Nicely said, not that this discussion is of global import but the initial assertion was off base enough that I thought it deserved comment. Thanks for handling it.
