Look, I know it sounds a little ridiculous right now, but when one reads about actor Kal Penn, weed-addled, eponymous Kumar in the Harold and Kumar movies, getting a standing O at the inaugural concert, let us not sneer. First consider, from the Chicago Tribune by way of Andrew Sullivan:
With high-profile celebrities including Bono, Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington present, actor Kal Penn--star of the sophomoric "Harold & Kumar" movies--drew the biggest reaction from the family. Sasha gave him a standing ovation, while Malia giggled and Michelle Obama waved.
But then read about the sophisticated class that Kumar--I mean Kal Penn--taught at the University of Pennsylvania this past year, and how he claims to be a political junkie. And consider that Indian Americans are an ethnic group of rising wealth and increasing numbers, probably ready to begin asserting political power. And then consider this shrewd political observer's prediction that Kumar--I mean Kal Penn--could end up in politics.
Not so far-fetched...

Stop making it sound like the man is a stoner in real life. It's called acting, and that's a part he played. (FYI- Kal Penn currently plays a doctor on the TV show House. Does that somehow make him seem to have more gravitias to you?) He worked very hard on the Obama campaign, and is being rocognised for that. Pretty simple.
