"The Tesseract Is Here!"

What happens when you put a movie scientist in a room with a real scientist?

In The Avengers movie, everyone is fighting over something called the Tesseract. It is a source of unlimited energy and whoever controls it is the winner. That may be a movie device, but the truth is, the Tesseract is here. The Tesseract for us is the power of wind, water, and sunlight (WWS) -- natural, clean, and renewable energy resources.

Movies give flight to our collective imaginations. Science mixed with inventive imagination and pop culture collectivism can change our world for the better and give us a vision of our future. On May 20, in his blog post, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu mentioned The Avengers when asking Congress to extend the renewable energy tax credits. He is right to ask for such a thing, but we are capable of so much more. We are standing on the threshold of an energy revolution and are determined to let the world know.

Our vision is to convert the world's energy infrastructure for all purposes to one powered by WWS technologies. This vision sounds like a fantastic movie; but it is real and based on science. It is not 100 or 50 years away. It is now, and each individual can and should strive to make it happen for the benefit of humankind.

The consequence of not acting is the continuation of 2.5 - 3 million annual air pollution deaths worldwide, land and water pollution, global warming, Arctic ice disappearance, coastal flooding, heat stress deaths, agricultural loss, severe weather, ocean acidification, higher damage costs to us all, and energy, economic, and political instability.

The vision involves converting our energy infrastructure to electricity and electricity-produced hydrogen for all purposes. WWS electricity sources include wind, solar (photovoltaics and concentrated solar), geothermal, hydroelectric, tidal, and wave power. Vehicles, ships, and trains will run on batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, and battery-hydrogen hybrid technologies, where the electricity or hydrogen is produced from WWS power.

Air and water heating and cooling will run on electric heat pumps, heat exchangers, and solar hot water heaters. Industrial processes will run on hydrogen and electricity. Buildings will be retrofitted to conserve energy.

The conversion from combustion to clean electricity will reduce world power demand by a third due to the efficiency of electricity. Sunlight in sunny locations and wind in windy locations over land can provide 30 and six times, respectively, the resulting world power needed for all purposes. The area required for such power is equivalent to only half the Sahara desert, with most being open space between wind turbines that can be used for many purposes.

Reliably matching power demand with supply is feasible. Wind and solar are complementary; when the wind is not blowing during the day the sun is usually shining, and vice versa. Hydroelectricity can fill in gaps as it does now. Additional reliability can be obtained with incentives to use electricity at non-peak times and by producing hydrogen with excess electricity.

What about system failure? The average maintenance downtime of new wind turbines is 2 percent on land and less than 5 percent offshore. That of France's 59 nuclear reactors is 22 percent. When a coal, nuclear, or gas plant fails, a large fraction of the grid fails. When a wind turbine goes down, only a minor part fails. More important, the chance of catastrophe caused by nature or terrorists acting on wind or solar technologies is zero.

What about cost? Land-based wind, hydro, and geothermal are currently competitive with conventional energy. Solar costs are higher but rapidly decreasing. When health and environmental costs, paid through health care premiums, insurance costs, and taxes, are accounted for, all major WWS technologies are less expensive than current technologies.

An energy revolution is not only affordable but will also create jobs and revitalize the economy.

If America is known for anything it is for our dreamers. If America is great for any reason it is for our science. Today, science is capable of delivering a world of renewable energy. Today with social media and the reach of pop culture, we can educate people and achieve what was unthinkable five years ago. It is up to us to grab hold of our potential and change our world for the better.

There would be less objection to wind turbines if they looked like windmills............they do it already at a brewery in the Netherlands. If they could disguise an anoemometer in a finial, use the fantail of english windmills and use bilau sails (aka an airfoil) for the blades/sweeps and used computerized controls for it all it might work and dont forget the advertising opportunities and led lighting at night.

Tesseract is what was in a 'Wrinkle In Time' by Madeline L'Engle, enabled the characters to dart around the universe in an instant aka it's Star Trek's 'wormhole'.....but it was from the early 1960's.

Mark x 2, What is misunderstood about the Tesseract is thoughj it is here, too many of us suffer from a foreign cloaking procedure know as the broken sulfur cycle, happened in a movie that never made it past the censors. We have discovered a source for this necessary mineral and when stupidity is addressed sustainable will become the new environmentalism, sustain the Planet, sustain the biology, save the Planet.
As you allude to the movie we allude to 100,000 people in 36 countries we have been unable to kill.
When we no longer cost any government money for being sick, we get creative about how to capture the energy we need with nothing burned, only reused, recycled, sustainable.
Sustainable is a dance similar the Cha Cha, the dance of life.

Excellent article......Alternative energy systems are being deployed and are working. China is way ahead of the curve. Use the sun ( photovoltaics) in high exposure states Ca. Ariz. Ala. Fla etc: and wind in the mid west and coastal areas. These are efficient systems. Japan has been storing water from rooftop cisterns for decades. I have no use for the naysayers. Contribute to the cause for a cleaner more energy efficient planet or choke on your on negative, narrow-minded spin.

If the true cost of of coal and or petroleum and gas were part of the calculus of costs, which means including the cost to society in terms of heath cost and degradation of the environment and if you take away the government subsidies these get in the way of tax breaks then wind power becomes competitive. It's all a question of tipping the balance in favor of alternatives with emphasis on where long term growth is. It's a misnomer to say coal, petroleum or gas is "produced" it's extracted, there is a finite amount.

Silly.

In the last 5 years $1 trillion has been spent on "energy farming," wind and solar schemes, yet they account for less than 1% of our electricity production. They are also unreliable and are not dispatchable without storage. In fact, when a utility ramps down baseload electricity in order to purchase wind and solar electricity, the baseload is more inefficient and produces more CO2.

Wind and solar have not reduced CO2. Despite this huge investment with incredibly generous subsidies, new demand has increased by 3:1. There is no measurable progress.

You claim that wind and solar are competitive (or nearly) and that isn't true. Because of the problems mentioned above and the capital cost of wind and solar, the resulting electricity cost is 2-3 times that of existing production. Everything we consume uses energy. Doubling or tripling the cost will make everything more expensive. That would destroy what's left of our economy.

I agree we must end coal, but you end it with an affordable, competitive solution. Solar and wind are not. Plus, where exactly do you want to create more hydro-power? Because of coming water shortages even the Hoover Dam may stop producing power in 10-12 years.

America has several important challenges including clean affordable energy (and more of it), water conservation and reliable agriculture. Jobs come from demand and only demand. We ought to focus on soling our problems with real solutions instead of pretending energy farming can do it.

Wind in the U.S. in February 2012 ammounted to 3.6% of all U.S. electric power, not 1%. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_power_in_the_United_States.

In 2011, 68% of Europe's new 2011 electricity was wind plus solar (http://www.treehugger.com/renewable-energy/68-percent-europe-new-electricity-wind-solar-power-2011.html).

Fossil fuels and biofuels receive both direct subsidies and subsidies by not paying health damage (2.5-3 million deaths/year) and environmental damage. The public pays these subsidies (>5 cents/kWh) through higher health costs, insurance, taxes and lost school revenue and job productivity.

The levelized cost of a new onshore wind wind farm located in 7-8.5 m/s winds is similar to that of a new coal plant and less when the coal externality costs that we all pay are accounted for. The electricity cost is not 2-3 times higher for wind in such wind speeds versus new coal. Old coal can run at 2-3 cents/kWh because such plants are grandfathered in under the Clean Air Act Amendments so don't pay for their even higher externality costs, that the rest of the public needs to cover.

"New Electricity" is just the growth created by subsidies. Research on Net Generation is forthcoming from the EIA. Wind may approach 3%, we'll see. Solar is .1% or a little more. My reference has to do with the last 5 years. Wind and solar are still insignificant and won't be in the next 10-20 years. They do not keep up with new demand.

I think wind and solar are great, but not a solution. They're a small supplement. They don't reduce CO2 or end coal-generated electricity production.

In California it will never be accepted, the solar panels will kill the turtles in the Mojave, wind turbines will chop up birds in the passes, and the new power grid to support this dream will be too unsightly in the Anza-Borrego Desert. Germany is trying to implement this after shutting down their nuclear plants, it is tough going for them. A beautiful fantasy though...

The story is about control more than energy. We need to stand up and reject the systems that control us through gated energy systems. We live in an inexhaustible energy field, as Tesla was able to demonstrate. You can call this a tesseract if you wish, and perhaps that's apropos.

I believe Tesla was attempting to use the 7.86 Hz earth EM fundamental as a power carrier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schumann_resonances) so that his "Tesla coil" attached to a motor anywhere in the spherical shell could draw its energy. Problem for J. P. Morgan and Thomas Edison was how to bill the customer for the wireless power.

So, yes, "Tesseract is here!" It has been for a few billion years. I'm a scientist. If I were working with a film maker, I would create a film on the fields of wireless power technologies and the harvesting of solar power in space to beam to surface rectifying antennae.

We people are in control as long as we are communicating with our representatives. Solve the energy problem, and that solves economic problems, which solves health and educational problems, that lowers incentives to crime and war.

This is exactly what we should be striving for. Why let China and other big countries beat us at the next big economic boom? Is it because Oil and other dirty energy companies want to keep their enormous influence and wealth at the expense of our Country?
Since we need to employ Americans and we need to keep the jobs here as well as stop fossil fuels from heating our planet, this should be a no brainer....unless you have no brains and no guts to stand up to the Koch's, Exxon's and BP's of the world.

The most successful countries in reducing CO2 emissions are not the countries pushing renewables, but the ones relying on nuclear or hydro. France, Sweden, and Switzerland all emit about 6 tons of CO2 per person per year while Denmark and Germany are almost twice that at 10 tons per person per year. By the way, it is not true that wind and solar are good complements. In fact, during both very cold and very hot weather, when electricity demand is greatest, the wind is usually not blowing or very weak.

And renewable is irrelevant. Silicon is not renewable, but it is the 4th most common element in the earth's crust.

What is important is how much is available, not whether it can be reproduced through natural processes.

I wonder how much of the surface of the continental US would have to be entirely covered with solar cells before the greenie geeks decide that maybe they have been a little too eager to go "Green?"

An area the size of Spain would be what is required to power the entire world. That's roughly 2% of the United States, were we really planning to power the entire world, and doesn't take into account future improvements in technology. As we consume 20% of the world's supply of electricity, divide that 2% by 5. So 0.4% of the United States.
