Mark Shields is a progressive communications consultant based in Washington DC, serving clients on issues including civil rights, women's issues and the environment. For six years at the Human Rights Campaign, the largest national gay and transgender civil rights organization, he helped lead organizational communications efforts in media relations, polling and research, branding and building programs. Shields began his career in media relations for the American Red Cross Badger-Hawkeye Blood Services Region, headquartered in Madison, Wis. During his two years at the Red Cross, he led regional communications response to issues including labor disputes, blood shortages and the Sept. 11 attacks. Prior to that, Shields spent a year volunteering in AmeriCorps, the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), a 10-month full-time government service program for 18-24 year olds. Shields once traveled the country with George Takei, and does a spot-on Mr. Sulu impression.
