Cheney Kept File Marked 'Detainees'

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Dick Cheney wants a few reports released.

The former Vice President, a man so secretive that while serving as Vice President he had his home removed from Google Earth, who repeatedly blocked the release of any documents from the National Archive while he was in office under the dubious claim that he existed in some netherworld outside of all branches of government, has asked the National Archive to release two secret CIA reports; the request from the former Vice President has been reported by a Washington insider blog called Who Runs Gov.

In one of his frequent appearances on Fox News, Cheney said he would be asking for the release because these reports prove that the 'harsh interrogation methods' approved under his administration resulted in the gathering of useful intelligence information. As Cheney put it, "There are reports that show specifically what we gained as a result of this activity."

The reports requests are from a file labeled 'Detainees' that Vice President Dick Cheney kept in his office.

Since no other information is currently forthcoming, this new information leads to a variety of questions regarding the contents of the file. How thick is it? How detailed is it? Does the file include an account of every one of the 183 waterboarding sessions conducted in one month on Khalid Sheikh Mohammed?

This request for two reports raises one more question: If torture worked so successfully, why not release the entire file instead of just two reports? There must be lots more to see in Dick Cheney's file labeled 'Detainees.'

I'm beginning to think that Dick Cheney is a paranoid person. Seriously, he was known to hide out during times of crisis; he was afraid to go to Vietnam (5 deferments); he thinks all Muslims are out to get him.

I'm so glad that the Bush administration is outta here. Can you imagine what would have happened if Cheney had control of this country? We'd be in World War 3 right now...

Lawrence Wilkerson just called cheney CHICKEN eight ways to sunday, tonight on Rachel Maddow's Show. I hope they post it soon on this site. I just wrote John Amato at C&L about it . It was TV Gold. He tore him from his draft deferments to hiding in undisclosed locations...He did it repeatedly with a sharp stick. It was awesome and, of course, TRUE

Great stuff! Here's the Lawrence Wilkerson interview on Maddow. This is one of the best descriptions I've ever heard of Cheney....and from a man of impeccable character:

I really wouldn't do justice by paraphrasing or summarizing this, thus from the last page of Karen DeYoung's book "Soldier - The Life Of Colin Powell"
The September 11 attacks and the White House's willingness to exploit public fear as a political strategy had effectively eliminated any chance that he (Colin Powell) would wield primary influence over foreign policy. The balance had tipped decisively toward the neoconservative vision of the world and the use of military force to achieve it. Outnumbered, outmaneuvered and unwilling to change his tactics, Powell was left to push and pull at the margins.
Asked whether a different National Security Council, under more deft and decisive leadership, would have made a difference, Powell shrugged. "I don't know," he said curtly. "Probably not." Why not? "Cheney."

Did you ever notice the inconsistencies in the first few chapters of that book?

It's on my bookshelf... i got halfway through it.

Actually I just learned today that there was a book to go along with the speech I cited above. I've read other books on MK Ultra, mind control, the HAARP project, etc.

What does it really matter unless there are consequences? Basically that the worst that will happen if this type of behavior is repeated is there may be some upset Americans and allies but you'll never be in real jeopardy of losing your freedom.

"you'll never be in jeopardy of losing your freedom" you seem pretty sure about this but I do wonder what, exactly, freedom means to you. Is it being able to watch the TV shows you like? Or is it something like being able to associate with who you want to be with? or does it mean we are able to get a credit card? Or does it mean that our government is based on the Constitution?

just a couple other minor points, is a consequence something that effects you? . I don't know how long you've been watching but I've seen this type of behavior repeated over and over and over by the same few perps ( by name Rumsfield and Cheney) and they have upset Americans and been rewarded with pardons for their deeds. Some of those Americans are not "upset" anymore because they are too dead.

but no concern of yours - I would guess that that pretty hard to - what's the word?? - respect?

I suppose to respect the chain of command more than the consequences of inappropriate decisions which cause consequences for those who serve under them would be more than you would have time to understand. Those who were given orders to do things they could later be blamed for, I don't have much respect for those who feel they are entitled to create situations where they can hide behind what they have created because their decisions involve the behavior of those who have believed they were doing what they were instructed to do only to have those same instructors turn on them in a blame game to cover their own inadequacies. The few soldiers who were or are in jail ought to never have been given the impression or lack of supervision to create the situations people are upset about now. The commander in chief is responsible and his cadre of officials. They let us all down I would say and it ought to be pretty obvious that this is what happened to anyone who respects integrity, honor and basic goodwill toward one another.

It would be a mistake to limit the review to only evidence Mr. Cheney cherry-picks.

This story gets more painful, sadder at every twist. It's as though none of these people had a moral center when they governed.

That's why Obama is wrong. " ... none of these people had a moral center when they governed."

They, including Dick Cheney, must be investigated and exposed to the world!

Also, Carl Rove's role in this affair needs some attention.

What I want to know is: where does Cheney get off calling the National Archive to ask them to release anything, let alone "two secret CIA reports" ???

How come the media is ignoring the fact that if Cheney wants to haul out examples of successful enhanced interrogation using methods that we now agree were the very definition of torture, then HE KNEW OF SPECIFIC INSTANCES OF TORTURE? Hasn't he just offered evidence for what I hope will be a forthcoming indictment? Seems to me that saying "the stuff we did worked" is very damaging when we know now that "the stuff" was torture.

Cheney is most likely in possession of the files. Remember the box that he carried personally out of his office? He wouldn't let anyone else handle them.

Cheney's attempt to cherry pick which files we are allowed to review is further proof of his deep contempt for the people of a nation he never really served.

If all those files he is hording aren't released either voluntarily, or by court order, I'd like to know why this contentious man is being afforded a privilege of despicable proportion, while the rest of us are not.

IF they are classified, did not hos break the law if he took a copy home? Remember during Clinton's time the director of something got charged with taking out classified information. I think the minimum needs to be a warrant to search his house.

Sure, release the files that Cheney wants released. But at the same time, release ALL of the files about the Bush/Cheney torture regime, including the files of the numerous experts within the government who objected to the torture, but whose objections were ignored and suppressed.

Also, release the videotapes of the torture sessions. Oh, I forgot - the Bush/Cheney cabal destroyed those videotapes, didn't they? Sounds like obstruction of justice to me.

Maybe someday soon, we can all keep our own personal file labeled "Cheney Detained!" That will be a great day for America and the world.

Amen, that is just like McCain said he knew where Bin Laden is and said that he would get him if elected. Why wait?

BTW, if torture by way of water boarding worked for intel, the tell me why it would take 183 times instead of maybe just for sake of arguement 10? The only thing that accomplished was false information just to make it stop.

The "secret file" will contain exactly what Cheney told the CIA to put in there. Come on, guys. This is classic CYA. He didn't expect anyone actually IN CHARGE to see it, see?

There's no reason to think that Dick Cheney would refuse to authorize torture that went beyond waterboarding.
