Antiques Roadshow Picks Their Favorite Oscar-Inspired Movie Finds (PHOTOS)

Jeffrey Dunn

With the 85th Academy Awards around the corner, I took a look through Antiques Roadshow's archives to pick some of my favorite appraisals featuring items connected to Oscar-winning movies and stars. Whether we're in Los Angeles or Louisville, the cities we visit never fail to deliver something special from Hollywood.

As collectibles appraiser Laura Woolley has noted, movie memorabilia is often made of very simple materials. Take, for example, Jack Nicholson's beanie from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." If you were to buy a hat like this at a store, it might set you back $20. But because Jack wore this particular hat when he played his Oscar-winning role as Randle Patrick "Mac" McMurphy, it was valued with other memorabilia from the movie at $4,000 to $5,000.

What these pieces do best is give us a behind-the-scenes look, often with first-person stories: in many segments our guests received their items as gifts from the stars themselves! And who knows - maybe in another several decades we'll be taking a look at memorabilia from "Les Misérables" or "Argo." We'll just have to wait and see.
