Tactless Abroad

This week, Mitt Romney has offered another stunning and stupefying contrast between himself and the president.

Back in January 2009, the newly-elected President Obama told Muslims that America could be a friend, "If you are willing to unclench your fist."

On Monday, Mitt Romney gave them the middle finger.

That is the contrast between these two men, as evidenced in the Middle East this week.

One might have thought that a global conflict that has been as intractable as that involving the Arabs and Israelis would have inspired some careful reflection by the Romney team.

But that would be to impute far too much understanding to Mr. Romney.

In a speech delivered to Jewish and American supporters, he began by referring to Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel. To make such a simplistic assertion is to ignore the simple fact that Palestinians continue to make a claim upon the eastern sector of that city. Regardless of the respective claims of either side, it is the height of tactlessness and ineptitude to make such a statement in such a disputed place.

And the effects of Mr. Romney's blasé approach could be heard as far away as China.

The Chinese government, through its official Xinhua News Agency, referred to the presumptive nominee's words as "radical" and then offered further condemnation.

"Romney's remarks totally neglect historical facts and are actually irresponsible if he just meant to appeal to voters at home," said the Chinese.

Ignorant and irresponsible, said the Chinese.

But Mr. Romney was just getting started.

He then proceeded to insult the Palestinians by drawing a contrast between their economic output and that of the Israelis. It was a cheap shot, but it worked.

"As you come here and you see the G.D.P. per capita, for instance, in Israel, which is about $21,000." said Mr. Romney, "and compare that with the G.D.P. per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality."

Unfortunately, not only are Mr. Romney's facts woefully inaccurate (the C.I.A., back in 2008, said the ratio was more like $29,800 to $2,900), he displays no understanding whatsoever of the challenges faced by a people that lives under their political opponents' rule.

Saeb Erekat, a senior advisor to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, added an even more disturbing analysis to that offered by the Chinese.

In responding directly to Mr Romney's comments, Mr Erekat said:

"It is a racist statement and this man doesn't realize that the Palestinian economy cannot reach its potential because there is an Israeli occupation. It seems to me this man lacks information, knowledge, vision and understanding of this region and its people."

Ignorant, irresponsible and racist. That's the view of the Chinese and Palestinians and he hasn't even been formally nominated yet.

Many of us thought that Mr Romney couldn't possibly get any worse than his first stop in London, where he insulted the British government's management of the Olympic Games.

But the final kick in the teeth was about to be delivered by a man who is a gold medal holder in the sport of cultural condescension.

"Culture makes all the difference," said Mr Romney. And then, just in case we'd missed his point, he drove it home with aplomb.

"And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things."

In one fell swoop, Mr. Romney had denigrated one of the world's most densely followed religions and the historical and cultural contributions of the great Arab lands.

And here's the rub: this is the kind of puerile politics that can actually have very serious consequences.

Given that Mr Romney has delighted in telling us some of the books that have inspired his views, he might consider reading Professor Louise Richardson's book entitled, What Terrorists Want.

In one of the most rigorous intellectual assessments of terrorism, Professor Richardson explains how terrorists are often mature, well-educated men driven by a desire for revenge and renown. And they listen carefully to the words of foreign leaders.

If Mr. Romney reads it, he may belatedly realize that his trip abroad has been ill-considered. And he might take a leaf out of the president's book and extend the hand of friendship and not an obscene hand gesture.

Somehow I doubt whether romney is aware of the fact that the words algebra and algorith are Arabic words. And somehow I doubt he is aware of the fact that it is thanks to Islam that the thinking of the ancient Greeks was preserved. all of our science is thaks to our having to prove things which was what the ancient Greeks figured out.

"If Mr. Romney reads it, he may belatedly realize that his trip abroad has been ill-considered. And he might take a leaf out of the president's book and extend the hand of friendship and not an obscene hand gesture"

But he won't. His arrogance knows no bounds. He will get us into another war. One we won't be able to win. When he finally does get a reality check (after repeated bashings by the clue stick), it will be too late and he will still be dumbfounded that he's not the supreme ruler of the universe.

Historically, it's nothing new for the U.S. once a colony, then once gaining independence, became a colonizing nation itself. Romney's denigrating comments .about the Arab world, specifically the West Bank, reflect our nefarious history, where we've exploited the resources of other nations, while holding their peoples, cultures, and religions in contempt, remaining indifferent to the essential needs of their people, while rewarding despotic dictators. Even the outcomes of our attempts at nation building and Democratization of some of these countries inevitably fail, because our underlying motives are continued unobstructed access to their natural resources, not necessarily the political and economic freedom of their people. Romney who represents corporate America, as exploiting colonizers, is just continuing along the same historically exploitative lines, by unilaterally supporting Israel, as our only wedge in continuing to have unobstructed access to the resources of the middle east. In truth, white males consider most people of color, their cultural, and religious backgrounds (that are not Judeo-Christian) even women and children, regardless of their racial/ethnic/religious heritage, to be somehow inferior. That's why women in our country still struggle for equality and freedom, and why one in four of our children continue to go to bed hungry every night. Romney, simply reflects the ongoing racist voice of the Republican Party, and their !% handlers. As president, he'll for sure, see to it that we will be the first in history, to morph from a Democracy into a full fledged Plutocracy

You can't judge an oppressed people's culture. If you are saying that Arabs are culturally insuperior to Jewish, or Western culture, then, it seems misguided. Where would western thought be without the Arabs rescueing us from the dark ages? The wealth of science, mathematics, and literature and thought from antiquity was given back to the western world by the Arab culture.

People who have been paying attention know what the Republicans want to do to their underclass. Being Repub makes sense to certain protected groups, and their abortion issue has trumped "right to life for the elderly, handicapped, widow, orphan and underemployed". With those givens for whom they are a good choice, they also represent a "take away" attitude for most.

Recently many people have lost much. Among the people who have lost much there is an attitude to "take away" from others to pull them down to their level. They can't reach the CEO's or politically connected, so the anger in the present population is directed to "take away" from the vulnerable. I don't like it, but it is what I see. It may well be carried into the voter's booth. So for the Repub President Apparent it is good politics for him to look down on everyone else, and exhibit no empathy for the unwealthy.

Sorry Martin, but the comment about culture was right on target. Culture is much more than simply religion, and the Palestinians have demonstrated over and over that they are incapable of civilized self-rule.

It may or may not be on target, the point is that a "good" politician doesn't voice it so he can leave his options open.

Here is another case of .........it depends on what the definition of "he" is.

......"he" began by referring to Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel. To make such a simplistic assertion is to ignore the simple fact that Palestinians continue to make a claim upon the eastern sector of that city........

If "he" it is Romney he is insulting all Arab states.

If "he" is Obama he is the great uniter.

Really?

And people don't forget, Romney also implied that Mexico is culturally inferior to the US.

I simply don't understand the argument about Jerusalem NOT being the capital of Israel. The nation of Israel claims Jerusalem as its capital, but many other nations refuse to accept that and instead consider Tel Aviv the capital. Shouldn't a nation be able to determine its own capital city?

Jerusalem is disputed territory according to international law. but in reality it is entirely administered by Israel. The disputed status is what prevents most countries from undivided Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

How do you determine if someone is a foreign invader? Jews and Arabs have traded ownership of the land that comprises Israel for thousands of years. By your logic, Native American tribes should be able to choose our place of governance.

To be fair, Romney is no more disdainful of Islam than Obama is. Obama has escalated Bush's war against Islam, slaughtering countless innocent Muslims, violating the sovereignty of Arab nations, and undermining their progress. He sided with the dictator Mubarak up until the moment he was deposed, and continues to side with the dictators Yemen, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.

Oh, what a tangle web of lies you are weaving painting Obama with the same brush as Bush and Romney. I read a lot, hear a lot but have not come across Obama violating the sovereignty of Arab nations, undermining their progress. He continued the war against Al Qaeda is all. Sounds like your claims against Obama are coming straight from Fox News casting.

Good grief, another big gaffe from the "presumed" republican nominee for President. I hope and pray that the convention comes up with a much better nominee. I believe that this nation will not survive a Romney presidency. that being said, I believe that Obama will win re-election by a pretty big margin.
10:34 AM on 08/01/2012
I say and i say again... the weakest part of the Romney campaign is the candidate. The longer he's quiet the higher his poll numbers go. When he speaks... his numbers go down. Thats why they dont let reporters talk to him
