It's Not the Tax Returns -- It's the Arrogance

Posted: 07/18/2012 8:24 pm

"What is Mitt Romney hiding?" isn't the most damaging thing that can be said about his refusal to release his tax returns. Here's what is: Romney thinks the rules don't apply to him.

Americans don't resent wealth. They resent a rigged system. Ordinary people have to play by the rules, but the lesson of the financial meltdown is that plutocrats don't.

One of the rules of running for president is that you have to release your tax returns. It's not a law, but that doesn't mean it's not a rule. There's no law that a presidential candidate has to debate, either, but that's the way we do it in America.

Romney reeks of entitlement. He thinks it's up to him to decide whether his financial life should be transparent. It doesn't even occur to him that he owes this to voters -- that it's an obligation, not an option.

He may or may not be hiding something. But it almost doesn't matter whether he ultimately discloses his tax returns, because he's already disclosed his arrogance.

UPDATE: It's the You People, Stupid.

If Romney is refusing to release tax returns, as stated, and dictating to the American people what he will do now, while asking for the job of President, what will he do later, if he were to win?

Unresponsive persons do not make good Presidents regardless of how smart they may be.
Presidents are supposed to represent the people, not be adverse to them. Not even yet designated by Convention, yet arrogance large enough to cause conflict in the American people, many of whom appear to resent his candidacy. This is not getting better, but worse, as time goes on.

Romney doesn't HAVE to do a thing. He is in the race by doing nothing, Obama will beat himself. I don;t care whether Romney paid taxes or not. I would not feed the Government beast any more than i legally had to. Business people know more than most when they see waste.

He is RICH..and economically smart and prudent. That's change I can believe in. We didn't get either with Bush or Obama. Much ado about nothing. Obama is beating himself

Not bothered at all by Romney's wealth, tax returns, etc.-bothered by the economy, jobs numbers, my IRA , healthcare costs skyrocketing ( I live in MASSACHUSETTS and premiums have gone up 40%, co-pays have gone up from $15 to $35). Everything points to the need for a change to someone who understands how the economy and business works-Obama is in over his head and we are suffering for it.

After listening to Ann Romney a few times but particularly this last time, I am beginning to wonder if Mitt would be more forthcoming without her influence. All this time, I thought Mitt was a prime example of a spoiled rich kid. I'm beginning to think his wife has more to do with his pomposity than his own nature.

romney actually has people who are defending his not releasing his tax returns. to this i say: if president obama did not release his tax returns and had offshore accounts, would you defend him? would you say it was patriotic? people have offshore accounts to avoid paying taxes. since when did tax evasion become patriotic?

the answer is no, these people would NOT be defending president obama. they would throw everything at him, including the kitchen sink for NOT releasing his tax returns. he would NOT be considered patriotic, but unpatriotic! romney and others in the 1% feel the rules do not apply to them. and why should they? the 1% make the rules to benefit THEM and to penalize US! that is why the OWS has sprung up. that is why arab spring spread across the globe. the 99% are tired of the 1% acting as if they do not matter. we do matter. and we have had ENOUGH of the 1% stacking the cards against us! i predict that president obama will get a 2nd term. romney's refusal to release his tax returns is his death kneel. watch what happens at the repub convention in tampa. romney may not even get the nomination. he does not deserve it. the president needs to keep the pressure on him. romney does not want his tax returns released because it will be revealed he paid ZERO federal taxes! that is the whole point of having offshore accounts.

Obama did not have to release his. Obama ONLY released what was favorable. He did not release his College writings when asked. Obama is not a president by any stretch of the imagination. He is not a leader of people. He could even lead his own when he was handed both houses on a platter.

VIVA la 1%....Achievers. not whiners.

I can't believe this! ARROGANCE? You want arrogance, look no further then Obama! For 4 YEARS most Media and Americans have been SILENT about Obama and his NOT RELEASING any records requested of him. Now Romney has decided to stop complying with request and EVERYONE is all over him!!! How about we make EVERYONE show their records OR shut the hell up about it. The arrogance is expecting ONE Candidate to open up his life so every inch of it can be scoured for the tiniest chance of scandal YET the OTHER CANDIDATE has NOT been VETTED, we know next to nothing about and NO ONE is asking for HIS RECORDS! You can't have it both ways people. If you cowards won't ask the hard questions of Obama, like where are his college transcripts, birth records, travel records, school attendance, etc??? Then you don't have the RIGHT to ask ANYONE else for anything. The ARROGANCE is from THE PEOPLE MAKING THE DEMANDS!!!

Perhaps you should stop typing in caps and read a bit more. Obama was, indeed, vetted, and with a ton of hostility from day one. If you're still talking about his birth records, you have been drinking the birthers' Kool Aid. And to draw and equivalence between tax records and school transcripts shows your true motives.

Very well said. I'm surprised at the insane level of hypocrisy and willful blindness Romney's supporters are showing on this issue. F/F.

I agree that arrogance is involved. Flipper thinks he is above everyone else with the money he made from sending Americans to the unemployment line and he needs a lesson taught to him from the exact people he does not care about, this being the middle class. But the taxes are an issue to me. I want to see what Flipper has done to hide his dirty money, and this should be available to all voters to see. Does Flipper really have so much disdane for this country that he parks all his dirty money in the Cayman Islands or Bermuda? Obviously he values Asians being employed over Americans or he would not approve of closing plants in Indiana and moving the jobs to India. If he chooses to release tax returns, then people should look at his games and see what he did. If not, then you assume they are dirty and possibly illegal. Both arrogance and his tax returns are issues to me.

I have been polled. Three times, in fact - although one was clearly a push poll so I don't know if it's fair to count that one.

Sorry for a second post on this:

Many years ago I knew a couple who were truly wealthy - they could have purchased most of Manhattan with pocket change but unless one was part of their "inner circle of friends" one would never know the extent of their wealth. Another of my friends came into some money (not in the former's league") and I made a comment about the newly acquired wealth and the fact that he had purchased his wife a mink coat. Betty said, "You know, what really bothers us old money families is the arrogance of these new money people. They just don't know how to be regular people who happen to have money. They think having money makes one better than everyone else."

Willard exemplifies the cancer that has infected the whole neo-republican party - arrogance and hubris. They have the idea that they are better than everyone else by virtue of a "chosen people" grant from God and they are blatantly proud of that belief.

Regarding Willard's obfuscation about his tax returns - Could it be that he is afraid the public will find out he is more wealthy than he wants us to believe and knows that even the TP will have a problem voting for a billionaire.

While I share your digust of Willard I think I have to part with you on the coment about TP'ers having a hard time voting from him. They will plug there know, close their eyes and make the vote because of their h8tred for our President. They will never admit it but my estimation is 70% of them derrive their hatred from simple and plain ray - cism. It is so plainly obvious. The fact that they would be willing to vote against their own financial interests and aid the posiblility of a president (notice no capitol "P") Willard only bolsters my point of an irrational h8tred for President Obama. We must beat them at the polls!

Absolutely. The primary driving forces behind the aptly abbreviated TP is racism. What Mr. Obama's election has done is show us how many racists there are in the US. And not just show us, his election emboldened them and made them proud to show that racism It's a badge of honour for them.
