Vietnam. Watergate. What's Next -- Disco?

There's no longer any doubt about the master narrative of the Bush Administration. Their purpose is to re-litigate the 1970s. Nixon's downfall, let alone all that followed, clearly has stuck in Cheney's craw. All his New American Centurions were so scarred by the fall of Saigon and the Church Committee reforms that even Morning in the Gipper's America didn't do enough to restore the imperial executive and the American imperium. So now we watch as FISA and FOIA are dismantled, checks and balances are declared Congressional overreaching, and the bully pulpit is being used like Stalin's commissars used scissors and a paste-pot to purge and doctor the historical record.

So what's next? No doubt some reactionaries are drooling to undo Nixon's putting the coffin-nail in the gold standard. Perhaps others want to retake the Panama Canal which, after all, we stole fair and square. The Supreme Court's already doing a decent job rolling back civil rights and civil liberties from the 60s; surely overturning Buckley v Valleo's campaign contribution limits is next in line.

I'm putting my money on an attempt by GOP culure warriors to expunge disco from the national memory. Don't you have a feeling that this crowd is still in a world o' hurt from humiliations they suffered beneath a twirling mirrored ball yea many generations ago?

The White House may be re-enacting Watergate, but they're surely hoping for an Iran-Contra outcome.

As someone who has attended more than one corporate event populated primarily by young to middle aged "conservatives," let me say they'll never give up their disco music. "I Will Survive," "It's Raining Men," "Play That Funky Music," "Brick House," etc. will live forever in the ballrooms and banquet halls of resort hotels all across this fair land. But it still sucks.

My ex used to worship on her knees when "It's Raining Men" came on. I think she had porn star aspirations with stop a clock looks.

I'M JUST WONDERING HOE MUCH LONGER...

We're going to have to put up with this kind of crapola. For example, the latest neocon tactic seems to be to actually PRAISE Bush instead of just defending him -- a tall order, anyway, since 99.9 % of everything he's done as Presiodent is basically indefensible. You can see the wheels turning. "OK, so let's just start PRAISING Bush for stuff, even Iraq. Let's even puff the owner of the collapsed mine just so Stickler, the federal mine oversight official won't look bad and won't make Bush look bad in turn. Etc., etc., etc.

With Giuli making Bush look like a leftist and HillBill defending Bush's policies... Probably a while longer.

You're right,
it never dawned on me until I read your post.
These are the guys who went to high school dances with mirrors taped to their shoes.
Thanks, I'll sleep better now that I know
what I'm dealing with.

LOL, great post. And hey, didn't Fox bring about that 70's show thing?? Hmmm, you might be onto something with all this 70's stuff. ;)

Fox is Rupert Murdocks and in the Australian press he is called the "SUN KING", because his taste comes from a place "where the sun don't shine"

They probably think that show is in real time. There is a reason why they are disconnected with the public. They are 30 years back.

The Right isn't just going to re-litigate the 1970s but plans on rolling the clock back to 1920. The hit list includes abortion and contraception, unionization, war protests, academic tenure, public criticism of the president, wage and hour laws, sexual equality, and universal suffrage. Allow them and there goes the proverbial neighborhood.

You are spot on. The scope truly is THAT broad and far reaching. These are vicious aggrieved people in some very deep way. It really is a pathological cult. It REALLY is.

It is an "anti-Roosevelt" cult. And you can trace them though history.

And then they will bring back the Charleston, a stock market crash, and the great depression. We have all fallen into a time warp, a worm hole, and are going down the drain fast. Aaahhhhh!!!!

The genius of Karl Rove!

1920? According to Grover Norquist they want to go back to the late 1800s, before the start of the Progressive Era in the early 1900s.

Back to those fun-filled days when 8-year-olds worked in coal mines and textile mills and the economy went through a major depression (not recession) every 20 years or so.

Mr. Lion...>Right On Target.

This revisionist idiocy of the GOP and those who support them is mindboggling. ON some of the other boards I go to, most notably, the History Channel boards, the Freepers, revisionists and outright fascists have been defending Nixon, Tailgunner Joe (he of the HUAC) the Iraq war, and blaming liberals FOR EVERYTHING, including our "defest" in Vietnam. They all claim that if it weren't for the press and given maybe another 4 to 7 years we would have "won" in Vietnam, but because of the commie loving democrats and hate America first press we "lost".

They come up with the same idiocy you see in GW denialists. They will pull anything out of their asses to prove their point.

Shrub's current belief that we "lost" Vietnam because of being cowardly and tired of war (As if ten years and almost 60 thousand dead, and half a million wounded weren't enough) is beyond all normal reason.

He's lost what little remains of his mind and considering he was a coward who refused to fight but has no problem with bankrupting America and sending thousands of young men and women off to die for war profiteers and oil, he is just plain criminally stupid.

What the right learned from Vietnam was they needed to gain control of the "free press".

They only want to roll it back to 1984. What happens to us when O'Brien and the thought police read our opinions on sites like this?
