I would never have thought there'd be any greater crimes than those of George W. Bush, nor any villain greater. I'm wrong. And no, it's not Dick Cheney, either, or anything he's perpetrated. Nor any of their colleagues.

It's Nancy Pelosi, and her colleagues, and what they seem quite literally hell-bent on doing.

Why at this late date do we still revile onetime British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in public as loudly, if not moreso, than we even condemn Adolf Hitler? Why, by now, has Neville Chamberlain has been positioned as the ultimate "My Pet Goat" of the 20th Century? Certainly he did not instigate the Final Solution. Surely he did not whip up the murderous furor of The Third Reich. But his name is still spoken with great villification and scorn, nonetheless.

Why?

Because he enabled. He let it all happen, with his now-tragically gullible decision to cave to Hitler when he could have taken a stand. He could have stopped one of the biggest living nightmares in human history, or at least slowed it down. Instead, he thoughtfully and cautiously stepped out of the way and invited it to rage ahead, much to all of our sorrow. He had the power to impede it, he was in position to be able to hobble it - even if only a little. He could have made a difference, perhaps sparing millions of lives, and decades of grief. He chose not to. Oh, he knew better.

By his negligence, cowardice, short-sightedness, and lousy strategizing, Chamberlain helped Hitler along the way to Damnation, surely earning himself a place in the Fuhrer's boat across the River Styx. Never mind the so-called Saddam or al Qaeda "appeasers" now -- whose names are belched out of Republican/arch-conservative hate-radio boombox mouths as "appeasers", as though the speakers had just been issued their orders for vigorous exercise of the new vocabulary word of the day. THAT move by Chamberlain was appeasement. That was the geniune article. That was then.

This is now.

Nancy Pelosi is the Neville Chamberlain of this day, in this country. She and her colleagues in the 110th Congress will likely be remembered by history in dramatically more disturbing ways than they had ever wanted or imagined. Some constitutional scholars have historians beat -- they've already arrived at that conclusion. George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley has already warned that history will look very harshly on those Democrats who did nothing to hold the worst criminals ever to blight the Executive Branch accountable for anything they've perpetrated. Failing to follow through on the 35 Articles of Impeachment as presented by Representative Dennis Kucinich and cosponsored by colleague Robert Wexler has put a permanent mark on Pelosi's political soul, and on her record. And she's not just failing to follow through on even one of these impeachment resolutions, she's actively discouraging and suppressing them all. Even worse!

George W. Bush should be impeached. Absolutely and without question. It should already have been a done deal -- long ago. NO individual ever occupying the office of President of the United States has deserved it more. What he has done to defy, ignore, and utterly trash the Separation of Powers, the Rule of Law, the parameters of the Constitution, bringing ruin to our good name as Americans and reestablishing us as a rogue nation not to be trusted but rather reviled across the globe is the stuff of near legend by now. That it's been permitted to fester like an oozing bubonic boil, unchecked and unchallenged, is a crime in and of itself. The Presidential Oath of Office declares the following "...to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States." There's a reason why the verb "preserve" is listed first. Because the President is supposed to ensure that the Constitution is kept, not tinkered with, followed, not flouted, and absolutely not viewed as a mere nuisance to be gotten around.

Madame Speaker, you were not hired, or promoted, to be a collaborator. But, evidently, that is something you seem grimly determined to become.

Democrats are supposed to be different. In the quagmire of lies, deceit, cheating, bullying, spin, and calculated manipulation that are hallmarks by now of the Republican Party, the Democratic Party was supposed to offer an alternative, to be the antithesis of the opposing mob. Ours was supposed to be the better, more noble, more lawful, certainly more truthful way. The way that didn't involve trampling on the Constitution with muddy track shoes and then using whatever's left for toilet paper. There is more flagrant and widespread obstruction of justice here than there are dirty tricks in Karl Rove's little black book.

But no. We have to pull our punches one more time, and let the worst and most glaring perpetrators of un-Constitutional criminality get away with it all. Our valiant Dems seem to feel compelled to allow Bush and company dance off into the sunset without so much as a slap on the wrist.

...But, but, but... we're at war. Yes. A war that's a lie. Well established and documented by now from Senate committee reports to inside eye-witness testimony (Scott McClellan only the most recent).

... But, but, but ... we don't have the votes. Maybe. Does this REALLY matter? Isn't it more important to Take A Stand? Isn't it important to stand up before all of America and all of history and put yourself on record against this epic display of abuse of power and the public's trust by saying "NO!"? You really think, after enough of a stink is made in Congress about each of the THIRTY-FIVE Articles of Impeachment and all that they mean, enough to force extended media coverage and some long overdue enlightenment of the constituents, that you actually would not have the votes of a majority of their representatives?

... But, but, but ... we might lose the election. How? By showing backbone for a change? By taking a stand? By speaking the ultimate truth to the ultimate powermongers? By doing what public opinion polls show the voters support in increasingly large majorities? See the paragraph above.

... But, but, but ... it might take too long. For a vote in the House of Reps? You can do that in a day. See that same paragraph two up. It doesn't even matter if it only goes so far as passing the House but becoming stalled in the Senate. It would pass the House and go onto the books forever. If any of this got a full hearing, out in the open, in the sunshine and fresh air that so famously disinfects, you don't think it could be decided in a heartbeat? And aren't crimes this heinous and this nauseatingly extensive worth taking the time to examine?

It's no wonder, by now, that too many Americans scoff at the Democrats as the "do-nothing party" no different than the opposition. And it's a damned shame that the first woman ever to break this high a glass ceiling, to rise to the level that Pelosi has achieved -- as Speaker of the House -- may be remembered most prominently in history for this, instead.

By kicking the Kucinich resolutions on impeachment to the corner again, the Democrats will earn their place in history as the party that stood by, ever so cautiously and with all their carefully-considered rationales, and let mad men run amok. In effect, the Dems will go down in history as party to those crimes. We will share the blame because we did nothing to stop it. It's THE perfect opportunity for Democrats to step away from the muck and show the whole world how we do NOT stand with it, we do NOT think it's okay, we do NOT condone it, we are NOT in ANY WAY its partners, and we will NOT sit back and just let it run its course -- for whatever reason or excuse, especially as we seek to show voters how far apart we stand from the horrors that Republican rule has wrought. It's still a crime, and it's a sin. At least 35 sins, for starters. And we Democrats should absolutely not have a single fingerprint left on it. Unfortunately, Pelosi and pals seem hell-bent on making sure we do. And we are therefore self-rendered just as culpable, just as historically damned.

We as Democrats don't need that for our party, and we as Americans absolutely do not need it for our country.

Is there no way to remove Pelosi and Reid before their next election...? What will it take...? I believe with all my heart they should be put under oath and made to explain their dereliction of duty, after a full investigation, and stripped of all further participation in any government role....that its the Republicans fault just doesn't work any more.....the Democratic have colluded and enabled...and should also be removed, even the right leaning Supreme Court has little regard for the abuse of power, allowed by this Congress...

I couldn't agree more. From a blog posted by Martin Porter:

The Henrik Hudson School District Library Media Centre provides a model essay for students which ends with these words:

Perpetrators, collaborators, bystanders, victims: we can be clear about three of these categories. The bystander, however, is the fulcrum. If there are enough notable exceptions, then protest reaches a critical mass. We don"t usually think of history as being shaped by silence, but, as English philosopher Edmund Burke said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph [of evil] is for good men to do nothing." (this is a commonly known quote and does not need to be cited).

Burke's quote needs only a gender-specific update to reflect that women like Pelosi are equally capable of facilitating evil.

Our invasion of Iraq was popular at the first. The President's lies were not the major thing, but Americans felt we were under fire by enemies and should come together and support the President. I wonder how many people, super critical of the war now, were grimly happy to see it begin.

I am in favor of an impeachment proceedings. I would like to see this whole mess with all its disgrace uncovered and exposed to the sunlight. Never the less, I can understand some people in responsible positions are interested in working toward the interests of our country and do not feel obligated to promote bitter discord and take on fights that are not going to be won. Say, they're wrong: That their victory comes in the election as voters may recognize a clear moral choice exists. Will Bush, Cheney or Rumsfeld dare to visit Europe and risk arrest there.

Just a point about "appeasement." Chamberlain used the word to describe his policy toward Germany. Many regretted the severity of the Paris Accords toward Germany and felt its aggressiveness had some justification. However, and though Chamberlain returned to London saying he had secured "Peace in Our Time," Britain began to prepare for war. Particularly, it funded an expanded air force which defeated the German bomber attacks in the "Battle of Britain."

President Bush didn't say anything about this, but why do you ever take him at his word anyway?

Great Article! Every word true, glad to see it all laid out so concisely.
So now we'll have a "Woman who Sold the World" to sing about.
If these two, Pelosi and Reid, don't get off their asses and DO THEIR JOBS, I personally will be very involved in making sure they never get elected to anything again, even though they aren't my reps. I will support their opponents in the next elections just to get rid of them.

WAKE UP! TIME TO MAKE THE DAMN DONUTS!! TIME TO THROW THE RASCALS OUT!!

Impeach? Hell, that's a given! I'm waiting to see them remanded over for trial AFTER impeachment!!!

GET ON WITH IT YOU SLACKERS!!!

What if Mr. President does not know the Constitution? How can he be accused of violating it, not preserving it, etc.? Or should he be accused of not knowing the Constitution? You see, the man would have taken any oath on any subject without knowing it too well, just to get his boots in the White House. Then what?

Ignorance of the law is not a defense for violating it. Try telling the IRS that you didn't know you had to pay taxes (which is a whole another rant that I will supress for now)

What a fabulous article!!! Every word is absolutely true! It is more infuriating to see the Democratic leadership bury their heads in the sand (with their fingers in their ears at the same time) and absolutely refuse to respond to these highest of high crimes that have been perpetrated repeatedly, shamelessly, and in increasingly broad daylight against the American people by Bush and his minions for the last 8 years than the actual high crimes themselves are. And believe me, I'm already FURIOUS about the high crimes in the first place.

God bless you for writing this article. I can't see how impeachment proceedings would lose us the election. This man and his bunch of thugs has nearly destroyed this nation. Impeach him, have the senate trial, and then try them all for war crimes to boot. Our founders set up this country as something special, and if we want to keep it that way, then we need to have some backbone!

My email to Senator Dick Durbin (the other senator of my state)
***

Senator Durbin, I am sure you are aware that recently, Senator Dennis Kucinich brought up 35 articles of impeachment against the Bush administration. I applaud his bravery in making such a stand and deplore the efforts of Senator Nancy Pelosi to try and quietly hush up this initiative. I urge you to support Senator Kucinich in his attempt to hold the Bush administration accountable for the lies they have repeatedly delivered unto our nation. The democratic party has for too long now been laughed at by Bush and his cronies as a toothless, do nothing party. I urge you to encourage your fellow Democrats in office to put a decisive end to that image and hold Bush and his criminal administartion accountable.

History holds the enablers in worse light then those they enable. Do not become another Neville Chamberlain.

I hope you don't mind,... I plagerized parts of this note to send to my own (Republican, alas) Congressman, and to my two (luckily) Democratic Senators.

Only one thing though,... Kucinich and Pelosi aren't Senators,.... they are Congressmen/women. Not to get too nit-picky,...

As number three in line to the presidency, I have a sneaking suspicion Pelosi was in on more than we know, especially on the administration's use of "enhanced interrogation" and domestic eavesdropping programs. She may be worse than Neville. She may be an active collaborator and be implicated in any impeachment trials. Her skin is in. It's the only thing that makes sense to not carry this forward.

The popular myth is that since the Public had a negative reaction to the Bill Clinton impeachment, it will have a negative reaction to a George Bush impeachment.

Do they really think we"re too stupid to see the difference?

The GOP elephant stampede to impeach Bill Clinton was beyond any limit of common sense or decency. It was absolutely without merit and that is why the Public disapproved.

The exact opposite situation exists today. There is an overwhelming, crushing argument to get these criminals out of our government and restore our nation. There are multiple crimes against our nation, each of which is an impeachable offence. Those who refuse to hold them accountable have the blood of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis on their hands.

Let there be no doubt. Nancy Pelosi"s hands are covered in blood for perpetuating this national disgrace.

You know, I bought into that, too. And for awhile -- I even thought it had merit. No more. And I agree with Senator Obama. The 'practice' of letting previous adminstration's transgressions be 'bygones' after leaving office cannot be done in this instance. The violations are simply too much too ignore.

Yep, Nancy Pelosi and the other Democratic leaders who follow in line have no spine. Bush's abuses in office are well documented and extremely egregious. George W. Bush's crimes deserves nothing less than impeachment !!

Actually, they deserve far MORE than impeachment. Not much for the death penalty, but the crime of high treason--for which Bush's actions qualify him many times over--is punishable by firing squad (read as: death), and in wartime, even lower forms of treason and betrayal of soldiers or mission can demand the firing squad.

So what is to be done? Should I rush to send off another letter to my Senators? One has voted lock step and I have enough of his stationary and the other is just excited to be at the show. Our democracy has muted the average citizen.

Next step?

If we're going to trace back the enabling, then it goes past Pelosi and goes back to...

...Gerald Ford. At the time when the government was taking its job seriously and was cleaning itself up, he decided to short-circuit the process, pardon Nixon, and ensure that future leaders wouldn't have to fear oversight.

And because Ford pardoned Nixon, O'Neill never found the gumption to impeach Reagan for defying the direct orders of Congress concerning Iran/Contra.

Because we had leaders on both sides shirk away from their duties protecting the Constitution, the entire concept of protecting it has become meaningless. Instead, we have impeachment because a man lied about having an affair.

I've been posting all day on the same theme. Pelosi is party to Bush's crimes. She is also guilty of the most heinous of crimes: failure to uphold her oath of office. Impeachment is NOT AN OPTION. It is not something that one person can unilaterally erase from the constitution. But that is what she has done. It is a crime. She should be prosecuted. She should be frog-marched out of the capitol and into a jail cell immediately. They are letting a drunk shoot up the town and kill innocents to prove that drinking is bad for you. They are letting Bush kill innocents so that they can WIN ELECTIONS AND KEEP THEIR CUSHY JOBS. The Democratic leaders in the congress are a disgrace to the party, to the country, and to the planet. My new bumper sticker: FORGET BUSH, IMPEACH PELOSI.
