Four Reasons You Should Watch CW's Nikita

Posted: 01/05/12 11:21 AM ET

Nikita returns Friday with new episodes, and odds are you have heard of this show but never watched an episode. You are not alone. The low ratings (low even for The CW) indicate that few are watching the sophomore spy drama. Why? Well, your television schedule is most likely full, you think a CW show is not for you, or you refuse to watch another remake of Luc Besson's 1990 film, Le Femme Nikita. Yes, Nikita is based off of the film and television series which premiered in 1997, but it marches to the beat of its own drum. It has paved its own path and deserves a chance to be on your television watch list. Here are four reasons why you should watch Nikita:

Impressive fight sequences. Television does not have the luxury film does to spend days choreographing elaborate fight sequences, however the crew on Nikita manages to produce cinematic shootouts and close combat scenes each week in a fraction of the time. No action show presents hand-to-hand combat scenes like Nikita because no show has an actor like Maggie Q. She is the real deal. Maggie Q has trained with Jackie Chan's team of martial arts experts in Hong Kong, and starred in several action films prior to entering television. She is the perfect choice to play the rogue spy agent and some of her maneuvers are so impressive that you have to allot a second viewing. Maggie Q is America's Michelle Yeoh.

Strong female characters. The girls call the shots this season. Amanda, Division's resident interrogator, moved up the ranks to serve as director of Division while Percy continues to be locked in his glass cell, and new character Madeline Pierce is a powerful senator and member of the organization that oversees Division. The show's female characters are commanding, intelligent and mission driven. They are leaders and the men around them recognize that power and support it. Nikita's team is comprised entirely of men who help her each episode to get one step closer to taking down Division.

The heroine has a new look. The CW gave Nikita a fresh makeover when it cast Maggie Q, an Asian American, as the iconic character traditionally portrayed as Caucasian, first by Anne Parillaud, then by Peta Wilson. The series breaks the mold, allowing a minority to play the female protagonist.

A search for home. Underneath the layers of deceptions and spy operations lies the basic search for a home and family that many can relate to. Nikita formed a small family with Alex, her protégé, in season one but the bond disintegrated when Alex learned the truth about her family's demise. Now, Nikita is desperately holding onto the family she has formed with her team of rogue Division agents, which includes her love interest, Michael. She wants more than anything to establish roots but she cannot move forward until she completes her mission and finds the family she was born into. Finding home is a theme present in other characters as well, such as Michael, who is torn between living with his son or with Nikita, Percy, who wants to regain his home from Amanda, and Alex, who returns to her family's estate in Russia. The series is founded on this human quest for the place where one belongs.

Have I convinced you? Will you watch Nikita's return on Friday, January 6? No one enjoys seeing his or her television show get cancelled so help the fans improve the ratings. Do not be the viewer who lets a series perish without ever having watched an episode. Have you ever had that experience where you discover a short-lived show on DVD and wish you saw it on television? Perhaps Firefly, Joan of Arcadia, Arrested Development, Pushing Daisies and Veronica Mars come to mind. Do not let that happen with Nikita. Give it a chance before it is too late.

Nikita is one of my favorite shows- consistently well written, good character development, doesn't drag plot arcs out too much. I adore Maggie Q's Nikita- flawed, beautiful and such a great character. I admit- Birkhoff's my favorite. But I'm biased since I've seen most of Aaron Stanford's work, and really like him as an actor. I really hope this show is renewed, it deserves to continue!

The show also has a new, highly skilled fight coordinator for it's second season. He is very creative and is helping the whole cast to shine in their fight sequences. As is evident by by the quote from Laura Prudom in her article here at Huffington's dated jabnuary 7th. "Michael and Owen went in search of the Guardians. The competitive tension between them certainly seemed to be a good motivator for their mission. Their two-on-one fight with the Guardian in the alley was one of the show's most memorably choreographed fight sequences to date."

Completely agree. That fight scene was, without a doubt, one of the best on the show. Definitely the first fight I thought was just as good as the fights with Maggie Q.

Maggie Q so awesome in Nikita. She's the most perfectest human being ever!

Nikita is a good series, the 1st season was not the greatest, second season better, playing catch up. it goes foward & then back for the the history, You have to pay attention to every episdoe .
I do not compare it to the La Femme Nikita series, and I loved that series & still watch it, & listen to the music all the time.
with this show I have seen many of the actors on this that also were guest stars from LFN. also I seem to see many of the names in the credits that were involved with LFN making & or in volved one way or another.
I like seeing the ariel veiws of the city's in Canada & I also in joy seeing so many of the places , churches, & beautiful homes & business again in this newest Nikita.
I must admit I liked all of the Nikita Movies & the series as well. made & Produced by others.
I'm just looking at the big picture, & glad to see it on TV
I hope Nikita continues !!!

This show is amazing and I really pray that it gets renewed for a third season. I think it has a lot of potential to gain viewers after Chuck is canceled. The show is well written, the cast is great, and the overall direction of the show gets better with each episode. I LOVE NIKITA. PLEASE RENEW IT!!!

If you loved an amazing steak, would you settle for a McDonald's burger? That's what I thought. THAT is why most fans of LFN can't stand to watch Nikita. More power to you if you somehow like the new series, in spite of its serious casting flaws and oversimplified plots which are dumbed down so teenagers can understand. I just can't stand it. If they remade Matrix, would you watch Hollywood destroy that incredible premise? Or Terminator, the original? Didn't think so.

This is your subjective opinion about the old vs. the new Nikita. I understand you're a fan of LFN but why should I believe your assessment over other people? I don't understand why you have to set up a divisive comparison between the 2 shows. The new Nikita has been positively reviewed by old, new fans and critics as well. There's no point in tearing down the show. Accept them as different translations of the original Besson movie. Don't you want to win new fans of the older series from a newer base who enjoy the new Nikita?

Just started season 1 and love it. It's one of the most consistently entertaining shows on TV. I hope more people watch so it gets enough seasons to conclude the story properly.

And if you can't watch live, be sure to watch on Hulu the day after it airs! Since I don't have a Nielsen box, watching Hulu or CWtv.com is the only way the CW can "see" my views of episodes.

You mentioned Firefly (the new head of Division, Amanda, is played by Melinda Clarke, who was on "Heart of Gold") - a better cancelled Joss Whedon show to compare Nikita to is Dollhouse. Same strong female characters, conspiracies, secret underground facilities, and action scenes, though less futuristic tech (even the tech guy, Birkhoff, reminds me a lot of Topher from Dollhouse).

I've been watching since day one and would hate to see this canceled! Hopefully views will pick up more after Chuck (sadly) ends.

You can also catch up with the entire 1st season on Netflix streaming :)

I'm a "La Femme Nikita" lover forever but I love this new version of Nikita. It's different, the haters should stop comparing both shows. Geez, a year later, you're in the same spot of hate. If people who loved LFN Besson's movie were like you, you would never had LFN USA's series.
Stories are there to be told and re-told.

CW's Nikita plots are wonderful, complex; you have to pay attention. The characters grow over the episodes, change, learn. The political, conspiratorial aspects are really carefully treated. It's not a show you watch to ship Michael and Nikita, and not more (you can do it, many people do it... but you'll miss a lot if you do so).
Totally agree with Maria Romero (and yes, Maria, you should watch USA La Femme Nikita too). Alberta Watson is wonderful in this version (the Senator Madeline you name... you should really name the actress who plays her, too). But you all should see her as Madeline in La Femme Nikita! -one of the more complex characters in the story of TV series, in great part, merit of Watson's work itself.
But about the haters... they will always hate. Let them alone with their bitterness.
Wish this series was in Fox or other network not so teen-oriented -the ratings would have been amazing.

My Dear Mandaly3,

Don't mistake "Haters" with people who have refined taste and appriciate originality, intelligent, thoughtful and creative writing, producing, directing and especially acting.I don't like people who use the word "Hate" so indiscriminately and loosely..I certainly don't. The fans of the phenomenal original series are simply and RESPECTFULLY, telling it like it is...not making personal attacks and name calling as you seem to enjoy doing.

Oh and one more thing...if you would take a moment to educate yourself on the subject..M.Besson,was consulted many times in the early stages of development by the producers of the original La Femme Nikita tv series and it was with his blessing that the show's progress continued. He was also very impressed at how his ideas were expanded and developed for American viewers during the course of the original series.

I like your assessment Mary Romero. I think Nikita is a first rate action thriller with positive, empowered female leads and supporting characters. I was impressed with the respect the writers give to the female leads. It is the CW network and it could just have been just a salacious exploitive mess but the care w/ which they write Nikita, Alex, Amanda is really well done. I was also afraid of how they were going to address Nikita, especially as an Asian American female in television, I thought they would be stereotypical in the portrayal. Thank goodness, she turns out to be a serious, competent, yet fallible character that I absolutely sympathize with. I also like the mentor/protoge-mother/daughter relationship she has with Alex. Its compelling and emotional w/o being overwrought. The actresses killed it in the Season 1 finale.

Almost every person I have asked to give the series a chance has been pleasantly surprised by how suspenseful and tight the story writing was and that the finale of Season 1 absolutely delivered. Potential viewers should give it a chance...just watch it because its a great action show and excellent entertainment. Disregard the naysayers, or comparisons to old versions. Check it out for yourself. Its an exciting, well-done show.

Roy and Peta set the standard for how those characters were to be portrayed and unfortunately for Maggie and Shane, they haven't come close to meeting it.

As I said, the only bright spots are Amanda, Alex, and Owen. I can't get into Michael and Nikita and their drama because the writers rushed their relationship too fast. I don't care about them separately much less together. If one of them died today in the series, I'd not feel a single thing. I didn't finish all of season one, but I do know that the Alberta Watson, who played Madeline on LFN and the actor who played Kessler in the LFN episode Gambit reunited in the finale for Season 1. Sorry, nothing would entice me to continue to watch - short of the miracle of either Peta or Roy guest-starring. And even then, only for that/those episodes they chose to star in. Guest stars won't get you ratings (for long). The series is a disappointment, and shame on CW/WB for having made such an inferior series compared to LFN. It's time to pack it up. Stop trying to improve on an amazing show when you broke the mould with LFN.

I was skeptical and pissed about the CW's 'reboot' of such an amazing series. I watched the premiere...and found myself intrigued by the plot. But I did not care for the casting. At all. Not a single character was cast properly, imo. Except for Amanda. That chick could kill you with those eyes. And Alex. I liked her character, who incidentally, is the closest in characterization to the real vulnerable Nikita. I watched the next 15 episodes, and had to force myself to do that much. Because no matter the incredible stunts and fights, for which I DO give Maggie Q props for, her Nikita just doesn't inspire my empathy. Or much of anything else. Quite frankly, I can't get vested in her. We didn't start the series at the beginning, we started in the middle, which leaves a lot of ground to cover. And no matter how they do that with the flashbacks, that's not enough. It's not enough to make me care for her, or for West's Michael, which by the way, is completely laughable compared to Dupuis' Michael. These writers of Nikita took characters from LFN and butchered them completely. Roy Dupuis once said the reason he chose to play Michael that way, minimalist to the point you didn't know what he was thinking, was that to kill and assassinate people the way Michael did, with each life taken it eats a new part of your soul. And Roy believed/viewed Michael as damaged.

I was a massive fan of the 1997 series La Femme Nikita (LFN) and the original movie, Nikita. LFN was magic. The casting, especially for the characters of Michael and Nikita, was incredible magic. The series was one for adults, dark, edgy, taking on story lines that, for the times, were new, different, and daring. The music and scoring was incredible, matched every scene and was a character all its own. The clothes, at the time, were amazing; Laurie Drew and Peta went to the fashion houses in the off seasons to get an idea of what was the height of fashion and bring it to the series. A pop of color like Nikita's colorful sunglasses could grab your attention and hold your interest otherwise. Section One was a character all its own, with the dark decor, stark lighting, and minimalist approach... The chemistry between Michael (Roy Dupuis) and Nikita (Peta Wilson) has been completely unmatched in anything I've ever seen. Before or since. And this coming from a girl who loves X-Files, Farscape, Stargate, Eureka, Castle, Bones, and a host of other shows with great chemistry between their leads...

We get it... you hate this show.
