Matt Littman became fascinated with speechwriting when, at 16, he worked as an intern at the 1984 Democratic National Convention. It was there that Mario Cuomo gave his stirring "Tale of Two Cities" speech, and it was there that Matt stood right in front of the podium, and afterward, shook Governor Cuomo's sweaty hand.

Matt's love of the spoken word brought him to his first speechwriting job, for former Congressman Larry Smith. He then went on to a career in writing, first selling scripts to television shows such as Spin City, and then as a speechwriter for clients that include Members of Congress and various elected officials, major corporations, celebrities, philanthropists, and ambassadors.

As an expert in his field, Matt has appeared frequently on Fox News, where he provides expert commentary on public speaking and politics.

Matt attributes his career to his father, who told him to "pursue your dreams." That was better advice than the wisdom sent down from his grandmother, who told him, "Get a nine to five job and stick with it. You'll get health insurance. Speechwriting? That's a job? Are you a moron?"

Matt was raised in Long Island, and now lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Valerie, and his dog, Lola, and cat, Habeas.

Terry McAuliffe Has Become Baghdad Bob

Posted May 6, 2008 | 09:19 PM (EST)

After the United States took the airport in Baghdad, Iraqi Minister of Information Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, aka "Baghdad Bob," stood in front of the world's media and exclaimed, "We butchered the force present at the airport. We have retaken the airport! There are no Americans there!"

Was Baghdad Bob...

Obama-Rendell in '08!

56 Comments | Posted April 22, 2008 | 08:39 PM (EST)

Let me explain this to Ed Rendell in a way that he's sure to understand: he is to Hillary Clinton as he is to the Eagles. In both cases, he cheerleads, he exhorts, he pleads, he goes on television and offers his opinion, he probably spends too much time rooting...

On a January flight from Dallas to Des Moines, I looked at the disheveled person across the aisle from me, and thought, this guy looks familiar. Where have I seen him before? His hair's a mess, his clothes don't match, so I can rule out actor or politician.

3 Comments | Posted April 4, 2008 | 05:09 PM (EST)

These next few months will bring an end to the worst presidency of all time. I'm talking about the end of the reign of Isiah Thomas as President of the New York Knicks.

Donnie Walsh, Bronx native, builder of the Indiana Pacers and the competitive teams they fielded for...

When I was in high school, my heroes were Magic Johnson, Bruce Springsteen, anyone who dated Raquel Welch, and the great orator from New York, Mario Cuomo. In my HuffPo bio, I mention shaking Governor Cuomo's hand just after he delivered the Tale of Two Cities speech at the San...

Now, Team Hillary Goes After Speaker Pelosi

290 Comments | Posted March 27, 2008 | 10:51 AM (EST)

They went after Barack Obama, and he proved more popular and more resilient than Team Hillary. They went after Howard Dean, and he didn't cave. They went after Bill Richardson, and he didn't give in. Now, they have come for our Speaker, Nancy Pelosi.

Hillary Clinton's big donors see...

Who's Afraid Of James Carville?

105 Comments | Posted March 25, 2008 | 02:45 PM (EST)

James Carville calls Bill Richardson "Judas" because he believes that Democrats should have more loyalty to the Clintons than they should to their country. He believes that if the Clintons provided you with work, you should repay them by supporting Hillary. Of course, if you support Hillary because her...

Howard Dean Meets With Hillary's Fat Cats: Will He Cave?

Posted March 17, 2008 | 11:56 PM (EST)

In 2004, the Democratic leadership could not wait to see Howard Dean flail. The Dean Scream was the dream of John Kerry and the establishment Democrats, because it meant the insurgent candidate stumbled, fell, and never recovered.

Four years later, Howard Dean is running the Democratic National Committee --...

His Middle Name's Hussein -- Deal With It

Posted March 2, 2008 | 11:36 PM (EST)

I was never a big fan of my middle name -- "Charles." I always thought that it sounded too stuffy. "Charles" -- the only Charles I knew of was the Prince. People would always say, "Oh, Charles, like Prince Charles."

But dealing with references to the Prince of Wales?...

Is the Word "Conservative" Going the Way of the Word "Liberal?"

Posted February 13, 2008 | 03:24 PM (EST)

In 1964, it was considered a virtue to be a liberal. FDR's legacy was strong. Liberals brought us victory in World War II, social security, voting rights for African-Americans, a tough stance against Communism, and Camelot. On the big issues, the liberal agenda was dominant.

But the divisive Vietnam...

Goodbye, Rudy Giuliani

Posted January 22, 2008 | 11:41 PM (EST)

So Fred Thompson's campaign has ended. With any luck, Rudy Giuliani's campaign will end next week.

Watching Rudy Giuliani fall from the top of the polls has been an enjoyable experience. I won't lie. I've enjoyed it because Rudy himself seems like such a miserable, unhappy guy. And I've...

All right, I know it's a little late. But as readers know, I've been a speechwriter on a Presidential campaign, and I did not use the Huffington Post pulpit to pronounce my support for my candidate. My candidate was Joe Biden.

Why Mitt Romney's Speech on Religion Did Not Matter

Posted December 10, 2007 | 03:05 PM (EST)

Mitt Romney gave a speech last week on how religion will inform his role as President, should he be elected. It was a very well-received speech. Plenty of pundits applauded, many referenced JFK's historic speech on religion and the Presidency, and yet almost all missed the point: Mitt Romney's speech...

The Knicks Must Lose (So They Can Win)

When the Boston Celtics shredded the New York Knicks last night, I smiled. This was the most one-sided game I'd seen since the Harlem Wizards (the poor man's Globetrotters) came to Indian Head camp and destroyed a team of patsies.

I smiled at the notion that this horrible Knicks...
