Sarah Palin in 2012? Get Ready For It

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Sarah Palin is campaigning in areas in which right-wing Republicans are already smitten with right-wing Republicans. She is going out and speaking to the basest part of the base, the part that believes Obama's a terrorist and wants him tried for treason. The McCain campaign continues to show no faith in her intelligence. Her speeches rarely vary at all, no matter the city or the venue; if an audience is old, she talks about health care and Social Security. If the audience is young, she talks about health care and Social Security.

Palin knows that not every audience cares about the issues she's discussing; she just is not comfortable with a slight change in the speech she has been handed.

It's a pretty jarring sight. But even though not every right-wing audience reacts to each part of Palin's script with the same enthusiasm, one thing is clear: the far right really likes Palin. And let there be no doubt about this: in 2012, Sarah Palin does not want to debate VP Joe Biden. She wants to debate President Obama. She wants to be the Republican Party nominee for President.

Now, many of you reading this blog just threw up on the computer screen, so please, take a moment to clean up. You are saying to no one, "That's insane! She's not competent!" I am not here to remark on the sanity of Palin's plans. I'm not saying she will be the nominee in 2012. I am saying that she will run. She may be one of those people who gets two percent of the vote in Iowa, and quits the race. Or, she may fare better. Mike Huckabee won Iowa, let's recall. While recently voted the Funniest Celebrity in Washington, D.C., Mr. Huckabee, a charming guy, is not on the same page as I am in regards to policy and whether or not we roamed the earth with the T-Rex. Sarah Palin is already adored by the religious right; Iowa, here she comes!

Don't believe me. But don't believe that the Bush era is really over, just because President Bush will be leaving office in January. The politics of Bush are not at an end. Sarah Palin is proof positive. She's not a genius. I'm not going to say she's a moron like "Mongo" in "Blazing Saddles," but she's certainly not someone whose brilliance we aspire to. She's not well-traveled, not well-read, not well-versed on the issues. Just like President Bush. So we can sit here and say, no way, she has no chance to be the Republican nominee. But she does have a chance. And it makes me want to throw up on my computer.

Matt's analysis is correct. Palin represents what the Republican base wants and the analogy to Reagan (regarded as a "joke" the first time he ran for president in 1968) is correct. One saving grace is, I hope, that the Reagan era is OVER! I sense a new era beginning. Every thrity years or so this happens, and after the failures of these past eight years the thirst for change is more than a desire for a new leader. It may be a generational shift is underway that will take the center back toward the left and that will reduce the significance of the Republican base as a launch pad for a successful candidacy in the general election. Once people are "fed up" and the change process is in motion, they do not fall for the same "tricks" over and over again. Their base we will always have with us, but their ability to command respect and support will be reduced as the nation moves define a future that will be (in part) a reaction to their excesses and failures. To every thing, there is a season.

Dan Rather interviewed on Morning Joe a couple of days ago stated that Palin has positioned herself for a run on the presidency in 2012. He cites the adulation of her base and her ability to whip up enthusiasm..yada yada. He seemed to really like her, but then he is in the business of being a "prognosticator"...gee that sounds like a Bush kind of word.

mccain better watch his back, because palin has taken on members of her own party, specificially when she wants their spot. matter of fact, that is the only time she takes on her own party. "thats not bipartisanship, my friends" poor johnny, he doesnt even see it coming. first she threw her husband under the bus, for troopergate. cindy and johnny are next, mark it.

If so Sarah Palin would be the first former Radical Secessionist to become President. How would the republicans keep up their 'Love Your Country' and never question your government when Palin belonged to a party who' founder said. 'The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government'

I've said this elsewhere, but it bears repeating: she'll run for her good buddy Ted Stevens's Senate seat and will win running away. She'll run for President at the first opportunity as SENATOR Palin.

I absolutely agree.

Democrats have historically ignored or written off people like Palin as members of a "nutty fringe" only to see them reappear a few years later with enormous popularity and suprising wins. Anyone remember Ronald Reagan in 1976? That year, when he lost the Republican nomination to Gerald Ford, he was 65 and EVERYONE thought it was the last we would hear from him.

It was also the year that Jimmy Carter won the presidency and both Democrats, many Republicans and not a few journalists were talking about the "death of the Republican Party and the two party system." Fast forward to 1980.

Even if Obama/Biden win in November, as now seems likely, Democrats have to remain diligent in following through with the various investigations into Palin's abuse of power as well as highlighting her bizarre religious affiliations and connections to groups like the Alaska Independence Party. If not, there's a strong chance that we will simply send Palin into remission, allowing her to metastasize later more virulent than ever.

Yes, and that is why her ethics and tax problems in Alaska need to be persued after the election. For the the US and world's protection, she needs a 40 pound albatross around her neck, the sooner the better.

I was counting on the findings in "Troopergate" to sink this creature, but her husband is going to fall on his sword for her. I'm just hoping that the new political fervor that is being demonstrated by Democrats this year will continue into the future and save us from her type of politics.

As a woman I think I can say this. But Palin's popularity is due to her looks. A woman pushing 49 in 2012 isn't nearly as appealing. She will have to keep her nice body.

I am glad someone is on the same page as I am. I have been saying this ever since she was roled out at the convention, this is the next republican nominee either in 2012 against Obama or 2016 against Clinton. Either way folks, she is here to stay. No way she goes back to local government after a taste on the national stage.

2012 Hmmm, She would be up against President Barack Obama. SHE would be shredded TOAST! And if she waits or tries again in 2016 she would be up against... Hillary Clinton! Need I say it again? Palin would be shredded/eviscerated TOAST!

I think you are right to a point. Clarence Page says Obama has to be up at least 14% to win.

That said, McCain will be a one term President. Sarah will be the candidate in 2012 and run against Hillary.

Result? The first woman president in 2012.

Clarence Page is full of it. Obama was able to beat Clinton and her message was a hell of a lot more substantial than the crap the McCain camp is cranking out daily. Barring a meltdown on the part of the Obama campaign he should win handily.
As for Sarah, she would actually have to *gasp* engage the media if she ran for Pres, where her astounding ignorance would be put on display for everyone to see. Result?Appeal to the religious right and not alot else.

Not to necessarily defend Page, but white Dems as a group are less swayed by race than Repubs (at least out in the heartland). So primary wins do not show the extent that race plays in the GE. There is a percentage of poor/working whites (traditionally dems out here) that are very prejudice against anyone not like them and will vote for the old white guy. That bleedoff from Obama is the main reason why there is a red streak thru the center of America from TX to ND on most projected EC maps!

Clarence Page is a columnist on the Chicago Tribune. That 14% comment is not from his latest article - so out of date, I think

Yes, we'll Sarah going to be around for a while. I can't imagine what she could do (that she hasn't already done) that would put her in permanent disgrace.
