The real choice is between those who believe that government is bad and those that believe in good governance. I encourage all those who believe that government can be a force for good in the world to go to the polls in 2010 and cast their votes for politicians who say "yes".

One thing about the "government is the problem" folks: the logical extension of this philosophy is anarchy and nihilism. It seems to me the rabble-rousers at the town meetings over the summer reflect this reality. The way the Republicans are falling all over themselves trying to co-opt this tea party "movement" is not so much about political opportunism - although there is some of that, for sure. It is, rather, the spectacle of the Republican party struggling to survive as it is drawn into the maw of the monster of its own creation.

"The monster of its own creation" -- back in April, I called it "the teabag terror" and predicted it would eat the GOP alive. It really is like the mad scientist who can't recognize the monster he's created.

I, too, have made the realization that those who believe government is the problem have brought us 30 years of problem government. This is the self-fulfilling prophecy first set in motion by the Reaganites so many years ago. I wonder that any of us can see that "shining city on a hill" through all the crumbling infrastructure.
