Every time a company important to me launches something I try and think through their reasoning and see the bigger picture. Aside from what they announced today - what does that mean for tomorrow? This is a practice I highly recommend.
If I was Facebook I would create a viral product (video calling) that required people to install a plugin (it did) and create the plugin in such a way that it can update in the background without additional consent from the user (yep, they did this too), and then after I have enough installs I would push additional functionality to the plugin unrelated to that original feature such as:
- Desktop notifications
- Stream music and other media from the desktop
- Ability to bring Facebook apps to the desktop in a seamless experience (click a notification on Facebook and the desktop app launches the same way video calling seamlessly launches)
I am excited to see Facebook's new products and I can't wait to build on top of upcoming APIs and features.
What type of features would you like to see Facebook add to the desktop?
