The roadmap for Matteo Pistono's pilgrimage was a Tibetan mystic's own far-ranging travels across the plateau; his life was not bound to isolated mountain retreats. Soon, Pistono was meditating among hermits in remote sanctuaries and cliffside grottoes. The American slept in the caves where the mystic had experienced spiritual visions and revelations. On foot, horseback and dilapidated buses, Pistono crossed the same glacier-covered passes that the mystic used to travel from eastern Tibet to Lhasa. And Pistono sought out the masters and yogis still alive who uphold ancient spiritual lineages.

But Matteo Pistono's pilgrimage took an unexpected turn....
