Romney and Santorum Help Obama in Michigan

Posted: 02/27/2012 3:02 pm

Ten days ago, Michigan was a major battleground state for the general election, Mitt Romney was looking to reconnect with the middle class in his home state, and Rick Santorum was gaining momentum after three big wins and looking at maybe becoming the first Catholic nominated by the Republican party. The Obama campaign was so concerned about Michigan being in play for the fall that it brought President Obama there to give a major speech and made plans to spend valuable ad dollars in the state.

But that was then.

Now, after the Romney and Santorum campaigns, Michigan is likely off the fall map of battleground states. It looks again reliably Democratic -- not because of anything the Obama team has done, but because of the nature of the contest between Romney and Santorum, which has alienated many independent voters and created a tremendous divide. This isn't a good sign as the Republican nomination contest moves into other battleground states like Ohio next week.

The imperative of the Romney campaign for the last few weeks was supposed to be healing the class divide and the disconnect between their wealthy candidate and middle- and working-class voters, especially in the industrial Midwest. In the last few days, Romney has talked about owning multiple Cadillacs to be able to drive to his multiple houses, and the fact that he has a lot of racetrack friendships -- not with Nascar fans but with Nascar team owners. Going into the Michigan primary Tuesday, Romney is perceived more than ever as out of touch, living a life alien to middle-class voters.

And now we have Rick Santorum presenting himself as a culture warrior, to the point of attacking President Kennedy's famous speech about the separation of church and state. Santorum actually said on ABC's This week with George Stephanopoulos that reading Kennedy's speech made him want to "throw up." This is an amazing turnabout.

More than 80 years ago, Al Smith, a progressive governor of New York, lost the presidency in large part because of his Catholic faith and the bigotry that existed among many Protestant fundamentalists. The prejudice was both subtle and very overt, with some folks accusing him of building a tunnel to the Vatican from New York City as he stood in front of the Holland Tunnel. Fifty years ago, John F. Kennedy recognized what happened to Smith and sought to draw a firm line of separation between religion (especially the Catholic Church) and the state. He understood that politically this was a must if he was going to be the first Catholic elected president. Even after addressing the issue so clearly, Kennedy lost votes on Election Day because of prejudice against Catholics by some Protestants.

Ironically, in order to appeal to Protestant fundamentalists and conservatives, Santorum now wants to erase the line that Kennedy drew in 1960 between the church and the state. No Catholic has ever been nominated by the Republican Party, and now we have Santorum -- a major candidate who is Catholic -- criticize the only Catholic elected president in order to win votes among voters Kennedy was concerned his faith might offend.

In the course of campaigns we learn a lot about the candidates and people involved, what values are important to them and how they connect those values with the American public. This week we have learned that politics is not just about connection, it is also about separation. Separation between candidates and middle class voters, separation of church and state, and the separation through the arc of history between where things stand today and where they stood more than 50 years ago.

Far worse than Mr. Saint (a self-proclaimed Poltical Pope) being outed as a non conservative in the 20 ith Debate by both Dr. Paul & Mr. Roman (who wants to be Caesar), is Mr. Dowd's notion that he is the current Catholic American Idol.

On the contrary, Mr. Sanctimonious has a political record that outlines that he has committed every sin against conservatism which he accuses his opponents of committing.

A more correct profile of this Political Pope is that he is the American Idol of Holier-Than-Thou.
Let's also remember the fact that Mr. Saint was rejected by PA, because he betrayed conservatism while a U.S. Senator.

So Obama not turning his back on the auto industry has nothing to do with it?
07:23 AM on 02/28/2012
Michigan goes, as the Auto Industry goes, and the industry goes for President Obama based on presidential decision to assistant the industry and save all those direct & indirect jobs!

Romney & Santorum had zero to with that decision and the successful implementation of White House assistance and guidance back to profitability!

At this time I can see no path which will lead to President Obama's reelection. The youth vote for him will be flat at it's best and there is a very good chance it will go against him. The Jewish vote will go against him. He can kiss the Catholic vote goodbye. The upper middle class is going to turn on him over taxes. He is going to lose the middle class if he gets into a fight over social issues. The same goes for the working class with the added insentive for them of wanting to rebuild the manufacturing base of this country so that they can once again begin the march of upward moblity for themselves and their children. All in all I think it looks very grim for President Obama's reelection.

The Reagan democrats are gone now. Those blue collared voters hated hippies more than their paychecks and voted Republican. A few still exist that's why the shift to crazy religion talk began. But as a voting block they are extinct.unions took up the anti Vietnam cause and thus where grouped in with the counter culture. That is no longer the case.
05:56 AM on 02/28/2012
We will see if the Reagan Democrats are gone. I believe you and Team Obama are going to be in for a big surprise on election day when this very large group of voters gives their support to the Republican. If that Republican is Rick Santorum you can double that support, which is why Team Obama are very very worried that he is going to win the nomination.

No one gets it wrong on the conservative side more consistently than Dowd.............It is Santorum who is in line and in tune with today's new type of Catholic "evangelical" voter...............Kennedy's speech was given to show he wasn't a puppet of the Vatican..............Many protestants of that era were afraid that Catholic Kennedy (now get this) would follow his church's teachings on birth control and seek to restrict its use..................What irony, compared to what we hear from "evangelical" Catholics today regarding attacks on religious freedom................Opportunists like Dowd, a prime example of the welfare conservative wanting it both ways) praises Kennedy for his strong break with his church while today we have Catholic bishops running to the Republican party to get law crafted to their religious liking on the matter of birth control.

Very good point. I think they are really helping him all over the country though. Think about it: he already likely has much of the minority vote, but he likely has much stronger support from woman voters because this contraception issue will not go unnoticed. I think the long and drawn out GOP primary has caused them to lose track of the national election -- with consequences that are more extensive then what they are willing to acknowledge.

The Republican party is about to wander in the desert for at least 40 years - if not forever.

"Michigan looks again reliably Democratic -- not because of anything the Obama team has done...."

Dowd proves here that the only way the Republicans will get any votes at all is by lying. Giving Dowd the benefit of the doubt I'll say by diversion and obfuscation.

They are all lying. Even this Republican pundit guy who has to cause static by his commentary so more people won't realize the clowns that are running on the Republican side to be President.

Really, Matthew Dowd?

Just because you are stuck with having to be the spokesperson for a Republican Presidential Race made of clowns, you really can't bring yourself to state what everyone with any sense or honesty KNOWS.

That because President Obama took actions to do so, he helped saved the auto industry. Period.

You've got absolutely nothing Mr. Dowd.

The state government in Michigan was completely republicanized in 2010. I hope that this allows Michigan to fix that up in 2012, so that Snyder isn't allowed to send us down the crapper unchecked, like he has been doing for the last year.

So if Obama let the auto companies fail by not doing anything he would be doing well in the polls there today?
