With the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers and the takeover of Merril Lynch, the economic carnage that began on the day known as Black Monday may, unfortunately, be just the beginning. Panic is setting in as everyday Americans worry if the money in their bank accounts is safe.
John McCain, however, is staying the course. Claiming, as he has all along, that the "fundamentals of our economy are strong."
When he came under attack for "being out of touch," McCain struck back by saying that when he says "fundamentals of our economy", he's referring to the American worker. He said
"My opponents may disagree, but those fundamentals of America are strong.... Our workers have always been the strength of our economy, and they remain the strength of our economy today."
In order to drive his point home he released this ad. Take a look.
It turns out, McCain was thinking on a much deeper level than any of us.
That's right, America! Just like if you criticize the war in Iraq, you're criticizing the troops, when you say the economy is bad, you're saying the American worker is bad.
So what if Republican economic policies have led our stock market to the brink of disaster? We can't change horses mid-recession!
And we thought McCain didn't understand economics. He must have read Greenspan's book.
