Kites is a London band composed of a pop-poet with a love of words and handkerchiefs (Matthew), a scholar of electronics (Richard), guitarist (Jasper) from New York and former percussionist of The Holloways (Edwin). In a recent interview, Kites’ flamboyant dandy-esque front man, Matthew, described their sound as: “Melodramatic provocation for discontented dreamers” with the press referring to them as “pioneers of electro-fop-pop”.

Kites began writing tightly constructed tracks in 2010 that successfully blended synthetic textures with more organic instrumentation, creating a sound that was bold, affecting and, ultimately, irresistible. Their intensely physical and energetic stage shows have won them fans internationally and garnered comparisons to New Order, Patrick Wolf and Talking Heads in the mainstream music press.

The band have recently played live support slots for the likes of: The Maccabees, Jarvis Cocker, Emmy The Great, King Charles, Man Like Me, Gary Numan, The Mystery Jets, Peter Hook, Erasure and Bloc Party, plus sets at Liverpool Sound City and Tramlines.

Their recent release ‘Brother’ and new track 'This Jumped-Up Boy In Livery', have received rave reviews from BBC 6 Music, Amazing Radio, XFM, Absolute Radio and Q Radio. Enthusiastic support also came from the printed press including Q Magazine, Musicweek, i:D Magazine, Notion Magazine, Artrocker, and across the blogosphere; The 405, This Is Fake DIY, Breaking More Waves and so on. Q Magazine also chose 'Art Tastes Better Blind' as one of their best tracks of 2011 and an essential download in their January 2012 issue.

Kites release 'This Jumped-Up Boy In Livery' on 1st October 2012 and will be bringing their ‘Factory-indebted, decadent disco’ to cities across the UK on an extensive tour, (including festivals and university dates) in September and October. Dates for this tour will be announced soon. In the meantime, you can catch Kites live at Scala (London) on 2nd October, where they will be supporting Aiden Grimshaw.

Valentine's: The Most Insufferable Day of the Year, But Please Don't Tell My Girlfriend

(17) Comments | Posted February 11, 2013 | 7:00 PM

Yes, it's that time of year again: Valentine's Day is upon us. It is an anniversary that I have come to loathe with a passion that burns worse than a thousand suns.

On Thursday evening next week, hordes of canoodling couples will descend upon the nation's restaurants...

Now That the Party is Over, Musical Reasons to Be Cheerful in 2013

(3) Comments | Posted January 8, 2013 | 1:07 PM

Be warned; this article was conceived on the 2 January and, as such, emanates from the mind of a gentleman whose insides then resembled the contents of a can of Pedigree Chum.

It all began when I decided to join a group of my most feckless and reckless chums on...

Ho-Bloody-Ho! There Must Have Been More to 2012 Than Austerity, Censorship and the Mobot?

(0) Comments | Posted December 18, 2012 | 7:00 PM

"What a surprise," I hear you all sarcastically scoff - "Matthew has sought shelter in that most idle of journalistic refuges: the end of year review."

In December, we writers are not required to compose a genuine article. We simply need to organise a meaningless -...

Don't Drink and Jive: Why Alcohol and Performance Do Not Make Cosy Bedfellows

(0) Comments | Posted November 23, 2012 | 7:00 PM

Most of us will be familiar with the magical properties of an espresso martini. It slides down the oesophagus with graceful conviction; your pupils flare and you feel suddenly buoyant. In summary, you are a god. Moments before you might have been lackadaisically prostrate atop a chaise-lounge, but one sip...

You Might Be Able to Play the Viola, the Tuba and the Concertina, but I Can Play the iPad

(5) Comments | Posted November 7, 2012 | 7:00 PM

It causes consternation among 'real' musicians that, owing to recent advances in technology, every Tom, Dick and Harry can fashion themselves as a songwriter.

When I climb onto the tube each morning and begin tinkering with Garageband for the iPad, I can feel pairs of frosty eyes boring into...

Music and the English Language: I Don't Mean to Sound Slutty, but Please use Me Whenever You Want. Sincerely, Grammar

(9) Comments | Posted October 25, 2012 | 8:00 PM

It was only a matter of time until I summoned the courage to discuss my favourite topic of conversation - music and English grammar - or, to be more accurate, the lack thereof.

Many have often repeated Zappa's truism with echolalic precision, "rock journalism is people who...

Take Off Those Sunglasses Bono - You Look Ridiculous

(12) Comments | Posted October 10, 2012 | 8:00 PM

There are only two instances when it is acceptable to wear sunglasses: either because it is actually sunny - a moment of such rarity in Britain that I can remember more lunar eclipses than days of uninterrupted sunshine - or because one is hungover.

The second occurrence is a...

The Music Industry is Dead But I Still Want a Record Deal

(7) Comments | Posted October 2, 2012 | 8:00 PM

I write this article whilst cogitating in a Dalston café, somewhat discombobulated, after another weekend of nocturnal excess. As I lick my wounds and prepare for a very serious session of feeling particularly sorry for myself, it strikes me that everyone around me must be an artist of some description....

I am on Twitter and I Need to be Loved

(4) Comments | Posted September 26, 2012 | 8:00 PM

To date, I have 625 followers precisely. It is a feeble, impotent number and I blush crimson with embarrassment when I dwell on it too much. The figure leers out at me from my iPhone, a constant reminder of my crippling inability to make virtual friends, let alone real ones....

I Am a Frontman and I Have a License to Offend

(1) Comments | Posted September 19, 2012 | 8:00 PM

It seems to me that frontmen principally fall into two categories: the cloyingly modest or the intolerably arrogant. Rarely is a perfect balance struck between these stereotypes and, more frequently, we find artists yo-yoing between the two like unhinged schizophrenics. Chris Martin seems to be particularly disposed to this tendency;...

To Hell With Being Meaningful; Performance is About Presentation

(1) Comments | Posted September 10, 2012 | 8:00 PM

My band, Kites, once had a slogan, which read 'All style; no substance'. At the time, this mantra was designed to be facetious. You see, I have unveiled contempt for performers who are so consumed by their own highfalutin that they forget to create a show for their audience. They...

I Think I Smell a Rat!

(8) Comments | Posted September 2, 2012 | 8:00 PM

I've lost count of the number of artists who loftily claim that they do not read their own reviews. Only last week Daniel Sloss (comedian) was asking why anyone should "care about what one bitter twat who gets paid to have an opinion...thinks?" Daniel is right, of course. Such an...
