Eat Tweet: Recipes In 140-Character Twitterese, Decoded

Posted: 10/05/10 10:52 AM ET

2010-10-05-EatTweetJacketCover.jpg Eat Tweet is the world's first cookbook written entirely in Twitterese. The abbreviated form might be a little intimidating at first, but with the aid of the glossary, it will soon become like a second language for you, as it has for so many online readers of twitter.com/cookbook. Recipes serve 3-4, and may be prepared using average-sized skillets, saucepans and casseroles.

Minimal instructions allow for a variety of successful implementations -- you can choose whether to cube or slice vegetables for a stew, and to bake cookies either pale-golden or deep brown -- rendering "perfection" irrelevant. Remember to implement your own judgment; it's the best kitchen tool you own!

Have fun, and santé!

Maureen

Decoded:

(1) Mix together 1 cup of flour, ⅓ cup lightly-packed brown sugar, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon sweet spice mixture (homemade as below, or store-bought) and ¼ teaspoon salt.

(2) Fold with a beaten mixture of â…“ cup milk, 1 egg, and 2 tablespoons melted butter.

(3) Next, fold in ½ cup grated apple, and ¼ cup chopped, toasted walnuts. (Peel on or off the apples is fine; it's up to taste!)

(4) Fill six muffin cups (In general, Eat Tweet recommends lightly greasing and flouring bakeware.)

(5) Bake for 20 minutes in an oven preheated to 350°F.

this is nothing new check out some old cookbooks and you will see many abbreviations. the one thing I do not like is the fact that cuts and slices do not have abbreviations. I hate that given that i'm not a school culinary I do not know that. Would be very humanitarian if some awesome person would break the code and give It out in some free dictionary online.

I think what is really great is that Maureen has been able to pack several cookbooks' worth of recipes into a small, convienient, purse-worthy size. The recipes are simple without a lot of fluff and chef-speak that dominates most recipes.

It might take a bit of thought to decode these recipes, but its the new adventure in cooking that makes this fun.

Is micro-bio a new disease?

Just what I need to do after a hard day at work before cooking dinner - decode my recipes. The whole idea is as absurd as communicating in 140 character blocs. But then, nobody's ever lost a buck underestimating the intelligence of the American people.

Maybe I'm not up with abbreviations but none of that tweet made any sense. It would take less time to google a recipe than to decipher that.

Ugh - why do we have to pretend that the rape of the English language has any literary merit?

Because it's cool and hip and with it.

I mean journalism and literature is all about this new media and using it to stay relevant.

It is not like fads ever die.  This will be a part of culture forever....
