Free Evenings and Weekends

Call me on the telephone, I've got time on my plan
I know that no one's listening, but I know that they can
A little bit of oversight for transparency's sake
It takes a special criminal
To break a law that there is no reason to break

Evenings and weekends are free
For them to listen in on you and me
And I can't possibly see
How you and I could ever be
If we go back in time
To when a telephone call it cost just a dime
And a crime was a crime
And we demanded a better excuse than "It's different this time."

Carry an agenda in on the backs of the dead
We tried to throw the book at them, they keep moving their heads
In spite of this duplicity I write them a check every month
And in light of their complicity
It's time that we charged them for once

Evenings and weekends are free
For them to listen in on you and me
And I can't possibly see
How you and I could ever be
If we go back in time
To when the opposition had something that looked like a spine
And a crime was a crime
And we demanded a better excuse than "It's different this time."

I'm getting really sick of hearing "It's different this time." I keep thinking this era of is almost over . . . then I listen to McCain, or watch Congress continue to fund this war.

Now I'm beginning to worry that what should be an aberration in our history -- a time when any-means-for-my-ends politics overrules rule of law, and fighting for democracy is only jingoist rhetoric -- will live on as a convenient precedent for future spineless "leaders."

Hopefully this song will be playing when the telecoms get their "secret session" before the legislature to make a plea for immunity to duck all the civil and maybe criminal suits. It would be justice to see some of these suits result in awarded large financial penalties against the telecoms. This would cause the telecoms in the many administrative hearings before the various Public Service Commissions attempt to recoup court awarded payouts from ratepayers by calling Bush and Chaney as witnesses. It would be nice to see both these bozos appear time after time in public hearings. But alas, an administrative court subpoena is not enforceable . However , if any of these cases advance to judicial proceedings both Bozo's would have to appear.

Whew! For a second, there, I thought I was listening to Kiss' "Love Gun."
Anyway, nice fake accent. Did you get that from Carl or Nora? ... or maybe Billy Joe Armstrong.
