World Cup Draw: Teams the US Will Hope to Avoid

What's Your Reaction?

I have a theory about the US team. I think we match up much better against more technical sides than sides that can match our athleticism.

Against technical sides like Italy and even Spain that play at a more measured pace, we match up very well. The first half during the confederations cup when we had 11 men against Italy, we were able to go toe to toe with the Italians. The same can be said about the 2006 World Cup game against Italy. But against athletic teams like Brazil, Ghana in 06, teams that combine both - athleticism and technical skill - are an absolute disaster for us. So with this in mind, assuming we are in pot 4 with the Asians, what teams do we most want to avoid in the World Cup draw on Friday?

1. Holland.
If we could avoid being drawn with one team in this tournament it would be Holland. Since the Dutch are not seeded and are in pot 2, getting drawn with them almost automatically becomes the group of death (unless you get South Africa). But regardless of their pot, I would put them just after Brazil as a team I am most afraid of. The Dutch play fast flowing football that I think would have us on the back foot from the get go. They combine the pace and technical quality that we just can't really compete with.

2. Portugal. The situation is ditto to Holland. Portugal is also in pot 2 and will likely make up a group of death. While Portugal has a few more wholes than Holland, handling Ronaldo, Simao, and others will be a real struggle. Getting paired with the Portuguese will really hurt our chances of advances.

3. Brazil. I think Brazil is the other team, along with Holland that we most want to avoid. the two teams in the tournament that I would most like to avoid. We saw what they could do in the confederations cup. They were more of a handful for us than Spain due to their overall athleticism. Capello called them the best team in the world after the England game, pointing to their athleticism. The one advantage with Brazil is that they would likely beat everybody, leaving the race for second wide open.

4. Ivory Coast/Ghana. The African teams really scare me, especially Ghana and Ivory Coast. While African teams have been seen as tactically deficient in past tournaments, the improvement in African football can't be denied and the quality of talent is remarkable. These are athletic skilled teams that are going to be jazzed playing on their home continent.

5. Spain. Our win over Spain was historic and we are unlikely to repeat that feat. That being said, we demonstrated an ability to neutralize Spain's interchanging passing and shut down Xavi. We clogged the middle and forced their attacks out way and headed away cross after cross. This could be a recipe to eke out a draw. But another advantage about Spain, similar to Brazil is that they should beat up on the rest of the group.

The World Cup draw is today???

Apparently it is!!!

You would never know it if HuffPo's so called "sports" section is an indicator.

The biggest sporting event in the world has its draw today and HP's sport's section is absolutely dominated by NFL stories.

i hope the us does get the/a group of death.

maybe a run of bad results will finally convince gulati and USSF to actually bring in a proper world class gaffer.

I certainly hope the US will get reasonable competition in the group stage, but anything goes with these pots. There are a lot of positives from the Confederations Cup to build on, so it would be a shame to see them in an excessively difficult group. As national teams outside of Europe and South America are getting stronger, I'm hoping FIFA will abandon these politically correct regional pots. Being seeded provides hardly any benefit to South Africa as they can still be drawn with three very strong teams. The current set-up is akin to affirmative action that's gone beyond its necessity. The US and Mexico, and most African and Asian teams are strong enough to compete on merit, and this system only gives a boost to various confederations being represented in the knock-out stages rather than rewarding individual teams for their qualifying feats and world rankings.

Really looking forward to the USMNT stepping up in international competition. They have a great mix of veterans and youngsters. Hopefully, Altidore/Casey/Donovan can score some more goals. The defense will be solid, as will the goal keeping. We will finish second in whatever group we land in. Whoever they draw, it will be a struggle. The boys always seem to wilt on the big stage. The Confederations Cup was a great step forward. Also, to the article, I think that almost any group is a "Group of Death". The African/Asian teams are vastly improved, and the US has historically struggled against the top teams in Europe (see Italy game last World Cup and Slovakia friendly to name a few). Good luck to the boys. I'm sure I will be skipping work/getting up early to watch them play. DON'T TREAD ON ME!

Really?! The US should avoid pretty much every team in the World Cup.They lost to Senagal at the last WC! I didn't even know that was a country.

You also didn't know that Senegal wasn't actually in the last World Cup tournament, and in the previous finals in 2002 and 1998 that they were in, they never played against the USA. On another note, I'm really happy the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Boston Redskins in the World Baseball Series this year.

Oh no. Did I touch a nerve? You don't hear Italy or France writing list of team they hope to avoid. Maybe if the US played against the U-21they might have a chance on winning the 2010WC.

You were correct: "Senagal" is not a country. But Senegal is. They beat France in 2002 and have many good players. Compared to their resources they are phenomenal.

Holland is seeded... either way not a team the US wants to face in its group. France missed the cut and was placed in pot 2 instead, so in theory France would be a team to avoid (unless the USA is in a group with South Africa). Then again, France comes out of qualifying either with something to prove or incredibly vulnerable not to advance.

France could become a threat to anyone, but most probably if they could get rid of their tarot-reading coach. Yet, in 2006 he brought them to the final, albeit with the exceptional Zidane giving some great performances.
