For his work on “Will & Grace,” Max Mutchnick has been honored with an Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series; two People’s Choice Awards (Favorite Comedy); six Golden Globe nominations (Best Comedy Series); seven GLAAD Media Awards (Outstanding TV Comedy Series); a Founders Award from the Viewers for Quality Television, and the National Award for Excellence from the Human Rights Campaign.

Mutchnick started his writing career over twenty years ago with his high school best friend, David Kohan. They began writing professionally for “The Dennis Miller Show” and from there ventured forward into comedy series. Producers Linda Bloodworth and Harry Thomason gave the future Emmy Award winners their first break into the world of sitcoms when they hired them to work on “Hearts Afire” with the late John Ritter.

Their other television credits include “The Wonder Years,” “Evening Shade,” and the critically acclaimed “Dream On.” In addition to “Will & Grace,” they also created and served as executive producers on the comedy series “Boston Common,” “Good Morning, Miami,” and “Four Kings” for NBC and “Twins” starring Melanie Griffith for the CW. David and Max also served as Executive Producers on the CBS comedy, “The Stones,” created by David’s sister, Jenji Kohan.

Born in Chicago and raised in Los Angeles, Mutchnick hails from a creative background. His late father was a graphic designer who launched the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and his mother is an entertainment executive and author of children’s books. Mutchnick’s older brother followed in their father’s footsteps as the General Manager and Creative Director of AOL RED, AOL's online service for Teens.

Mutchnick left Los Angeles after high school to attend Emerson College in Boston. Intending to major in theater arts, he switched his major to mass communications. While at Emerson, he quickly became involved in the school’s television program, ultimately running the campus station. In 2005, Mutchnick was appointed to Emerson’s Board of Trustees. In 2006, The Max Mutchnick Campus Center was erected. Known as “The Max,” the Campus Center has become a hub of student life on campus in Boston’s Back Bay.

Additionally, Mutchnick has been an active member of the Big Brother Program of Los Angeles, having mentored his “little brother” for the last 19 years. He has also been a long time supporter of the Human Rights Campaign and the Lambda Legal Defense Fund.

Mutchnick currently resides in Los Angeles with his husband, Erik Hyman, an attorney at the law firm Loeb & Loeb. They were legally married, according to the California State Supreme Court, in the backyard of their home on October 25, 2008. They are the proud parents of twin daughters (via gestational surrogacy) Rose Austin and Evan Heart Hyman-Mutchnick, born in September of 2008.
